7.08 episode reaction
Nov. 12th, 2011 08:29 pmExcuse me a minute while I put away my note book filled with "I love Jared". *adds another heart* Oh and my dastardly plot to roofie Jared into loving me.
Ok. Done. Now. Where were we. *stares at the screen in wide eyed crazed excitement*
Oh yes. Episode reaction.
SAAAMMMM!!! They tied you up JUST FOR ME!!! Thank you show. \o/ I love you SO much (even though I'm thinking you might not love me so much anymore).
Look at that! They tied Sam to a bed! AND AND gagged him too! (I can tick that of my hopes for S7! \o/)
However:
Dear Darling Sam,
You know how you're really smart? You got a full ride to Stanford and you've been expertly trained my Dean and your dad? Well, you may have been a little more comfortable if you had spat out the gag. You know, used your tongue to push it out. Just saying.
Though, I get that you've been clocked on the head SO many times that you brain is mush now and may not have figured that out. So. I'll forgive you this time.
Yours,
Ignoring the bleeding obvious.
Also:
Dear Show,
Thank you so much for giving us another love letter. I am so impressed that after all this time you have a really good handle on what it means to be a fan of your show. And thank you so much for showing it to us because we may never have realised just how pathetic we really are.
Yours,
My eyes are wide open now.
Dear Becky,
You've read the Supernatural books. You know if you mess with Dean's little brother things aren't going to work out too well for you. There's quite a lot of other things I would like to point out but I think we'll leave it there.
Yours,
I don't even.
I've been trying to get another handle on the way they treated Becky in this. I've been looking for another angle - a positive take. But I keep coming back to just being damn confused.
It did strike me that perhaps we could take this as a shout out to Stephen King's Misery. A crazed #1 fan captures and drugs object of her adoration and incapacitates him. It's pretty damn creepy. Done right this could have (possibly) been a gripping psychological thriller. Might have even explored Becky's character some more and addressed the issue of obsession and madness in a way that respected the character. Instead. Well, instead we got what we got.
It reminded me of Yellow Fever (same writers btw) in that they missed a huge opportunity to do something interesting. In YF (top of my list as the worst ep ever) they caricatured Dean's fear in the same why they caricatured Becky.
Try as I might, I can't think of a reason why they decided to show such blatant disrespect for fans. Even if it's just "harmless fun" surely TPTB knew this wouldn't sit right with us.
*shrugs* It's disappointing but it didn't stop me from enjoying some of it. There were some laugh out loud moments mixed with some awwwws. Sure there were plenty of groans and O_O but let's focus on the positive yeah?
Exploding wedding cake! Now THAT made me giggle.
I liked the idea of Sam getting married. It was totally bizarre and gave us some new bromance moments. THE SEASON IS SO ABOUT THE BOYS BEING MARRIED! HOW MANY SHOUT OUTS NOW?!!? \o/
I was equal parts amused and worried about Sam strange behaviour. I love that we really did't know if it was something to do with his mental state or something was actually wrong. Inside I'm thinking NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! (love how stress free Sam looked. Jared did a good job of capturing that I think).
Though I do hate it when they make Sam say hurtful things to Dean when he's not entirely himself. They do that SO OFTEN. I get that it's part of his character but it makes me cringe. At least they fixed it by the end. I'm glad at least they got Sam to actually say he needs Dean to watch his back. I don't think Sam really gets it though. I know he meant well by saying you don't have to look after me any more. I hoping it's part of his character arc that he realises that a large part of Dean's well being is tied up in being needed by Sam AND that Sam needs to look after Dean also. It's works both ways. (I'm totally ok that he still has that to learn. As long as they give him a chance to do that). Though remembering the way they handled Sam in YF I'm thinking these two writers don't really know Sam and Dean that well. Which is stupid because they've written many episodes.
Sam in pain will always go down well with me so, yeah... those headaches as he was coming out of his drugged state? Thank you show. (see how I'm thanking you for the shallow stuff. Just be grateful there's that).
Sam's killer peen was referenced. :)
They go to Vegas annually. Like a holiday. (maybe they really did go to Vegas after Nightmare. Dean said they should. And now it's something they do regularly. 'cause they're married).
Sam takes himself off and camps out. Huh.
Garth. Yes. I did like him rather a lot. I loved how Dean working with him showed us just how WELL Sam and Dean work together. I love how damn matter of fact he was. None of the Winchester mystique about him. He got the job done though and didn't look completely stupid. (Unlike ::koff:: one character).
Crowley. Yes. Yes. I actually really liked Crowley in this one. I think after his run in with Dick he seems, Idk, different. Less cock sure or something. (I love the extreme close ups on his face also). The talk about Hell having integrity cracked me up. MAKES SENSE! Nothing to bargain with if you renege on a deal. That was a smooth scene actually.
I also loved Dean. *hugs* him. He was doing what he knows best. Looking out for Sam. I love that he was as confused as we were about the wedding. I adored his attempt to be supportive. The waffle iron did draw out a giggle. (not nice that it was later used on Sam's head /o\).
But really... It was that final look at the very end. The one that said "I don't know who to be if I'm not looking out for you. How do I even begin to look after myself?" Dean seems so deeply troubled at the moment. From the opening scene to the closing one. There's just something going on. I'm not sure if he's still headed for the much anticipated melt down or not. I assuming (maybe hoping?) so. Something needs to happen to get him out of his funk. I just hope to God they allow Sam to be there to pick up the pieces instead of be the cause it.
The boys seem to be in such a good place at the moment. The final scene full of smiles and jokes was lovely. Sam seemed genuinely grateful and I truly believe he felt like he was saying the right thing to Dean. I'm ok. Now it's your turn to be ok. Only Dean's not so sure how.
There's probably some deep meta here but that requires some more thought. I'd rather just remember those lovely smiles:
I know many hated this (and with good right). I wasn't left with the same level of hatred I did after Yellow Fever. There were too many bromance moments for it to be a complete loss for me.
I know this review is all over the damn place. It kinda messed with my head. That's my excuse anyway. :D

