abandoned vids meme (or the really scary meme....)

rhoboat. This seemed like awesome timing. And even though this is probably the scariest thing to do ever, it's feels kind of liberating. If these vids never see the light of day (which I have no plans for them to), at least a snippet of them does. :) Even though I had finished this vids, I consider them abandoned because I decided to shelve them instead of re-edit them. Mainly due to lack of ideas on how to fix them and then just being bored with them...

1. Chose a vid, or two, or three, or however many you wish, that you started once upon a time but never did finish. Whether it was because the muse or inspiration left you, or someone else did the song, or you never found the time, or just ended up not liking it---no matter the reason! Show them to us! Through download or stream, it doesn't matter.

2. Tell us the reason you abandoned it. Why did it get shelved, or tossed into the rubbish bin? Why didn't you finish it? Did you ever plan to go back to it? Tell us about it!

3. Tag people! Ah. No. I couldn't single anyone out for this. BUT, a few of you told be about some of your abandoned vids on a recent post so it's YOU! It's not an easy thing to do though so yeah, totally understand running a mile from this one... :)

I've think I've made about 45 vids over the last few years and I've ditched is 4 in total. That is, had them finished but didn't post them. If I start a vid and part way through it's not working I actually delete it. Though I can't remember doing that for a long time. The first vid I abandoned was made to Madonna's "Beautiful Stranger" which didn't work and then "Stand By Your Man" - which I thought would be funny but it wasn't!

Then there's these two.

The first one is my attempt at an "episode reaction" style vid. I started this after Swap Meat. Though I also wanted to tie in some other lines in past episodes that left me sad as well. This is also in response to a number of episode reaction posts that talked about missing SamnDean and bitchjerk. (and thank you to everyone who gave me their fav SamnDean moments. I also tried to incorporate them into the vid. But I think that may have caused a problem also because I was more interested in doing that than creating a proper flow for the vid.

The biggest problem it would seem is the song. And yes. The song was a very risky choice and one that just doesn't really work. I was being slightly tongue-in-cheek about the choice. I know how sentimental it is, but that was the point for choosing it. But then the vid became quite serious and therefore became overly sentimental and sappy.

And it was somewhat self indulgent, because really I just wanted to reminisce about the good ole days. But these clips have been used a gazillion times and I'm not really doing anything special (vidding wise), with them. I was going for meta more than making it any sort of vidding masterpiece....

This is only a snippet... the intro. You might die of sugar overload if I played the whole thing.... ;) (Colouring is all over the place and it has watermarks etc. All of which would have been fixed had I continued..)

(And D & C you haven't seen this opening. I did play around with it since the version you guys saw, but it doesn't change it enough I think.....)

Then there's the Jo and Ellen vid I've been mentioning. Um.. Song again might be the problem, but really the feedback I got was that it lacked any sort of ooomph. Any real insight to the characters etc. And I agree. I was trying to make a happy-ish "reflection" of the characters, but neglected to make it relevant.

I called it "Little Bit of Love". For me that was about the way it seemed to take fandom so long to warm to Jo and Ellen. We gave them "a little bit of love" by the end. Well, some gave 'em a heap more than that! :D The editing it still a bit all over the place. I did actually play with this a bit before posting it here- but, man, it still needs a heaps of fixing... *ducks*

I am still thinking I might use this song if I do an end of season tribute to characters who met their demise. We'll see. :)

OK, so this is the part that I run a mile. Posting "bleh" ideas isn't exactly easy. But I think this will help me put these to bed. Or, be re-inspired maybe.

Thanks. I just watched it. Shame about the quality. looks like it was a tremendous amount of work. Are those boxes hand done? I mean there's not a magic tab where you can just "apply boxes" I'm pretty sure.... :D

I'm not giving up. I just need to solve the quality problem.

The boxes were done with a bunch of shapes placed over all the tracks so the individual frames were nice and tidy.

Yeah, it was a lot of work and I refuse to give up on it. It will see the light of day sooner or later...

Wow girl! You are BRAVE! I couldn't even imagine putting up vids I was unhappy with to show everyone. That took serious balls. *is awed*

But yeah, totally great timing. I think you needed to vent your spleen on these. I knew just letting them sit there bugged you, so maybe this is perfect? You got them out, and now you can move on to something bigger and better. *hugs*

And there is nothing saying you can't come back to them later...you never know...some new spark could light a fire under one of these. I'll be here whatever you decide to do.

