IKR! I figured Bobby's sweat and possibly alcohol/saliva dribble soaking into the leather cover was what tied Bobby's spirit to the flask. O_o
Although we didn't see it, we did watch the boys watching Bobby 'burn away'. At the time I wondered why his burnout went so much slower (and quieter) that all the other salt and burns of ghosts that we've seen on SPN. Was it because Bobby made the choice to go? Is the fact that it was Bobby's choice to move on that made it seem that he passed on more like Molly in Roadkill, making the burning of the flask more of a symbolic gesture so the leather cover didn't need to be burned also? After all, The boys didn't salt the flask. Am I just being too thinky?? ;P
I started wondering if we had seen Bobby using the leather covered flask (seems I vaguely remember Bobby sharing his flask with Dean, but I can't recall which episode or even season that might have been in... if it even happened), or if maybe the leather cover belonged to Dean and he just used it on Bobby's flask as a protective covering. I was going to search and see if this could be the answer to this puzzling question, but apparently my spn trivia mojo isn't what it used to be. :( It's been so long since I've worked on a fanvid that I've discovered I don't remember the episodes as well now that I'm not searching through them regularly. I guess if you don't use it then you lose it! The leather cover wasn't on the flask Dean shared with Sam at the end of HotH... and that seems to be the only time that I can remember and find at the moment. /fail *facepalm*
