OMFG!!
Ok. So I figure they'll be a mixed bag of fan reactions to this one (I'm sure that touched on a few issues that may upset some) but I really REALLY enjoyed it!
Talk about angst overload. Jeezeee SPN. How many times can you tear my heart out and stomp on it?!
OH BOYS!!! That final scene. :((((( Whaaaaaaaaaaaa "Don't get killed". *SNIFF*
I adored ADORED the camera work and the editing!!! \o/ The intercutting between Dean having sex and the guy being chopped up was amazing. As was the scene with Dean and Lydia. All those fabulous close ups on the eyes and lips... GUH!! Great directorial debut from Jerry Wanek.
The ep was really nicely paced. I was on the edge of my seat pretty much all of the time.
SAMMY IS SO WORRIED ABOUT HIS BIG BROTHER. Awwwwww All those little looks of concern, frustration, and worry. Dean's barely coping. Sam's barely coping.
HOW DO THEY GET UP IN THE MORNING!?!
I really liked the turn about. Sam having to kill Emma. The call back to Dean killing Amy. Loved the continuity and that that one moment, from so many eps ago, still holds so much importance.
GHOST!BOBBY \o/ COME ON... is that canon now??? He's looking out for them beyond the grave. He is isn't he?! *NODS*
DEAN WAS A DADDY. My god. Just add another level of angst why don't ya Show.
They really are seeing how far they can push Dean before he completely snaps. I have no idea what Dean snapping would actually look like though. We've seen it before - after John died. A death wish. Maybe, drinking until he can't move? Carelessness to the point of getting himself killed? (which, nah...there were references to him staying around for Sam. I think Dean WILL try and not get killed for Sam's sake). *shrugs* I don't know. I have to say I prefer Dean when he's not so morose and downbeat but I get that it's part of his character journey this season so I'm curious to see where they take it).
Something I can never figure though. Why on earth do the boys leave the window open? Surely they know things can get them through an open window. Sam must remember being taken in Long Distance Call. (I know... adds to the tension and all that. Well, it did for me).
*yikes* gotta dash. Busy weekend is god damn busy! Glad I was able to squeeze that in. Another awesome ep.
Whatcha think? I have no idea what the reaction has been/will be to this one. Don't worry about harshing my squee. I'm cool with that. Though feel free to squeee along with me. :DDD

Date: 2012-02-04 12:05 pm (UTC)Yes. The charactisations were really well played. In an episode like this you can see how comfortable the Js are with their characters. Sam was both annoying little brother and awesome little brother rolled into one. Dean was trying to be everything he used to be (picking up women) and then coping with that back firing in his face.
OH BOYS! (that about sums it up for me *g*)

And yay, Ghost!Bobby !!! So cool. Seems he did drink that beer from the other ep after all. :D
And that professor cracked me up. He was so funny and well... annoying. ;D
THe call back to Amy was great. And the whole thing so heartbreaking. *hugs both Sam and Dean*
\o/ Wonderful episode! I thoroughly enjoyed it. And naked Dean... ♥♥♥ :D

Oh yes! The professor was fantastic! (I knew I forgot to mention all the great bits).
It was all so fantastic! Damn this show!!
But not really.. :DD

And is it Bobby or some form of Castiel messing with their stuff?

Date: 2012-02-04 02:01 pm (UTC)Wasn't that awesome!? SOOO much good stuff! Those boys... *happy sigh*
loved Sam's barely supressed enjoyment of horn-dog Dean getting dumped.
Oh yes! Sam being such an annoying little bro was sooooo cute.
Ooooh. I hadn't thought about it being Castiel. I'm hoping it's Bobby, but it could be Cas I suppose. Ooooh.... that might be a nice twist....
And SHIRTLESS DEAN! About damn time! :DD

Date: 2012-02-04 02:24 pm (UTC)Oh man! I LOVE that expression. He said that? That's cool. It did feel exactly like that. A good, solid ep.
The continuity this season has been fabulous. I love that they refer to other things that have happened. The importance of the Amy killing has taken me by surprise. I remember blogging (or answering a comment) that we will probably never hear about that moment again. I was so wrong! It's been such an important theme.
I went into this ep thinking it was going to be "meh" (having seen a couple of comments, not from being spoiled), but ended up being pleasantly surprised.
ghost!Bobby....\o/

