2. I wish there was a place to request podfics. There are a few Big Bang stories I desperately want to read, but time is against me as per usual. I wonder if there is a "podfic by request" comm. "Podfics R Us" maybe. Or "Podfics On Demand". I mean, I know there wouldn't be, but one can dream and/or hope. :)
Speaking of podfics I've just finished listening to Queensguard and it was made of complete win! I didn't want it to end.
3. I was 13 when Star Wars arrived on the big screens. It's one of those films that had a big impact on my future love of cinema and movies. Hubby and I decided that as our daughter is now 13 it would be interesting to see what she thought of it. She's not that interested in Sci-fi, but we said it's one of those must see films. So we watched it as a family (which is always nice). Of course she sat there saying... "oh this from Futurama" or, "that's from The Simpsons". And she didn't let up when I told her I had a crush on Luke Skywalker. She's all "ewwwww". :) I haven't seen it for ages. I still love it and I'm amazed how well it holds up 30 years later.
4. Saw a vid recently and it blew me away. With over 8 million views I'm pretty sure you may have seen it, but just in case you haven't: Embrace Life I love the concept and the execution. I mean it's professionally made but from what I can tell was made specifically for YT. It's worth a look.
5. Vid. Arggh! I need to put my wrestling gear on when I work on this one. It's 4 mins, which for me is fairly long, but I need every second to be able to flesh this one out. I just hope I can win a round soon. *gets it in a headlock*

hedonist_bot is an up and coming playwright. I've directed a couple of his one act plays and he's just scored an opening at The Blue Room (professional alternative theatre venue in Perth) - which in itself is awesome, but he's been receiving glowing reviews since it's opened. I'm seeing it next week. I read an early draft so I'll be interested to see how it's developed. I just love success stories. He's been writing for a number of years and he's finally caught a break. Let's hope it's all up hill from here for him.
That's it. That's enough randoness for one night. <33

Date: 2010-06-19 02:06 pm (UTC)And: haha, wrestling your vid! Mine feels more like a neverending walk through the desert. I don't know if I get there before the water bottle is empty...lol.
Star Wars is timeless. It will still be great when we are all dust in the wind..(or have been salted and burned - haha).
When I find a little time I'll check out the links. :)

Date: 2010-06-19 02:27 pm (UTC)That vid link is def worth a look. More so conceptually than anything else.
:D I wonder which one of us will get their vid finished first...

Date: 2010-06-19 04:51 pm (UTC)Funny about your daughter picking up on all the current callbacks back to the film -- kind of makes you wonder how she interpreted them in the first place since she didn't know the reference? One of the things Mike and I laugh about so much with Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert is that, being our age, (as no doubt are their writers), they are constantly making references to things from our generation. I keep wondering how much of it goes over the heads of their college age viewers.
Jinjur made a post a few days ago talking about all the requests she receives with people wanting podfics to be made. You'd think a match-up community could be started as with betas and artists (though on the art front, there aren't so many of those either). And it always thrills me to come across a podfic of long or BB stories because those are exactly the ones I'd most like to have read.
I don't know if you saw her post but apparently some people have resorted to doing screenreader recordings of the works.

Date: 2010-06-20 12:33 am (UTC)This has been quite a complex vid. I've been working closely with my bidder, which has been fantastic because I want to get it right for her. And as it's a "meta" style, character study vid there's lots to be considered. But you know me, I angst over all my vids! :D

Date: 2010-06-20 12:44 am (UTC)I wonder this all the time. We often say - "that's from..." and talk about the film, or TV reference. Something that The Simpsons does very well is allow easy access to so many cultural and pop-cultural references for children. I remember the "Macbeth" episode - which opened up all sorts of discussion with her. Though I'm sure it all sails over her head. I find it amusing that the thinking is that these shows thought of it first. I think she thought Star Wars was copying those shows.
You'd think a match-up community could be started
That would be great. I wonder if podficcers ever wonder "what should I record next?". If they did they could go and see what's being requested and do something from there. (A bit the way we have set up the "Inspiration Post" at spn_sceneit). Though I suspect they mostly choose stories they love.
I didn't see her post. I'll have to take a look, And really screenreader recordings? So it would sound very digital. Not sure I could resort to that. I love the idea that someone (a person!) is actually sharing the fic experience with me. Weird, but I think that's also part of my enjoyment of podfics.

Date: 2010-06-20 02:29 am (UTC)You can find it here.
Yes, exactly. I can't imagine a computer equaling a person, although I could concede that perhaps a second language speaker might find the repetitive monotone of a computer easier to follow than a bevy of different voices and approaches.
Also followed your link for that commercial -- what an imaginative ad, and it translates so well (speaking of languages).
And yay for almost being done with your wrestling ;)

Date: 2010-06-21 01:31 pm (UTC)Just had to pop by and thank you again for that podfic essay link. I've just had a read and it was brilliant. It made a lot of sense and has made me realise that I'm not the only one who connects very strongly with the reader during the podfic experience. Also made me realise how much of an art form podficcing is (though I think I was aware of that when I heard my very first reading), but it was amazing to read about it.
And as suspected, I knew readers would pick stories they loved and not ones that would be requested. Which of course makes sense. Though I suppose there might be opportunities when Sweet Charity comes around if a reader put themselves up for auction. :)
It sounds like podfics are becoming an increasingly popular medium so chances are more stories will be read. Let's hope anyway.

Date: 2010-06-21 04:58 pm (UTC)In part I know this is because many of these authors have become inactive on LJ and few are still in the Buffyverse fandom either. But I know a number are reachable and at least one is open to having her stuff recorded. So I have to think it's because no one's thinking to ask and that just seems like a shame. I know it can't be for lack of love for those stories, but I do think it has to do with the general sentiment in LJ fandoms of being current. Things move very quickly around here and there seems to be a lot of focus on recording newer stories and not older ones.
