Sam's brain is torturing him with Stairway to Heaven on repeat. Aside from the irony of the devil singing that song, it gives you an idea of what Sam must have heard enough in real life to bug him in the first place.

I'm going with their end run being a genetically engineered docile food source but who knows. Maybe they need the cancer cure for themselves.
