Motels and Accommodations of Supernatural - Season 5
Part Two
5.12 Swap Meat Accommodation: The Lucky Star Motor Inn ![]() |
| Exterior We don't get to see much of this room, which is a shame because I think it would be quite interesting. I love it when they use flock wallpaper. It's decorative and often outlandish. The tiles and the sink in the bathroom are 40's style while the chair looks like it could come from the 60s. The Floor Plan makes another appearance. 5.13 The Song Remains The Same Accommodation: Unnamed motel
Exterior Orange is particularly dominant in this colour scheme. It can (and often does) represent danger. This is the episode when the boys' parents lives are threatened and Cas sends them back to the past. Though I think of this as the "Team Free Will" room, so I feel that the orange here represents hope and strength. Both the wallpaper and the room divider feature circles. A sense of "going around in circles" perhaps? It was a major theme of the episode. If you recognise that room divider it's because it was also used in Bad Day at Black Rock. In the "past" Dean checks Castiel into the honeymoon suite at The Prairie Court Motel, but we don't see inside it. 5.14 My Bloody Valentine Accommodation: Diamond Jack’s (Room 204)
Room Card The most curious thing about this room is its name - "Diamond Jack's". I can't help feel it's a deliberate choice. It would have been more fitting in the episode Curious Case of Dean Winchester, as it seems to be a playing card reference. It may be a reference to gangster Jack Diamond. Apparently he was known for being a womaniser and having a flamboyant life style. [source]. As this was a Valentine's based episode it may have been in reference to that? I do rather like the interior design. It has a lovely 40's, art deco style (check out that sofa and side unit!) The funky red and green wall paper matches the style. Prop reuse: Brick wall: 5.07, 5.08, 5.18, 7.15, 7.18 The Floor Plan 5.16 Dark Side Of The Moon Accommodation: Econo King Motel
*meep* the room where the boys are shot and where the trashcan became resting place of the beloved amulet. *sniff* Like many of the motel rooms this has a mix of styles. The bathroom looks fairly modern but the wallpaper and chair are old-fashioned. It's curious that they re-used the flooring from My Bloody Valentine. We didn't see a motel in 5.15 (Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid) so this room was probably constructed straight after episode 5.14. 5.17 99 Problems Accommodation: Uncle Erv’s Green Valley Motel
Exterior Yay! Back to a strongly themed room. This has a pioneering / western style feel. I particularly love the lamps and the red sofa with the bull imprinted on it. The colors are fabulous. And it has a great name. I can't find any reference to "Uncle Erv", so I'm assuming the name has come from the owner of the motel. Bedhead reused: 1.18, 2.12, 3.15, 4.15, 5.04 The Floor Plan 5.18 Point Of No Return Accommodation: Mike’s Travel Inn (Room 100)
Room Card Wow! They sure liked that green checked floor this season. That's the 3rd time we've seen it. The most wonderful thing about this room is the room divider. Look how the red cross is aglow next to Sam. It has to be deliberately lit like that because I can't figure how the "natural" light would create that glow. I'm sure there's multiple layers of meaning here - from a warning of danger ahead to the battle the boys are having with the angels at this point in the show. Bedspread also seen in 5.03 The room number is a reference to this being the 100th episode. I also love the starburst clock. It's not the same one as we've seen many times before, but it is similar. Brick Wall used: 5.07, 5.08, 5.18, 5.14, 7.15, 7.18 5.19 Hammer Of The Gods Accommodation: The Elysian Fields Hotel
This is the last hotel we see this season. This is so fabulous because it isn't like any the boys would normally stay at. It almost exists to show us what "normal" hotel look like. More 4 start than 2.5 star. It's all very stylish and comfortable looking. They really should have figured something was wrong as soon as they walked in. They're like fish out of water. Maybe that's why the enter looking so wet. :) The name Elysium refers to: in Greek mythology, the final resting places of the souls of the heroic and the virtuous. [source] Most apt.
I do just have to share the motel room seen in the DVD Gabriel made for the boys. The room number is 69 (most appropriate for a Casa Erotica motel room). And does that bed head look familiar?! (last seen in 5.07!!). So there you have it. A great mix of rooms again this season and it's wonderful to see so many of their names. If you spot something I've missed (prop re-use, location, exterior) please feel free to tell me and I can update this entry. :)) Special thanks to Screencaps care of

Date: 2012-08-04 10:00 am (UTC)Yeah, the prop post seemed to be the best way to do it. I can build on it for the next seasons, and maybe even add some new stuff if it reoccurs enough. ;)
Thanks again for your help.

Date: 2012-08-04 02:20 pm (UTC)I often think it must for awful for them to go to all the trouble to dress these sets only to tear them down to make the next one. Though I suppose they are immortalized on film...
Thanks for your comment hun.

Date: 2012-08-04 02:42 pm (UTC)5x16 was initially supposed to air right after 5x14, I'm pretty sure the two were at least filmed back to back.
I looove posts focusing on details like the rooms.

Date: 2012-08-05 12:27 pm (UTC)This is wonderful, I had not noticed the Changing Channels rooms were the same! How neat! I love the details you collect with these, it's a very sharp eye indeed that could have picked out that lotus blossom looking headboard on a screen the guys were watching!
Yeah, you win at this and at getting me to look more closely at their surroundings - see I don't often focus on the background! Hehe...

Date: 2012-08-06 03:03 pm (UTC)Interesting there was a Dutch theme in the motel room for Free To Be--remembering Dean saying (in season 2?) he wanted to go to Amsterdam. Why it would be a Dutch theme here in particular I'm not sure, maybe it's not meant to recall anything, but given Dean's despair in Point of No Return later in season 5, and Amsterdam representing escape/a different life, maybe it's a nod to that.

Date: 2012-08-08 10:17 am (UTC)Hee... yeah. it was really quick and easy to put together...;) (I wish! *g*).
Ooooh... I love the idea that it could be a call back to wanting to run away to Amsterdam. It would be SO COOL if that was the case. It seems such a strange bit of detail. They could have made the whole room obviously "Dutch" - tulips for flowers etc. but they kept it pretty minimal.
thanks so much for stopping by honey. <33
