Vid blah... and grrrrrrr

First the grrrrr..... Hubby just upgraded the Mac to the new operating system and suddenly none of my clipping software works. MPEG streamclip won't run the mpg's (my clean copies), the .mov's play only sound in realplayer, I can't friggin' clip in the new Quicktime - sure, it looks very sexy and all and it has this way awesome trimming thing but there doesn't seem to be a way to export it to .dv so I can use it in FCE! In fact it doesn't have "export" as an option at all! What's the use of that!

Looks like we need MPEG-2 play back component for Streamclip which costs $20. Not that that's expensive, but why would an upgrade suddenly make files unreadable in Streamclip?! I know I just have to be patient and wait for my Mac genius hubby to work it all out. And he will (*meep* he better!) It's just I want to play NOW!!!

*breathes*

I was taking a vidding break anyway. *nods* I was. Really. Though I have just put "Battle for the Sun" on my timeline and I have a bit of a plan for this song.... but... hmmmm, we'll see, it ain't going to be easy me thinks...

Sorry to rant.... I feel a bit better now. Damn technology. I mean, I love it really, but.... *sigh* not when it gets complicated on me.

Oh noes, bummer in the extremis...

I really hope you can get this sorted, I'm no help at all as I haven't a clue what you're talking about! Yikes!

See, I think this is where I go wrong, I hear everyone doing this clipping and exporting and clever stuff like that and me? Just clip a scene out of the episode in the time line as I'm going along, which is probably why vidding either takes me so long or craps out the memory or something like that.

**fingers crossed** (I'd cross my toes for you as well, but I fall over too often as it is...)

Hee! I'm not sure I know what I'm talking about really either. Only I know what used to work doesn't any more. *eep* :)

It's the only way I can make it work. I have to convert my raw footage so my editing program accepts it - otherwise it has to be rendered every time I make a change. Also putting a whole episode into my program makes it really, really hard to work with. There's probably an easier way, but I suppose it's how I've always done it.... :)

Hee! Thanks for the finger cross. Hubby informs me there's an update some where, he's just having trouble finding it.... more grrrrrrr...

You sound like me when nothing goes the way it should. But I'm glad to hear that you have someone to work it out.

And patience isn't really one of my virtues either.

Since we (it's my son's PC after all) finally installed a proper anti virus program that then was busy cleaning off all sorts of trojans and cookies we had lying on there already *cough*, the windows media player won't play the SPN DVDs anymore. Luckily I usually watch them with the DVD player on my TV anyway. So I just ignore the problem...

Hope your hubby understands your need to vid SPN and gets things right very soon! (Before your vidding break excuse wears thin...lol.)

xx

Hee! Oh yes, he understands. It's a bit of a love hate relationship actually.... He doesn't really like me vidding (well, just hates the show actually), but equally he is very supportive. I can usually ask him anything and he'll help me. He's basically responsible for all the software I have....:) Luckily he's in the graphics industry so it helps him also.

*smish*

[identity profile] greyowl88.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, to hear that makes me jealous. When things don't work on our PC we usually don't know what we are doing while trying to fix it. So yay for your helpful hubby!

[identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed! There's no WAY, I'd know what I was doing without him, though I have learned a lot along the way. He now asks me about vid formatting. :)

I have this secret dark desire that one day all my vidding software will blow up and I'll just have to throw up my hands and be done with it. (Because you know there's no way my techgeek husband would enable me by fixing it! *g*)

Vidding! I wish I could quit you!

But Ash, you? You need to keep vidding. :D

[identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! I'm surprised MY techgeek hubby enables me - especially when I know how much it pains him!

Vidding! I wish I could quit you!

You and me both! I had a week off and it was very liberating I have to say. Only now? I'm itching again. Damn! That's an addiction isn't it!? *g*

But Ash, you? You need to keep vidding.

*snuggles* And so do you hun.... (damn time consuming hobby!)

*smish*

You are fortunate to have someone to fix the computer. In my house it's Me, Myself, and I.

I'm glad I didn't upgrade to Snow Leopard yet. I've got everything working and I want it o stay that way.

And I just got a great surprise that I can pick up Final Cut Studio  at the campus store for $299! I see a software upgrade in my future...

[identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey!

Yeah - though sometimes I wish I knew how to do it.... I just need some patience...

And $299 is an awesome price for FCP. :) Go for it!

(ooh - I'm playing in Photoshop!! I've made 3 book covers! *dances* Yes - I am ridiculously happy with myself!)

[identity profile] greenpear.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It's more than Final Cut Pro. it's Final Cut Pro 7, Motion 4, Soundtrack Pro 3, Color 1.5, Compressor 3.5,& DVD Studio Pro 4 . It's one advantage of working at a university. Academic discounts...

And you'll find the more you play with Photoshop the more you learn. Just don't be afraid to try new things. It may fail at first but the skills learned are worth it...

Just rub it in why don't you!! :)

And yep! Lot's of playing. Hit and miss. Feels bloody great when it's a hit though... :)

Guess it's just the squee coming out getting it for such a great price!

But remember, you'll always have me to ask questions to.

And I'll be anxious for you to check out the vid I'm working on now. Definitely something different ...

[identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! Squee away! :D

I will definitely be checking it out! I look forward to it. :)

[identity profile] greenpear.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
And I hope your husband can get your computer all straightened out soon...

[identity profile] greenpear.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm getting ready to test the beta of the new vid on YouTube. WOuld you like a sneak preview? There's still a few finishing touches I need to make but I like to check to see if YouTube rejects it due to the soundtrack.

I can't remember what your YouTube name is though...

You can partition your hard drive and have the old OS on one partition for your familiar aps, and the new OS for other stuff. You'll have to back up everything to reformat, then put everything wherever you want it afterwards, which is a pain in the neck, but worth it. Husby needs to learn better Mac manners!

[identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Husby needs to learn better Mac manners!

Yeah - but I'm pretty sure he didn't know this was going to be a problem.

It doesn't make sense to me that an upgrade should change things so radically. Hubby is a bit of a Mac wiz, so I know he will sort it out. He's been trying to find a particular component or some such thing... He did restore QT7 for me so I can still do some stuff on that.

Thanks hun.

[identity profile] mara-snh.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Some upgrades are worse than others. The latest upgrade won't work at all on the pre-Intel Macs. I'm sure it's a hardware/driver issue. The manufacturers of your key software should have patches for their registered users by now. Shame on them for putting you and others in such a bind! Good luck :-)

[identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com 2009-12-26 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know there are often glitches with new upgrades - though Mac upgrades are usually pretty good - compared to PC's that is.

We found the fix, just a matter of spending $20 for the MPEG-Play back component. Still a bit of a pain though.

Thanks again.

I sympathize because we got a new computer for Mike last year and it turned out I had to be left using it because half of the software he uses wouldn't run properly (or at all) on it. He also ended up having to abandon his Zune because a software upgrade had made a lot of what he needed to do unworkable. Sometimes one can reset to pre-upgrade but other times it's not possible.

[identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com 2010-01-04 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Man, that's a bummer... And extremely frustrating I should image. It's wonderful when everything works, but when it doesn't. Grrr. In fact there's no way I'd be able to do half the stuff I do with out have my computer savvy hubby. He's always getting me out of trouble...

Mostly the upgrade seems fine now, it's interesting though how I keep discovering little differences - some of them are really annoying too.