Date: 2011-11-12 02:07 pm (UTC)I just. It's probably best not to try and work this one out.
The final scene was a delight though so there was that. Hee.. yes. Twailer. :DDD

Date: 2011-11-12 02:43 pm (UTC)The thing that confuses me about Becky is that she never gets it. It's confused me since her first appearance, but it mattered less in the past because she wasn't in episodes for all that long. This was a whole Becky-centric episode and she went ... nowhere. At the end she was still gazing at Sam with big, sad eyes hoping he would say he liked being married to her.
And I just - Becky. It's all real. All those scary things. If this is what calls to you, shouldn't you be out on the road with a salt gun and an iron crowbar? You clearly enjoy working through cases, you're desperately searching for meaning in your life - why on earth is that manifesting as an attempt to rape Sam? Go be a screwed up hunter. At least that would be an interesting look at a fangirl.
It's one thing to put in a little joke about about a fan who knows all the tiny details even the author has forgotten, and who lusts after one brother to the point of disregarding the other ... but it's another to paint her as a sitcom character who has to reset to her initial state at the end of the story - particularly when she's doing things that are just wrong.
I don't know - these episodes aren't for me. I watch the meta ones through my fingers. :)
But - positives!
I liked the idea of Sam getting married. It was totally bizarre and gave us some new bromance moments. THE SEASON IS SO ABOUT THE BOYS BEING MARRIED! HOW MANY SHOUT OUTS NOW?!!? \o/
What cracks me up is that it's not just that they're married, it's that lately their relationship is so much healthier than everyone else's. Witches? Serial-killer leviathans? Scary psychic sisters? Sam-and-Becky-sittin'-in-a-tree? Pffft, no. If you want to see how to have a relationship with a minimal body count - look to the Winchester boys. :)
Crowley. Yes. Yes. I actually really liked Crowley in this one. I think after his run in with Dick he seems, Idk, different. Less cock sure or something.
I rather like Crowley - or at least he interests me. He takes such pride in being the reasonable man - the devil you know. He'll do terrible things but he knows where to stop, unlike this-or-that zealot over there. And I have a bit of sneaking sympathy for demons, because no one's ever going to speak up for their rights, so they do have to be out for themselves. That said, it's also a way to get people to commit to an 'acceptable' amount of evil. Apprehending a rogue crossroads demon sounds perfectly admirable - but what about the poor man he was possessing? But it becomes difficult for people to think of there being any other way.
I also loved Dean. *hugs* him. He was doing what he knows best. Looking out for Sam. I love that he was as confused as we were about the wedding. I adored his attempt to be supportive.
Dean's various 'this is not awesome, please return my brother right now' expressions were adorable. :)
I think, or at least hope, that they're aiming to put them in a position where solidarity can help Dean - they keep emphasising the importance of sticking together, of working things out, and you only have to look at them to see how much happier they are in each other's company. Learning to, well, lean on Sam instead of cling to him would be good for Dean.

