For me, I found Misha quite caricatured. In fact, I think the fact that he was so over the top (particularly at the end) made his death even more stocking. It felt like he was "mucking around" and then wham.. he actually died. I found it interesting that they didn't show a close up of his death. It was only seen from a far (Sam and Dean's POV), which leant to a distancing from what was going on.
But that's purely my take. Misha was so likeable, but kind of hollow, that it was hard to take him seriously. Which I think was the point. So when he died it was hard to believe. Or something..