(which, nah...there were references to him staying around for Sam. I think Dean WILL try and not get killed for Sam's sake).
I think that's kind of the trouble: Dean's already doing all this for Sam's sake. If not for Sam, he'd just throw in the towel and give up. And they can both see that it isn't working. So Sam begs Dean not to get himself killed, and what can he say? This is him trying not to die. The crash is happening right now, just in slow motion because he's trying to stop it and can't. So something is going to have push him to change tack. But what, I don't know. :)

Date: 2012-02-04 02:38 pm (UTC)I think Dean would totally throw in the towel if it wasn't for Sam and the revenge for Bobby's death. There really isn't anything else. Two things that keep him going. I love that Sam recognises this and that his words would probably help Dean.
I also think Sam really, REALLY needs Dean to be ok so that he is ok. It's so messy and tangled. I loved that we saw a little of Sam's vulnerability. Without Dean HE would fall apart.
Talk about co-dependent. They seriously would not cope without the other. (JOY!)
I love that this is Dean crashing... slowly. Something will need to stop his free fall. The only thing I can think of is either... Sam, Cas or Bobby (the latter two most probably...)

Yes, I think Sam has decided that he can handle anything as long as the universe will let him keep Dean. Which would be fine, if Dean wasn't convinced that he's destined to lose everything, including Sam, and is thus suicidal. They really need something to happen to stop them wobbling like this, because they could find enough support in each other if they weren't both convinced that the other one is going to die on him any minute now.
And yes - I think some better closure on Bobby and Castiel would probably help them a lot. Sam actually collapsing would probably help Dean in the very short term, because he can always pull himself together for Sam's sake, but they need something more permanent than that. It's a pity Dean couldn't see Sam's perspective in The Man Who Knew Too Much. I know he no longer doubts Sam's affection for him, but seeing that I-go-nowhere-without-my-brother attitude first-hand might make him seem more solid.

And in their line of work it is so very possible.

Date: 2012-02-04 09:22 pm (UTC)I really enjoyed this for the most part, but quite honestly the main plot about the Amazon women? I kind of didn't understand that at all! Why the hands and feet? (*cough* - more obvious parts if you ask me...) If they've been doing this every 2 years with every member of the group of child bearing age, why isn't the planet overrun with Amazon women tossing guys down the stairs? (whimper - I REALLY liked that bit hee) Why hasn't this floated across the Winchester's scrutiny before - every 2 years a string of mutilated corpses with symbols carved into flesh and no one has connected them at all - ever?
Hmmm...no matter, I had plenty of brotherly banter and teasing and angsting and worrying and saving and threatening and embarrassing sex education topics and YES! I'm just so overjoyed they talk to one another, they check up on one another, they care about one another - heck they can drive a semi through the whole plot thing for all I care!
But I did notice it was another episode with weird time lines and ghostly goings on, I'm adding those to the list of strange things this season.
no subject
Date: 2012-02-05 01:56 am (UTC)It definitely looks very similar to tall tales. I would say those cupboards more definitely. (hee...I was think that while I was watching...). The room was pretty cool.
And yeah... what the hell was with the Amazon MotW? A rather strange one. And the regular murders should have definitely raised some flags with the boys. *shrug*
But YAY for the bromance. At least we have it in bucket loads this season. Well, at least they are talking and being (mostly) honest with each other. AND they have each others' back.
I'm thinking the strange goings on are Bobby. It's been suggested that it's Cas, but idk. We'll have to see I suppose.