OMG, SO MUCH WORD. YES. THIS. I keep thinking about the convention episode and how the fanboys, they learned the truth and they got active, they wanted to help. They talked about the books and the characters like they were inspirational to them, like they got something out of it. So compared to this episode, was like OHHHH, but fangirls, they find out Sam and Dean are real and they just want to roofie their favorite character to fuck them. Because why are girls fans for any other reason than because they want a boyfriend and can't get one. And that just...really enrages me. Fandom is primarily BUILT by fangirls and sure we have our shallow moments but good holy hell that is NOT all we are, not by a long shot. If anything I think it's totally warped sense of view on gender and fans, because fanboys *I* know are shallow as HELL about the stuff they fanboy, and are always telling me to stop looking for deep hidden meanings on things. It feels like either the writers have NO CLUE or it's literally a double middle finger in our direction. I'd rather they just not touch it and tell the SamnDean story I AM ACTUALLY HERE FOR. You know the one that fangirls spend all their time fleshing out over the past five years, because they're hardly doing their job??? *sigh*
no subject
Date: 2011-11-13 01:42 am (UTC)I really would rather believe they have NO CLUE rather than it be a "fuck you" to us. Thank GOD these eps are few and far between.
But as you say... why even go there?! Seriously?! I actually think they think they are doing us a favour. Or as I put above, writing as another "love letter" as it has been put in the past.
Damnit.

Date: 2011-11-13 01:34 am (UTC)(And I could totally have watched Becky the serious hunter. Anything to remove her inanity).
HA!! SamnDean's marriage is actually healthier than anyone else's!. SO TRUE! The focus really seems to be on showing us that they work now. Each episode has shown us a little of that. In the past it's been about how irrational and unhealthy it is. How they can be each others downfall. So it's great to see them coming out of that.
My respect for Crowley has increased 10 fold since that ep. (something good did come out of it!). I loved his reasoning.
And I have a bit of sneaking sympathy for demons, because no one's ever going to speak up for their rights,
Ha! True. :D At times I have felt sorry for demons. I remember Ruby (Katie's) talking about what it took to become a demon. I even have a soft spot for Meg. I'm very curious to see if somehow the demons and the Winchesters (maybe angels?) team up to defeat the leviathans. "Team Free Will" will take on a new meaning.
The demons seems to have respect for the Winchesters (and why wouldn't you!) so just maybe...
And I figure demon "meat suits" are no longer a concern for the show or the Winchesters. I actually though Dean didn't cut Guy's throat because he would kill the host. But that's no longer an issue it seems. (shame)
Learning to, well, lean on Sam instead of cling to him would be good for Dean.
Oh well put. <3333
Thanks again for your awesome thinky thoughts. <33

Date: 2011-11-12 03:01 pm (UTC)There was a lot handwaving to be done in this that I won't go into.
The saving graces for me were Jensen/Dean who looked even more amazing than usual (especially in his new threads) and Jared/Sam who was absolutely adorkable when he was under the influence (like he usually is when hes UTI) but I agree he could have spat that wrag out in like a second - that was really just very silly and cringeworthy for such a bad ass hunter. I think he could have figured a way out of those ropes to. If they were going for a Misery slant, it was way off.
The ending concerns me as well and I'll handwave it also. The joking and smiles saved the epi for me but I think there is still a melt down coming for Dean and Sam needs to be there to pick him up.

Date: 2011-11-13 02:01 am (UTC)it saddens me a little because we've been riding such a high in S7. There's been some truly wonderful episodes. A couple of weaker ones and then this. And this doesn't even come in as weak but rather very miscalculated.
But YES! Dean looked damn fine! And Sam's innocent/happy face was adorable. I just love how different Sam was when he was UTI. Jared pulled that off very well.
And yeah... that meltdown's gonna be pretty interesting ( I HOPE!) God, I hope they don't stuff that up. I am a bit worried now. That ep got past Sera so I'm worried what else they'll approve...
(I think I might spoil myself for next week. I need to know we have something positive to look forward to...)

