I am constantly blown away by fans and their generosity and all rounds amazingness.

A YouTuber alerted me to the fact that someone posted one of my vids to their YT. No credit, no acknowledgement that it's not theres - you know, that stealing thing that seems to go on. It was nice to know someone had my back.

Though.. it makes me wonder that, like Tumblr, it might be considered "reblogging"? So repost someone else's vid as a way of passing it on maybe? It doesn't seem right but graphics are reblogged all the time on Tumblr with out credit so maybe it's no different? (ack! I didn't mean to get thinky on this... but it did occur to me).

ha i was just posting about this netiquette today. I think often the person doing it just sees it as like scrapbooking? Just saving a video (or art or fic) for themselves, rather than even reblogging (which is sort of a shared form of it). of course sometimes of course people are passively claiming things as their own, to get the compliments from it.

I mean there's also a case to be argued about embedding vids on LJ too, as that may diminish the number of comments a vidder gets. I mean someone would never repost a story or piece of art on their journal.

I've been criticized for posting a link to a vid on Twitter, and not including the vid makers name in the tweet.

I don't have any answers, I'm just fascinated how we work this stuff out, and whole conventions and social rules develop.

My daughter love Tumblr and she says it's like collecting pictures she likes... so that makes sense to me.

In some ways it doesn't really bother me, in fact it probably should be flattering that someone wants to post a vid of mine. I suppose if they actually said it was there's then it would be an issue. Though... on YT it's weird because it would actually take more effort to upload the vid then say to embed it. Though uploading is quick and easy also.

I think I might add my 2 cents worth when I check out your post. I am quite confuzzled by the whole thing myself. I'm not really sure where I stand on it..

I think its always worth asking for a credit to be given. i also suspect some people reupload vids, because so many disappear - the same way many people save copies of their fav fics.

It's been interesting to watch Tumblr grow as a fannish community, these some amazing graphics work. (and yes the average age does seem to be about 15!)

I am not a regular on Tumblr, but it is fun.

My daughter is downright obsessed with the place.. (and to think I introduced it to her!).. for her it's about how many followers she can gather. Though she's now moaning that friends of hers are posting pics on their Facebook claiming it's "them at the beach"... when clearly it's not.

Her aim now is to call them out... *iz intrigued*

But yes. I think if the artist is known then it's nice to give credit. The worse is claiming something is theirs when it isn't.

For some people, yes. I had this happen to me and when I contacted the person about it, they said they just wanted to share it with their friends. It begs the question why they didn't just link it, but I think language barriers and naivety of basic etiquette come in to play sometimes too.

Yes... I see YT working differently to Tumblr where it's not really about reblogging. If they want to share they can put it in their play lists or in their favourites.

If they repost it they could at least put..."this is not my vid, I'm just sharing".. or something.

Still. I have asked her to take it down. I think the etiquette here has been breached here... (but I do understand language and plain understanding as being a barrier).

This is all very tricky. Where do you (not you, of course) draw the line by saying it is "my work", when in fact it is the work I've added to someone else's work? Way back 10 years ago when I first started vidding I had this very same conversation many times with my vid partner. Now, when I see my vids on YT I'm more like ugh! whatever! Actually, I'm more upset when I see footage from TV that was very rare (for my old fandom)ending up on YT. Converting from VHS tape to AVI was a hard work for me. With 256RAM and maybe 8Gig space on your computer, WMM keep freezing on you... like you know, when I was going to school way back when I had to walk up the hills, both way, kind of thing if that makes any sense, lol.

But what are you going to do? You put it out there on the 'net and it's pretty much anyone to grab and do as they wish. You can only hope that your fans will recognize your work no matter who steal them. I can spot your work miles away. Lord knows I've watched them enough. So on that note, thanks for your hard work. You are one of the generous fans, sweetie.

I've always thought of YT as a place of posting your own vids, rather than grabbing stuff from others just to display it. It doesn't really make sense to me.
I know people have all sorts of different reasons why they do things, but I would have asked her to take it down, too.
But nobody takes my vids...

I once had someone take my Smallville vids, cut the credits out and replace them with their own which is obviously not the same as just reposting someone else's work but either way I think I'd ask them to take them down.

