It a good idea to PLAN a vid before launching in. It will save hours of worthless clipping AND you wouldn't have to delete half the thing and start over again.... *sigh*.

At least I (think) I know what I am doing now...

Hee! well... I was inspired. Very inspired and then was about 3 seconds from the finish and realised what I put together was a pile of unfocused crap.

But that's ok. At least I think I know what I need to do now.

Good luck with the comp btw.

Sometimes though, the plan isn't always as forthcoming right at the beginning as it might be when you've spent hours clipping away at other stuff...

Yes, exactly..

I changed directions once I could see where I thought I was going just wasn't doing it for me... shame that was after hours of clipping I didn't need to do. But.. that's the way it goes sometimes. :)

You mean you "don't like" all that needless clipping???

Isn't that the fun part of vidding. :P

ARGHHHH... I hate it! A necessary evil I reckon..

I know I'm the odd man out here. I actually find clipping to be a sort of zen like experience. I scrub through the episodes looking for what will work. I know that most vidders dread that part of the process...

From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
Oh really? Nah... drives me nuts. In fact I do this big sigh before I start a new vid when I think of the clipping work ahead. I'd rather just have then all there start playing.. :)

Hee... I also get very distracted a long the way. I often stop and watch an entire scene and realise I have just wasted precious vidding time. :)

Sounds like I need to find the "zen" in the experience.

I have made my life much easier of late. I created an iTunes library of all the clips I've made. Then I use the Comments field as a "tag" field. That way I can add whowas in the clip, what was in the clip, what they were doing, and so on. Right now I've only got my Doctor Who clips in there but I am working on a second library with all the other clips.

A clip library is something to look into if you vid the same show a lot. :)

Oh. I had no idea you could do that.

I used to save all my clips but since moving to FCE the clips are far too big to keep a library of them. I mean, I have plenty of disc space but I am conscience of filling it up with such large clip files.

I have kept a a folder few regularly used clips, but I usually delete all my clips after each project.

Hmm..iTunes eh? Do you make your clips .dv?? I find FC likes them the most. Maybe there's a smaller file format I could be using?

Date: 2011-01-21 12:15 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] greenpear.livejournal.com
It will accept .dv as well as .mp4 and .mov (Quicktime) clips. And remember, it's geared to hold tv shows and movies so size is generally not an issue.

But if you have a lot of clips I'd say pop the library on an external drive. When you want to use it make iTunes choose a different library than you normal one. The important thing is to quit iTunes before doing this. You definitely don't want to get those library.xml files mixed up.

I leave iTunes in the dock. I press and hold the Option key then click iTunes. It will then ask me if I want to create a new library or choose a different library. I pick my Doctor Who library and everything I need is one place.

And when I need to tell FCP to use a clip I drag it right from the iTunes library. That way everything is always in one place.

If you're interested I can give you the process in greater detail.

Hee! We have 3 external drives. My hubby bought me one especially for my vidding. :) So yeah - they are all on a rather large drive so really, I shouldn't worry about filling it up.

I'll probably stick to what I am doing. Hubby uses iTunes a lot and I'd hate to mess with it. My filing system works pretty well. I think I just gotta stop deleting clips all the time.

Thanks! :)

The point of this is the only thing you do is point it to a different directory. It never touches the original library file. You have two distinct library with two distinct sets of files.

After you're done vidding quit iTunes then start it again the same way only select you "normal" library.

It's the journey, babe, not the destination, that counts. I totally believe that the journey is still visible in the final version of the vid, even if they have not a single clip in common. Sometimes you just can't make a great vid without making sucky one frist...

Hee! But I wanna get to the destination NOW! *iz impatient* Actually I want this done by next week, hence the little bit of frustration.

Though yeah.. not a complete loss actually. I took out all the clips that didn't fit my new theme and it don't look so bad. :)

*hugs* thanks hun. <33

I say the same thing about knitting projects when I've knit and re-knit the same six inches several times until I find a pattern/needle/yarn combo that matches the picture in my head.

I imagine that would be equally frustrating. So you design you own patterns? That would be pretty awesome I reckon.