Date: 2012-02-04 10:43 pm (UTC)HOW DO THEY GET UP IN THE MORNING!?!
AHHHH! I know! I was worried my reaction would be the lone positive one, given the subject. I was totally surprised by it myself. But recipe for making me like an ep: Excenuate the gloom and doom of the Winchesters and throw in some Sam worried about Dean FOR Dean. And I am YOURS.
I just love how the show went, yea sure we'll do the whole corny trope of main character finds out he has a kid. Only because it's SPN, the news is like a DEATH SENTENCE. And is basically only an impetus for Sam to declare his love to Dean again. Only SPN. I love it. XD
I am also wondering where Dean's rubberband snap is going to be. But it almost feels like the whole season is working towards it, which would make the end of the season 20-22/23, the most likely place for it, eh? I kinda keep forgetting we have a whole extra episode this year. I know so fans are yelling where is the plot? But imo, there's been too many years where it's been all plot and not enough character/relationship dealings. This year, it's what it's all about. I'd actually rather see the Leviathans become a two season thing, so the focal point to deal with at the end of the season is Dean dealing and not spent on Leviathan defeating. Plus they're too ripe a monster creation to just go, okay, let's kill them all now, you know?

Date: 2012-02-05 02:02 am (UTC)Ha! INDEED!
The snap - assuming that's what we're leading up to - will be very interesting. It certainly feels like we are heading toward something.
And some are saying there's n plot? Like an overall arc? I'm actually liking that we are getting to see them actually have to confront and deal with how crappy their lives are. SO much has happened to them. It's great to see the Show taking stock of that.
If they blow of the leviathans in one ep it would be fairly disappointing. I keep hearing "this is their most challenging monster yet" (from the Show)...so their downfall is going to have to be pretty major I suspect.
*rubs hands* well see. We're just over half way through, so lots more to come...\o/

Date: 2012-02-05 09:23 am (UTC)As for the editing work - I really don't know for sure, but it seems like there's a couple of new editors in season 7. I like the "then" sequences in the beginning of the episodes and how they are edited, like it much much more this way, because hey - they even added some visual effects!
And yes, the scene of Dean having sex and that guy being killed was pretty cool :P
I can second pretty much everything you said :D AND YAY BOBBY! \o/ I think he is a ghost, otherwise why they ended 710 on the words "What will you choose, Bobby Singer?" and then started the ep with that "three weeks later" montage? I kind of didn't get it then, but I guess now I do and I'm all for Bobby being a ghost - better than him being dead, right? He loved his idjits so much that he couldn't leave them AWWWW BOBBY FAMILY DOESN'T END WITH BLOOD INDEED ♥
They really are seeing how far they can push Dean before he completely snaps.
I think he will. Rather sooner than later :\
Something I can never figure though. Why on earth do the boys leave the window open? Surely they know things can get them through an open window. Sam must remember being taken in Long Distance Call. (I know... adds to the tension and all that. Well, it did for me).
Maybe it was just stuffy in the room? lol I KNOW THE SMARTEST COMMENT EVER lol

Date: 2012-02-09 02:38 am (UTC)I agree with pretty much everything that's already been said in the comments, but have one additional concern about Dean's imminent collapse: he has an amazing ability to take on guilt for things he's not responsible for, as seen in early Season 2, after Ellen and Jo died, etc. They're all adults who made their choices, however that isn't how Dean sees it.
The moment when Dean's pointing a gun at Emma and she says that she "wouldn't even be here if it weren't for [Dean]." Dean already told her he's really not a good man, which he's believed for some time now, but I can see him deciding that he's actively letting evil loose now, that him being alive actually makes the world worse, and just not be able to function effectively as a hunter anymore. To let something hurt him bad enough to die, even if it's not a conscious decision, since I don't think he'd intentionally leave Sam.
no subject
Date: 2012-02-09 07:12 am (UTC)And YES. What a good point. Dean really, really does not rate himself. And it's so interesting because if any one was going to feel that they were "bad" it would be Sam. Sam could so easily take on that level of guilt (considering his demon blood etc.) But instead it's Dean. I wonder if it's because Sam has always had Dean to make him feel worthwhile, whereas Dean has mostly had to rely on himself. Sure, Sam CAN make Dean feel those things but it's not always been plain sailing.
I wonder what could possibly make Dean feel worthy of living. He's saved so many people - including Sam. It's probably going to take more than that. No quick fix I should think. I know Dean wouldn't "leave" Sam as such, but if he continues to have no self worth it's going to get harder to stay safe. (maybe)
Oooh, very thinky. Thanks for that.
