I got to the part where she ordered people not to add comments to reblogs, got annoyed and closed it. :(

Oh I'm sorry hun. I think that was more about not deleting the original posters comment. Probably wasn't meant to be an order - more a suggestion. But I think people can do (and usually do do) what they like any way. I usually add comments to my reboots. I like to add my opinion or reason for reblogging. :)

You don't have to apologize! It just struck me as someone trying to enforce their own standards and pet peeves on everybody. And I don't think anyone should be telling people how to "do" fandomm yanno? It kind of crosses the line for me. Maybe I am being overly sensitive?

I'm apologising because it really wasn't meant as a "how to do fandom" at all. *yikes* I'm sorry it came across that way. It was meant to simply be how to create a tumblr if you don't have one, tips and some of the etiquette over there. Maybe the etiquette is an individual thing rather than a set rule. I know those things can be murky. ;)

Oooookay - so tumblr is for regurgitating content, NOT communicating or commenting (unless in tags), getting hate mail and drawn into arguments........

*backing away slowly towards the door*

It's not for me, I'm afraid. so I appreciate the time someone took to lay it all out there.

Actually.. is this the bit?

Please remember that most graphic makers do not appreciate comments on their gif sets/graphics. So as part of tumblr etiquette, if you have something to say. Say it in the tags.

To me I'd say that that might well be part of the tumblr etiquette but I personally don't agree with it. I love comments on my graphics and I HATE comments in the tags. That's not to say the etiquette isn't true. I will never comment in the tags and I will always love comments on my gifs. Maybe if enough of us do it the "etiquette" can be changed?

If that's not it can you let me know which bit is a problem?

Thanks!

Well, it is what it is. I don't think she means to 'tell you how to do fandom', but rather that 'this is how you have to do tumblr in order not get eaten by the trolls'. I've heard it before that commenting is 'not the done thing' on tumblr.

Some of her wording is maybe a tad strong, but as I say, I think that just unfortunate choice of words, rather that any intend to upset people or make them do thing her way - it's more like doing things the tumblr way? Put it put me off tumblr even more than before....

From my experience it is very much about regurgitating content (though I'd call it sharing) and the commenting in the tags seems to be something that's done for a very strange reason. Personally it drives me nuts so I just don't do it. I often comment when I'm reblogging because I like to say why I reblogged it (like a rec) and I'll use the tags as, well... tags.

I've been on there for a little while now and I have not seen the hate mail and I don't get drawn into arguments. So far the experience has been ok - good in fact. Personally I love being able to make gifs so maybe it's that. I also enjoy the gorgeous artworks and seeing the fan talent. I think a fan site is only what you make of it.

It's a shame you didn't write the etiquette section, you make it sound way more apealing than the one that is up. But don't fret over it, it's very comprehensive and well intentioned, and does what it says on the tin.

That's the main part that bothered me, but she went on to say something like "just trust me and don't do it". I've been on tumblr for a while too and I've never gotten any hate for adding my own comments so I don't even know what she's talking about. Also a lot of the etiquette part reads more like a bunch of rules rather than suggestions. A lot of "you must do this" and "never do that".

Anyway comments are how you get conversation going and part of using a blog is communicating. Of course people should be aware that anybody looking at the notes can see your comments as well.

That does strike me as a weird etiquette if so - one of the reasons I really don't like tumblr is that you can't add a comment to most posts so reblogging with your own comment (which is usually why you are reblogging something) is often the only way you can say wow this is great - or whatever. I admit, I have no idea how you'd comment in a tag.

Yeah - it's frustrating not being able to add a comment just to a post without reblogging it. But...I suppose my thinking changed once I started actually making stuff. Once I realized that it worked differently to LJ I started to see it differently. Over there reblogging is the highest compliment you can give some work and so doing that it a way of saying I really like it. It also means you get to "keep" something - as well as share it.

For some reason the tag area is used to (sometimes!) say stuff. I am still baffled by this.

It's so frustrating when you're used to talking and communicating on livejournal. I do say "sod it" sometimes and say how beautiful something is in the caption box some days, hey, I have only a handful of followers so what the shit? Not as though anyone is going to notice! I do usually keep my comments to the tags - I often want to say something, but realize no one else necessarily needs to hear it.

