Is alright all right?
Jan. 5th, 2012 05:41 amWhen I Google the word "alright" I find that it's not considered acceptable English. The word doesn't sit too well with me when I read it and yet it seems to be acceptable and used a lot. Perhaps if it's used in the context of "it's ok" rather than "everything is right", then it's acceptable?? Is it something a beta should pick up when proof reading?
*head scratch*
And (whilst I'm on word usage)... why do I cringe when I see the word "cum" as opposed to "come"? "Cum" just doesn't look right. Is it? Does it matter? Hmmm... probably not. If the porn is hot enough a word shouldn't matter. But I tend to turn away more often when I see that word used for some reason.
(Yay, seeing Sherlock Holmes today. Hope it's good!)

Date: 2012-01-05 02:26 pm (UTC)"Alright" may be used a lot, but just because a lot of people spell it wrong . . . doesn't make it right. And it's certainly not "acceptable," not in my neck of the woods. Hell, "alright" is not even considered a real WORD in my neck of the woods. :/
Is it something a beta should pick up when proof reading?
Yes. At the very least, a beta should know how to spell. ;) Then again, as a beta, I've called people out on that particular usage and they then go and use it anyway, so . . . *shrug*

I'm certainly with you there. You're right about a single word not mattering if the porn is hot enough, but to me, "come" is a happy thing while "cum" is a sleazy, skeevy, negative-connotation spelling that tends to throw me right out of the scene. That usage makes me itch.