I do think re-posting at youtube is different from re-blogging, or imbedding at LJ, but perhaps not substantively - more by convention. When I rec a vid, I usually add a note that people should think about commenting direct to the vidder at youtube, and I try to drop a note for the vidder telling them where I've recc'd (so they can drop by and see the comments, should they want).

Re posting is different then re-blogging cause when you reblog you reblog it from the site the credit or the person who posted it so they always have credit. Re-posting is where you take their work whether it be vid, graphics etc. and post it as yourself even if you mention credit it's kinda wrong. I got into a tiff over at tumblr over someone who was posting other people's stuff though mentioning credit it just wasn't right. I tried to explain to her it was their thing to post and get notes/credit on not yours. But sometimes language barriers can be confusing, or some people are just plain mean.

Tumblr is a special case, though. Credit is somewhat inherent in the reblog. When you reblog it says who you got it from and stores a history of who posted it and all the times it's been liked and reblogged in the notes.

And when it's not a gif/graphic but actual artwork or photography, an actual credit line is still expected to be given even on Tumblr.

And I do see reposting a vid on YT as a breach of netiquette because it's implicit on YT that you own the content you upload, unlike on Tumblr. So just the act of uploading a vid implies that you made it because there are other venues for sharing/distributing it without having to repost it to your own account.

I'm hoping that putting my name in the credits and having personal watermark will dissuade people from putting it up as their own, but that's no guaranty either. Otherwise you just have to keep posting comments on youtube pointing out that the vid is 'stolen' - but it might not be worth the hassle...

First up I just have to *bow down* to the skill and patience it would take to convert files from VHS to avi and all that - basically paving the way for vidding today. I keep hearing about the beginnings of vidding and I am in awe. Such dedication I reckon.

Exactly. I was saying to someone recently that once you release something to the "world" it's up for grabs. Sure, credit is nice and polite but how to police it is a difficult one. In this case I was pleased that someone did recognise my vid and alerted me to the fact that someone had posted it.

I commented asking her to remove it and that if she wanted to share it she should have asked. It now as a "blurb" in Russian. No idea what it says though.

I definitely see it has posting and not sharing by posting it to their own site. They can always "favourite" if they want to keep it.

She hasn't taken it down. She put a blurb in Russian though - but no idea what it says.

No one is watching it though so I don't think I'm too bothered.

Oh wow.. how rude. That's unbelievable. That's definitely stealing. I do hear of this stuff happening. I wouldn't know about it happening to my vids because I just don't go on YT enough. That's why I am grateful someone alerted me to it.

Yes. I've never thought that reposting a vid is a way of "sharing" it the way we do when we embed it. (what a messy sentence... I hope that makes sense..).

I can see how it works here, especially if the vidder is actually mentioned. Or there's a link to the actual vidder's profile or site.

Yeah - see I don't think I really understand how Tumblr works, I'm just not over there enough to figure it all out. I was curious is, since Tumblr started more people are reposting vids on YT as a way of sharing. I don't think it's right though.

I have had people ask me if they could post my vid on their tumblr and I've said yes. I figure it gets shared and that's nice. It's even nicer when they come back and tell me how many "notes" it had. My hope is that credit is given when people do post my vids. (It's why I put my name in the subject line now. At least my name is one the vid. I should watermark I suppose..)

Aaaaah - I didn't realise that about reblogging. So you could trace the source back if you wanted to. I get that. It's interesting then how many gifs/graphics make it to LJ without credit... though I've noticed a lot of stuff now has tumblr watermarks on them.

And yes about YT. I think it's rude to upload someone else's work. even if it's to share... but there are other avenues of sharing on YT - like favourites for example.

Maybe I should be kicking up more of a fuss. I checked though and no one is watching so...*shrugs* I don't know what to do..

Yes.. I've thought about watermarks... especially as I get asked if peeps can post a vid of mine on their Tumblr or Facebook. I'm always flattered to be asked, so I don;t mind but it probably also means other stuff gets posted without me knowing. But, I figure once it's out there in the big wide world not much can be done...

Except request removal. Which I did. But she didn't...