Date: 2011-11-13 02:13 am (UTC)I gotta say, that's refreshing to hear. I think that's where I've been torn. I don't identify with her as a person I recognise in myself so I can see that it might not be about us directly but it's hard to not see her as being a stereotype of a SPN fangirl. I get why they used a stereotype rather than flesh out a real character (laziness I'm figuring) but they could have given her some nice or redeemable qualities.
If they brought her back they would have to be SO careful (not that they seem to really care how we react to her) - I'd love to see a complete turn around. A lesson learned maybe. But...nah, I'm thinking now she'd have to be a completely different character.

Date: 2011-11-12 04:37 pm (UTC)Try as I might, I can't think of a reason why they decided to show such blatant disrespect for fans. Even if it's just "harmless fun" surely TPTB knew this wouldn't sit right with us.
*shrugs* It's disappointing but it didn't stop me from enjoying some of it.
TPTB have been doing this for YEARS. I swear, I've gotten to the point where when I know an ep is going to have elements of meta, I anticipate the hits. We got our first taste with Monster at the End of This Book and it hasn't stopped. I don't expect it to.
My attitude at this point is "I get it, you hate me and think I'm a moron. Screw you right back. I'm here for the story of Sam and Dean. And the irony of you WRITING that very story and then making fun of me for liking it is not lost on me, jerks."
Wow. That got ranty. Sorry!
And your second point is the reason I keep watching. For as awful as this was. And oh my stars, there was a metric ton of awful in this one, the Sam and Dean parts were so amazing.
God, Sam's smile in that pic takes my breath away. They're teasing each other and using stupid voices and grinning all over the place and...sigh...my heart.
TPTB can think I'm Becky and make fun of me all they want, they CANNOT take that Sam and Dean feeling away from me. And now I'm singing the Firefly theme...*is a dork*

Date: 2011-11-12 06:08 pm (UTC)holy crap, yes! that's exactly what the user name references! awesome catch!
the meta really does knock the show out of the sam and dean story, doesn't it? that's why i try to actively FIND the sam and dean story within all that crap. it's really the only way i can keep watching the show.
and yes, there is an element of "look how clever we are" with the fan-service and meta that gets TERRIBLY old in these eps. i much prefer the almost throw-away lines like the Gilmore Girls reference in Hollywood Babylon and the House of Wax comment in Fallen Idols (to name just two) to ENTIRE EPISODES that take up so much time on this concept.
and the rants continue! :)

Date: 2011-11-13 02:55 am (UTC)I actively FEEL, as I'm watching, that the writers went through fan reactions and picked out stuff fans wanted to see and just wrote something to include it, to be like "hey, look at us - we listen to you!"
YES! It's the feeling that they think they are so clever. To have us look at ourselves through their meta eps. I just don't get WHY. Surely they can't think we all like this. But maybe some do (?) I have seen a couple "That ep was awesome".. so maybe it's only a small amount of us.
*shrugs*
Hmmm... I wonder if we could create a fan petition to ask them to stop representing us.
(looks like I did some ranting of my own *g*)

\o/ We shall overcome! :DD

Date: 2011-11-12 05:50 pm (UTC)To me it had a lot of strong points with underlying meanings. The big one being this whole episode was a show that Sam didn't need Dean to take care of him anymore or at least Dean thinks this. Sam's a grown up, and I think this episode really hit home for Dean that hey Sam could be married (very VERY unlikely) or go off and do things without him because he isn't that 14 year old boy getting beat up by bullies and needed his big brother to save him or protect him. Dean's at a loss on what to do, who the hell is he without taking care of Sam? I think it'll be a great experience for Dean to reevaluate himself and take into account his problems and emotions.
And I think with Becky, at least I think, they were trying to show that same sorta obsessiveness/craziness that all fangirls have just amped up to the extreme to make her more comedic.
She had a lot of strong suits in the episode though that rang true, at least for me. Feeling lonely or weird in school with family and friends until you hop online and a whole world welcomes you with open arms.
She's so funny cause in respect she IS a lot like a average fangirl on here they just decided in this episode to really show how dire and dangerous blurring lines with fantasy and reality can be, at least in my opinion.

