Podfic recs!
Dec. 7th, 2011 08:31 pmI've decided this is a good way for me to remember the podfics I've loved. For bizarrely anal reasons I delete the fics once I've listened to them so this is a good way for me to find them again if I need to. (though seriously, I need to find a good bookmarking site).
If it means you get to find a podifc you haven't listened to then double bonus. And if I can convince you that podfics are the best thing EVER then triple bonus!
Podfic: American Myth (Sam/Dean R)

If there's anything better than a
candle_beck fic it's listening to her read her own fic. Her voice is PERFECT. It amazes me how well the timbre of her voice matches the feel of her fic. I CAN'T EVEN! <333
But this fic. Man. It's up there as one of my fav wincest fics ever. It's raw and gorgeous and it even has some hurt!Sam. (finding that in a podfic is rare at the best of times *g*). Do your self a favour. Take a listen!
Podfic: Man's Best Friend (J2, NC17)

I don't need to mention how well it's read because it's Juice and her reputation precedes her. :D
This story is so DELIGHTFUL! I figure with the gazillionty comments it's received you might already know that. :) If not... go read or listen. Jensen as a cute little dog is too adorable for words. And Jared is totally adorable also.
Podfic: The Jared Padalecki Untitled Project (J2, R)

At times this fic is hard because the boys were so at odds with each other. But it's addictive because you HAVE to know it all works out. I was so engaged when I was listening to this fic. I have to rec it for that alone. :) (the pauses between the chapters takes a little getting used to because they happen in the middle of sentences. But it's worth getting used to).
Podfic: Suburban Cape Cod Blues or You Can Find Anything at Walmart (J2 NC17)

A sweet J2 story, nicely read by
exmanhater. (ALL her fics are wonderfully read). I liked the way the boys find each other. There's something about Jared being a feminist lit professor (who's totally comfortable about his sexuality) and Jensen being a country singer (who is totally NOT), that I found appealing. :)
Also, if you want to give podfics a go but not sure how to go about it, here's some easy steps. (well, the way I go about it *g*)
1. Have an iPod or mp3 player or other listening device..
2. Search for podfics. This is the best site for doing so: Audiofic. You can search by fandom, relationship, author, reader etc. There's a link to the fic so you can check it out before you download it. Other places to check out are:
amplificathon (multi-fandom podfic) (Amplification at DW)
spn_gen_podfics
podslash
podfic_central
Also check out
pod_aware. A community designed to increase awareness of podfics.
3. Click the download link.
4. Copy the download onto your listen device. It's usually a click and drag or syncing up your iPod to iTunes.
5. LISTEN! Anytime. Anywhere. \o/
6. Leave feedback.
yourlibrarian lists the top 5 reasons for listening to podfics. I AGREE!
Feel free to share any you've loved with me. I'm running out! (though I noticed a new J2 posted today so that's on my list. ;D)

Date: 2011-12-07 12:43 pm (UTC)Another reason I love podfic, is that it gives me another interpretation of the text other than my own. We all read in certain ways, skimming some parts, lingering on others, seeing characters a certain way. And podfics give e a new look at a story, and so often i come away with something new appreciate about it. If I love a fic, I will search out the pdofic, and vice versa.
The Jared Padalecki Untitled Project is one of my favourite stories ever and I was so pleased that the podfic really did it justice. I have listened to it more times than I will admit!

Date: 2011-12-07 12:53 pm (UTC)It amazes me that when I go to leave feedback on a fic I find that it was written years ago. They are fics that I may never have found if it wasn't for podifcs.
And yes about interpretation. I actually think I pick up more when listening to a fic. I can often skim when reading but if the reader is engaging I hang on every word.
And re the JPUP... I was SO concerned about how this fic was going to work out I actually had to take a sneak peek at the fic to make sure it was going to be ok. /o\ Amazing story. Terrific characterisations.

Date: 2011-12-07 01:50 pm (UTC)I don't even know what to do with the information that you delete podfics after listening to them! Lol one of those things where I'm brought up hard against the realization that people really do things differently :D I tend to listen to good fics many times in a single day if they're short, or several times in a couple days if they're longer, and will often go back to them over and over and over. Also, I never delete anything, because I am a total pack rat. Lol my poor hard drive!

Date: 2011-12-07 02:08 pm (UTC)I am always interested to know what other people do.
For me saving the Dl clutters my ipod so I have to delete them. I know... ANAL! I like to only have the ones that I haven't listened to on there.
But I wonder if I'm doing things wrong. I'd like to keep the dl on iTunes and not have them appear on my iPod. Even when I check it NOT to appear it does. ( must explore that more).
I have only listened to the same podfic twice. One by accident (dl'd not realising I'd listened to it but kept on listening because I LOVE it (must rec that sometime) and the other because I totally adored it).
Now that I'm running out podfics I'll probably have to re-listen to the ones I love. :)

Date: 2011-12-07 05:26 pm (UTC)Ad the cool thing about podfic for me is that I explore new fandoms that way. Especially AUs often work nicely with little to no source text knowledge...

Date: 2011-12-08 09:53 am (UTC)I have to admit I haven't ventured into other fandoms yet. I think I will certainly give them a go as I start to run short of fics to listen to. :)

Date: 2011-12-10 11:55 am (UTC)I actually like listening to slash romance (strangely, because I hardly ever read it..). I love good J2 fics, so good m/m slash in other fandoms would what I'd head for.
Thanks.<33

Date: 2011-12-07 05:35 pm (UTC)I don't think I've heard the last story yet so thanks for the rec! Also, while I know a lot of people have been happy with Pinboard for bookmarking, I understand there is a new fannish project underway to create a fan-centered bookmarking site, so that'll be something to keep an eye on next year.
I'm like you, I tend to delete all the fics I read and the podfics I listen to once they're done. I've saved a handful but as they pile up I'd probably need a separate hard drive for them all if I saved them! (Plus the vids I keep take up a lot of space...)

Date: 2011-12-08 09:43 am (UTC)Thanks for your suggestion. I'll add the link.
The project for a fan-centered bookmarking site sounds very exciting. I'll certainly keep an eye out. I was going to try Delicious and then it changed. I was also going to check out Pinboard, but I might wait to see what happens with the fan one.
Thanks! :)

Date: 2011-12-07 11:43 pm (UTC)May I recommend to you the lovely reading of pennyplainknits? She reads in a bunch of fandoms, but I really enjoyed After the Tone and Counting the Steps to the Door of Your Heart, which are both J2. The first has a post-Show AU of Jensen's new life that I love more than the actual relationship stuff in it, and the second made me laugh out loud.

Thanks so much for those recs and for the links below. I will be sure to check them out.

Date: 2011-12-11 09:40 pm (UTC)I have the same love of long stories in podfic, though I've found that the 15-30 minute recordings juice does can be good for falling asleep to, so that it doesn't continue playing a long piece after I fall asleep and therefore drain my battery for no reason.

Date: 2011-12-12 01:06 pm (UTC)Most of my listening is when I'm in the car or walking the dog. I stop it after about 15mins or so and then it makes me want to listen to more to the drive or the dog exercise isn't such a chore.
Actually I listened to a delightful 5 min fic on the way to work. It made me laugh out loud and set me in a good mood for the day. (the Jared as a unicorn and Jensen as a dolphin one).
I once had a fic playing when I went to bed and feel asleep listening to it, so I rarely listen to them going to bed now. Though I can see that the short ones would be great for listening just before bed.