Yay Steph! You saw. \o/ You know, as soon as I hit post I nearly went back and deleted it. It may just been the most stupid thing I've ever posted. Though it has been weirdly satisfying just doing something with them.

Exposing oneself is not easy. But I have a pretty forgiving flist (I HOPE!!) and anyone doing anything creative must have moments of producing stuff that's not working. But yeah, showing it?.... *hides*

And can you believe the timing of this meme! It was like it was meant to be... especially after posting about ditching vids recently! :) So it felt like it was supposed to be.

I've had several vids that I've started and had my muse totally bail on me. *i.e. sucked so hard they could pull a tennis ball through a garden hose* *o* lol

I'm no stranger to "What the hell was I thinking??" *facepalm*, and I deleted them biatches so fast the door didn't have time to hit them in the ass on the way out.

There's only 2 that I've kept around with the thought of returning to them one day and I'm proud to say that Katie is actually vidding one of them because she fell in love with it and I can't wait to see what she does with it.

The other one I still love the idea of (an Azazel character study), and I think the beginning is pretty solid. I actually had more of this completed and my computer went all wonky on me. When it rebooted everything was gone except the beginning that I had saved. When I tried to lay the timeline out again I couldn't get it the way I had it before, so in frustration I just laid it aside. :(

I really like your Jo/Ellen idea, but I think you might be right about the song choice not really inspiring it. I hope you can find a song that will because I'd love to see what you'd do with the right song.

I don't know if you feel that the other idea has passed, but for it maybe an instrumental and go more with a dialogue-montage? I love where you were going with the dialogue choices!!

Yay - I'll take a look at that Azazel one as soon as I can. He'd been a pretty interesting character to study I reckon.

I can't see myself ever really doing another Jo and Ellen vid. Especially as there are so many awesome vids out there! (And you've just added to it!!). I was inspired at the time, but I just have too many other ideas yelling for attention.

I'm still really keen on my other idea. I just need to find the right bit of music. I wouldn't mind keeping up the idea of referencing the past with the future. That was another driving force for this vid. To compare Season 1-3, with S4-5.

So, who knows. :).

Hmmmm, I do see why you abandoned the first vid, but not so much on the second. Maybe a different song for the same idea might work on the first vid?

As for the second vid, I think it'd be a great idea to re-work it as a tribute at the end of the season. :D

Looking at your snippets just makes me realize how very little I know these clips having come into SPN fandom with S4. I think I avoided watching SPN vids entirely for 8 months last year while I was catching up on the show. I didn't want my first major vid to be influenced by what I saw so I could at least have the excuse that the clips were new to me. Anyway, even though you say that those clips have been used a gazillion times, they're still pretty fresh to me. :D

Yes! I did! It really came at the perfect time for me. Having these vids just sitting there made me a bit twitchy. I feel better now.. :)

The second vid was mainly because by the end of it, not a lot was going on. I mean, I did't really set out to do a character study vid. But yeah, the feedback I was getting was that it wasn't holding together. I could have re-worked it but I think I just lost interest. Plus there are a heap excellent Jo & Ellen vids. I didn't think this would bring anything different.

I have such a oft spot for those early samndean moments. But I know I have used them in so many vids myself, I think I was just falling back on what I know and love..

Still, I loved the theme behind the vid and the scenes you had going...maybe a more serious song would work? Like you said, it's where the vid was heading anyway.

(But if you do change it, you should totally save Barbara for a crackvid...like if Sam ever gets a buzzcut, you could do a tribute vid to his hair or something :P)

I would LOVE to do a Babs crack vid. And it's initially how I thought this might have gone - but the content was just too serious and then it makes it look like I've pick the song "seriously". It's a kind of Lord King Bad Vid song.... I really should have known that!!!

And a tribute to Sam's hair!! OMG! That's another one I've been wanting to do, like for ever! (well since season 2 after ELaC) - I even listed to music from Hair to see what I could find.... ooooh - maybe I'll think about that again. Hee! :D :D

I can see why the song in the first vid is such a problem. But you were worried about "behind blue eyes" too and that one turned out fantastic. So I'm glad you dare to try stuff. Because there might be another song nobody dares to use and you turn it into something great.

And I like the song for the second vid. Maybe the "happy-ish" reflection didn't work because things weren't so happy with Jo & Ellen. But I think the song would still work with a more "relevant" look at the characters. I would love to see it but I understand if you lost momentum on this vid.

I love the way you turned the "didn't work vids" into a presentable and interesting post. So YAY you for expressing yourself! (I hardly dare to put my vids out there that DID work...lol.)