However, I can see why it's frowned on, when some posts get thousands of notes, and if it's rebogged by someone with hundreds of followers, imagine what it would look like if even half of those followers liked it, re-blogged and left a comment. The post would be huge and so confusing, well, just between you and me (and your flist) I find the whole commenting section bloody confusing to begin with, can hardly tell who's saying what.

Tumblr is not somewhere I feel welcome or at hone, it's amazingly pretty, has some interesting things to say, like most of the internet is full of shit at times and I don't expect the novelty to last much longer with me. I've enjoyed re-kindling my love for show, I've enjoyed seeing the scene comparison gif sets, and the quotes etc., but once the spoilers start coming out? I think I'll toss it.

And yes, there are some horribly rude fans over there, I've seen some 'asks' to artists where I'd honestly like to kick 'anonymous' in the teeth - nasty, grubby, ungrateful little shits.

I suppose... I'm not convinced. I still think having someone comment is miles better than just reblogging. You could reblog something because it's ridiculous or stupid or for any number of reasons...

From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
I think the penny has only just now dropped as to why people write comments in the tags boxes. It makes sense that if someone reblogs something they might not want to reblog your added comment - though I always thoughts you could just delete that comment when you reblogged it. The tags aren't carried over on a reblog so I can see why that has become a way to comment. though, I've seen people comment on their own journal in the tags...now that doesn't make much sense at all. But...each to their own.

I like that I can pop over there when I'm in the mood or not bother if not. On LJ I always try and check all my friends posts - so I go back until I hit where I last got up to. I used to try that with tumblr but it's just too hard. Not only because finding where you're up too is hard with all the similar pics and reblogs but I don't feel like I need to see everything. If I happen upon it then good, if I miss it then I'm not at all worried. I have enjoyed making and posting gifs - it's been an added thing to my fandom experience. It has meant I've slowed my vid making down because I keep making gifs!

I'm glad I haven't seem much of the nastiness. Too much of that would put me off completely.

(and I'm going to be grabby hands for all the spoilers! *g*)

I've been on Tumblr a year, and I don't get hate mail because I don't have my ask box open. I don't actually want to talk to people there. Ever. I've never seen any arguments. (It's all in who you follow.) I comment on other people's posts in tags constantly, and it's freeing because once in a while I say what I really think, as opposed to LJ where I more or less stopped having public opinions in 2009. And I reblog some amazing stuff on Tumblr that people on LJ would love, but I'm not going to bother posting it here. That's what I have a tumblr for. *g* So I think it's very much a YMMV thing, but tumblr brings me a lot of joy. I was opposed to it until I tried it, and now I wouldn't give it up.

I guess that 'Tumblr for Dummies' post made it sound worse than it is? Or the person who wrote it uses it differently. It made it sound rather unsavoury. Shame, it might put some people off. I, myself, don't have enough time for LJ as it is, so I'm not 'in the market' for a new or additional platform. If I ever have more time I first probably would explore dreamwidth, I guess, since I'm more into the talking stuff anyway. But it great that there is so much choice nowadays.

First off, I would actually like to get on here and defend myself.

Coming from my standpoint, this is the knowledge I have of tumblr and how fandom operates on tumblr.

Commenting on graphics isn't about getting hate, it's about the person who MAKES the gif set. Most prefer the notes to comments. Why? Because comments snowballs. Comments can get changed and then the maker has to deal with a full blown discussion on their graphic they'll have to see.

What the commenter DOESN'T see is the maker often times mocking the comment/saying how annoyed they're with the comments. I see it plenty enough from my friends who make things and get comments.

That's why on tumblr, putting your comments on the tags is often a better option to the latter.

I don't say any of this to be rude or pushy, if anything I offended that that was assumed. This is coming from tumblr as a culture. People on tumblr can often be assholes and be mean. It's not like it is on livejournal at all. They're two completely different websites with a completely different atmosphere. I speak from experience and observation, not from person set rules. This is the bare basics of what tumblr is. If that is unappealing, that is not my fault, that's just tumblr and sugar coating it what help anyone.

On livejournal artists, writers, etc. like comments. That's how you express yourself. However, on tumblr bloggers like notes, followers, and likes. They don't like comments, especially well known famous fandom bloggers.

