I have no idea about number of eps for Cas. However, I rewatched Croatoan last night and had a similar thought when Dean mentioned being tired, since I think of Season 1-2 as SPN Lite at this point, even though they're very dark compared to some other shows.
I think that narrative need to keep putting the boys through things is why at one point in Season 5 I was hoping the show would end after that season. It just didn't seem like the show could find something else even semi-believable for them to fight after dealing with the frigging Apocalypse, and didn't they deserve a break? However, now I'm glad the show continued, since we've had some wonderful bits in S6-7, but yes, I think Sam and Dean must be superhuman to still be keeping on after everything.
At least we do get to see some damage on SPN. One of my favorite SG-1 writers wrote some great stuff by dealing with the damage that the show rarely ever carried over from ep to ep, never mind season to season.
