Date: 2013-09-13 03:16 pm (UTC)My daughter who has now attended parts of 2 cons with me and who has watched (years ago) most of S1, some of S2, and sporatic eps that I force on her. She loves Felicia Day and Kim Rhodes (after seeing her at Vancon 2012). After attending 2 cons she *wants* to watch all of the show, but somehow can't. So Emily commented to me several weeks ago after trying (again) to make it through S2 (! really? I still cannot get having *trouble* getting through S2, but whatever.) She came to me and asked sincerely, "Mom, why do people even like Sam?" I was all, "WHUT!!!???" Emily is of course completely outside of SPN fandom and her only knowledge is via me and what she's been exposed to during the con panels she's attended. When I questioned her more, she said she's basically neutral on both the characters (!!! again, WHUT?) but from what she could see, Sam was "selfish." Again I was a bit internally heartbroken that my own daughter could even be thinking this. Of course I went into all kinds of Sam backstory, explanations, etc. And she kinda got it. But it did get me realizing that these brother wars that can/do erupt are, sadly and unfortunately, so open to subjectivity that it kinda breaks me a bit. :(
And on a bit more of the internal heartbreak, my daughter saying that Dean is "meh, whatever" is like, WHUT (repeating myself yet again.) Don't judge her, she knows not what she says. (And I really do NOT want to even approach her comments regarding Cas. Talk about flame wars.) Contrarily she LOVES the cons and all the guests. She fell in love with Rob and Seb especially last time. She fell for Richard at her first con. She went to my solo J photo ops with me at her first con (and did go a tad bit gah-gah over both the boys for a short time), but passed it up when I offered at her 2nd con. She wanted to hang out around the vendor room hoping to talk again with Felicia. She "likes" the Js, but she doesn't quite get all the hype around them. But get her in the same room with Felicia and she fangirls like the best of us.
I probably shouldn't even be commenting regarding this because I don't want to turn a happy bi-bro-ish post into something other than that. NOT my intention. It's more me as always, fascinated by fandom sociology/culture.
Adding to this that if you want to delete this comment, I would totally support it. I kept cycling between hitting the back button versus post. I just am so fascinated by people's reactions/interpretations of characters, that I finally hit post.

Date: 2013-09-14 01:41 am (UTC)This is fascinating to me also and it's something I ponder on myself. My daughter has no interest whatsoever in the show or the boys. Admittedly, she's only 16 and they probably look "too old" to her. She not into the same things I am anyway (she's a romcom watcher mostly). When she sees the boys she often says.."I don't know what you see in them"...sheeeessshh....
I think the way you look at a character is certainly personal. I did a post a while back about what makes each of us attracted to a certain type of character (well, it was about whether being a younger or older sibling swayed your attraction).
Sam's so called selfishness has been one of the main arguments against Sam in...well, forever. It's probably lucky I came into fandom after the first season because it would have broken my heart to read all that hate. Personally, I never saw the selfishness so I never felt that level of dislike others seemed to have. I saw a young man struggling to find his identity outside of his family - some read that as selfishness so I mostly just shrug at that.
Personally, I think both characters are selfish in their own ways. Dean can't seem to live without Sam (going so far as to bring him back from the dead which increased Sam's suffering tenfold) and Sam can't seem to accept the hunting life fully, which impacts on him not accepting Dean fully. But these qualities are essential to their characterisations. It's what makes them who they are and it's what creates the drama. If they were perfect, without flaws then they would be very uninteresting.
But no amount of arguing can persuade someone who dislikes Sam (or Dean for that matter - though that's rather rare I think...) to suddenly understand him and start to like him. I think for many it's just a gut reaction to the characters. If someone dislikes a character for some reason then they can always find evidence in the show that makes them "bad". In Sam's case it's a perceived selfishness. The show plays into that something (like Sam not looking for Dean)- which annoys me a bit because fans don't need any MORE reasons to dislike him.
Hee...I blabbed! You can see I love talking about this stuff too. As a um...bibro Sam girl it completely baffles me why Sam isn't liked by quite a lot of the fandom. I get that Dean is classically good looking and has all the appealing Han Solo type characteristics - but to me Sam is just as gorgeous and has characteristics that are just as endearing. But we are all different and that's all I can put it down to. (Some people find Cas attractive and see...I just can't see it. So I figure we all look at things differently...:D)

I know! It's not possible! I have a super soft spot for Sam but Dean is awesomesauce and there cannot be one without the other!

Date: 2013-09-14 03:13 pm (UTC)And no I don't think we have :). I happened to notice you post about Sam on Galathea's page and thought I'd add you. While I have plenty of people on my friends list who love Dean and Castiel (I love all three *hides*) I needed more Sammy fans in my life ;)