Date: 2011-11-13 03:08 am (UTC)Yay! It's nice to hear someone did. I'm struggling to find anyone on my flist who actually liked it. :)
I think the most interesting part of the episode was Dean realising that Sam doesn't need looking after any more. Though weirdly, he actually DID need looking after because he was being roofied. Though I think they made the distinction between watching each other's backs and taking care of them. They seemed to be saying that Sam is ok now, so now it's Dean's turn to be ok.
they were trying to show that same sorta obsessiveness/craziness that all fangirls have just amped up to the extreme to make her more comedic.
Yeah. I gotta think they were trying for comedy. It fell completely flat for me. Instead of being funny she ended up being a mockery of the lonely fangirl.
I would LOVE for her to have been taken seriously. If she hadn't have been a caricature (in the attempt for comedy) she could have been used to really look at those issues of loneliness and acceptance. It would have been great to see her empowered. There was potential because she has the makings of a good hunter.
(and how interesting that might have been. Fangirl turn real hunter *g*)
I really like your take on it and it's made me feel a little better about it. Mostly I think I just wish they'd leave us out of it. Meta eps don't sit well with me at the best of times.

Date: 2011-11-12 09:14 pm (UTC)RIGHT? It totally is. I think, why on EARTH did they think this idea was okay? Then I think, they probably thought the whole idea of Dean feeling sad and angry and jealous over Sam getting married and not needing him was reason enough.
The thing is, they TOTALLY could have done this, and had it just be some RANDOM WICCA CHICK. Why did it have to be Becky?
All bad episodes get compared to the Yellow Fever standard of badness for me. On one hand, bro smiles. Very redeeming where YF just had BAD AWFUL FEELINGS. On the other hand YF didn't go so far as telling SPN fangirls they're all loser wannabe rapists. So it's easier for me to just forget the bad stuff happened, it was worthless to me. And embrace the good stuff. aka the last 50 seconds. (Dean's jealousy/anger/confusion reactions in the beginning might be a tad redeemable too with some time just because if I forget it was Becky, it was pretty hysterical, and right in line with this season all about Dean's repeating horrors and nightmares. The more it keeps happening, the more I'm convinced they're working up to doing something about resolving it this season, and that does make me happy.)

Date: 2011-11-13 03:26 am (UTC)I can just imagine it starting with the idea of having one of them actually getting married. (I wonder if they've made a conscious decision to compare their relationship to a marriage? I would like to think it's been deliberate). And then it must have snowballed. I wonder why it wasn't halted when someone said... "I know, we could use Becky. Let's make her a total psycho and idiot. I'm sure the fans would love another shout out to themselves".
Sera for shame. Shouldn't have made it past you.
I've also wondered why they didn't use a total stranger. Sam could have come back with anyone and we would still have had the mystery.
YF is my benchmark too. I can remember being actively cross during that episode (the devil you know was another one), this one it wasn't really until the end I thought.. WTF? I think because I was merrily going along thinking that there was going to be some POINT to what Becky was doing. That there was going to be the fabulous reveal. But alas. :(
I'm pretty damn sure they're building up to something with Dean. I just hope to God they handle it well.

Date: 2011-11-13 04:02 am (UTC)I was thrown out of the episode real quick when within 3 minutes of it starting I was cringing and wincing thinking of what Jared thought of it when he first read the script. I can't see either of the Js being incredibly excited about this script and that's just wrong wasting such talented acting chops and all that pretty with a fairly inane storyline like this...when they've been doing soooo well this season. *sigh*
But I watched and I laughed and I engaged in second hand squick on behalf of the boys and will be chalking this one up to the moving on nothing to see here motto.
I look forward to some of our brilliant fandom authors running with the annual Vegas visits or even some hippy enforced camping trips in which Sam insists Dean learns to find his centre again by being at one with nature. The potential there is already bringing a smile to my face.

Date: 2011-11-13 08:24 am (UTC)I just wish they'd leave the SPN books and their look at fandom alone. There's so many other good stories to be had. Or, if they do they need to be a little more clever than this.
Hee... I actually loved Jared's faces when he was tied up. He looked genuinely pained. Maybe he was channeling his feelings about the ep during that scene.
We definitely need Vegas fics with camping boys. Hopefully there will be some fandom fixes for this one. ;D

Date: 2011-11-13 08:33 am (UTC)I also loved Crowly and and smirked at the "integrity of hell". Remember Dean once saying: Demon's I get, people are crazy?
I only wish they would have made Becky look less 'crazy'. She was a walking stereotype with no ...I dont know.. reality to her. Maybe it's that writer that he thinks stupid = funny.
I'm not even sure it was a shoutout to fans as such. Just a convienient character to use for an idea. (The writer is lucky we fangirls don't use waffle irons on rather sexist and thoughtless writers... :P )
But you as you pointed out there were some enjoyable moments in this. I'll just keep those in memory. :)