Indeed. That could be right. I was interested in kind of celebrating their moments in the show, rather than just focusing on their deaths. But in the end the 2 probably didn't meld together so well (happiness and sadness). And I think if I really worked it I could put something together that became more relevant to their stories, but with some many other awesome Jo & Ellen vids out there I think I'll leave it. :)

I think when you've worked really hard on something and the initial feedback is that it isn't quite right you can either become determined to make it right or just let them go. I knew both of these would require quite a bit of work to fix them to the standard I would be happy with, so I decided to leave them because I don't think my heart was really in to it.

And I would LOVE to see you do this meme. It's lovely to actually be able to air and chat about projects that would otherwise fade away and die....

Thanks. I played with it and showed Steph and she also said it works better. Helped show my intention a bit more... but, *sigh* I think there's still a lot to do and my heart isn't really in it any more. Though if I come across another song I wouldn't mind having another crack at the idea... we'll see.

And yes. Nothing like a bit of Mika to cheer things up. I really liked the lyrics in the beginning. Then I just cut out all the other lyrics and skipped to the end, so I could get the happy bits *g*.... I might use this song late on, maybe..

Hats off to you! As an artist (which you totally are!), there can be a vulnerability associated with sharing what you create, especially that which is unfinished.
I can absolutely see what your aim was with both vids, and I still say there's merit in the ideas...it's just a case of all the right ingredients coming together.

Oh yes indeed. It's interesting that having an idea is one thing and actually making it work is another. With both of these vids there was little planning involved.. they just "felt" right and I launched into them very quickly. Sometimes that works for me, but mostly I do a lot of planning. I think I might just stick to lots of planning in the future! :D

This is a great deal of self-criticising! When one manages to understand that about her/his OWN work, then the biggest part of the growing-up process IMO is completed!

PS: wow, what a difficult song choice for the first one! I sometimes get the urges too, to vid to these sweet sugary songs...I have already a handful in mind for S&H too (what a surprise.) It's just very hard to find the right kind of editing to make them work, to avoid they become too celebratory and lose identity. But I must say, I adore the way you edited that one...

Oh yes indeed!! The weird thing is I didn't hear the song and decide to vid to it like I would usually do. I had the idea and went looking for a song. I really wanted something about the way the boys used to be and that's how the song came about. It wasn't until after I finished that I realised how hard it would be to pull that song off!!

I usually like to avoid those types of songs too - I have no idea what I was thinking!! :)

Ah, I know! That's why I was SO glad I found that one in my music folder (I have no idea where it comes from) lately. Now I think I should remaster the old vids, because I destroyed some good songs with WMM when I was younger and more inexperienced (2 or 3 years ago, but feels like a lifetime!)

Despite the fact that the song's not really my coup of tea, I quite like the draft of the Jo and Ellen vid!

And even though I don't vid (yet *cough*), I think I might be able to relate to how much it'd take to post them. If I think about posting writing I'm not content enough with to post it . . . *yikes* My kudos!!

For the Sam/Dean vid, I don't think the clips are the root of your problem (I love the nostraglic clips too!) I agree that the song is quite unusual for SPN, but stranger things have worked! lol. Have you considered opting for a cover version of the song - I'm sure there are covers as it's a fairly popular song!

The Oomph factor for the Ellen/Jo vid might come later! But saving the song til the end of the season (series?) might work really well too!

YEs. In fact I searched for one. I found a version by Shirley Bassey, which is really nice, but still on the side of sappy. I would love to have found some kind of funky re-mix, but alas.

I'm thinking of searching for songs that might be about how things have changed, or how we used to be, or some such thing. It's the hardest thing I reckon. To have an idea and have to go searching for the song...

I did actually finish this vid, and it's the "later" part of the vid that gets bogged down I think. I mean, I could re-work it but I've kinda lost interest, especially as there are so many great Jo&Ellen vids out there.

In one of my initial edits I had Bobby looking at the photo burning in the embers as well as the boys and I wanted it to be about the three of them "reflecting" on their moments Jo and Ellen.

That first bit is Jo centric, because then I focus more on Ellen later on. Though even then, there's not as much of Ellen as I'd like. Yeah - overall, it was a bit muddled.

Though just chatting here makes me think how nice it would be to just do an Ellen centric vid one day (she's really been my fav female SPN character)... I'd love to focus on her being a mother.... hmmmm......

of course, there's just got to be a song....