Maybe if it is a lesser known blog starting out with making things I can understand the comments and see that they would like that. However, higher ups the ones that make the MAJORITY of fandom edits you see often times don't appreciate the comments as much as they do you reblogging it.

That may sound shallow, but that is simply tumblr.

I'm agreeing with you here. I don't know how many times I've seen "keep it in the tags!" referring to comments made on posts, and how many times people have been upset to have their post overrun and turned into something else entirely.

Tumblr is its own distinct platform for interacting, and it's not set up in a way that facilitates conversation. But that's okay! That's why we have LJ, DW, AO3, dA, etc. I like tumblr exactly because of that. If I want to, I can post a drawing and not say anything, and see if it gets likes and reblogs and stuff. If I want to see if people are leaving comments on it, I check out the reblogs and look at their tags. It's kind of like hide & seek, haha, and I don't feel the compulsion to respond.

I've had my art reblogged with comments added, and sometimes that's totally fine. Sometimes it's men's masturbation blogs, haha. Sometimes it's people roleplaying, and they'll keeep going back and forth, adding more stuff, and it keeps popping up in my inbox. It's worse when it's for a pairing that wasn't originally indicated in the picture.

That stuff doesn't really bug me all that much, BUT--I'm reeeeeally laid back. I have seen it bother friends, and I've seen it bother people who are many magnitudes more popular than me. Not because they're just grumpy, but because it makes their tumblr experience a lot less convenient. Alsooo, some of those comments? May contain things the OP didn't mean (i.e comments implying underage, non-con) or may contain things that the OP is very sensitive to.

I know that comes down to 'the internet is not a safe space,' but the post being discussed here was about tumblr etiquette, not tumblr survival, you know? I love tumblr. It can be a sprawling, ever-moving visual landscape of things that you make grabby hands at. You can open it one morning and get shot in the gut with so many feels you're reeling all day. You can make friends, even without commenting. Reblogging, sharing interests, sending each other asks, tagging people you like in your posts--that's how a lot of friendships get started.

I think I'm rambling, but I just wanted to say that while I don't have a horse in this race, I think cherry916's advice was spot-on, and tumblr isn't as scary as a lot of people think.

Where's the like/reblog button, I ask?

Date: 2013-07-08 03:07 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
Ah...they are symbols. They appear on the bottom right hand side of the post (heart for like and arrows for reblog). That's if you are looking via your dash - so scrolling down all the posts. If you are on someone's actual blog - the likes and reblog symbols can be anywhere. Sometimes they take a bit of finding - it depends on the individual layouts.

The options can also appear on the top right hand corner - if you have been given a link to specific page.

I hope that makes some sense.

Hey honey,

Thanks so much for your thoughts on this. I don't nearly have enough experience to know how these rules work, so it's great that you (and Cherry) do. I imagine your stuff gets reblogged a heap so it's great to hear your side of it. I think Cherry has seen some of the nastier side of tumblr so I think there are some good warnings in there.

Someone starting out - like me - may not come across this stuff in the beginning, but it's good to know some things to avoid when trying not to piss people off. ;)

Thanks
xx

Hi :) I just wanted to add a bit to the other side of it, because it seemed like the etiquette section was being dismissed, when it really is good advice for those starting as newbie-newbs on tumblr. It does have its own etiquette, and I'm still trying to figure out which spoon you use for the soup.

I haven't seen a lot of the nastier side of tumblr directly (just a little bit) but I've seen other people's arguments and hatefulness a LOT. But there's nastiness almost everywhere, you just have to look a little harder to find it in some places, haha. I tend to get curious and look for it *_*

The thing with the tags is--whatever you put in the tags, all your followers can read. so you can write a lot about how you feel about a post, what's in it, how gorgeous it is, how hot, and everybody who sees it from you sees what you said. I've seen short fics written in the tags, and I love it. It's almost like plain conversation--such an ethereal thing. you say something, people hear it. then they reblog the post and it's a blank slate for them to say something.

And then sometimes people reblog other people's tags with the post! lol

that said, I do like getting comments sometimes on my art. I prefer the comments I get here, though, because it's a better format and it's easier for me to answer them.

I really like getting comments on text posts, which I think cherry may have overlooked? if I'm asking a question or making a statement that invites conversation, you bet your tuckus I want people to talk to me :)
