as I do...

makeup artists are rather unsung - are they not? I mean... these guys/gals are artists like actors and set designers etc, so I'm considering a (spn) makeup artist appreciation post. (yeah I know... too much time on my hands.../o\) Possibly not enthralling viewing but these guys deserve some lovin'!

So, if you can rec me some makeup highlights over the last 7 years I'd appreciate it (and no I'm not talking about the time SamnDean have made up... sheesh...). Off the top of my head I'm thinking Dean after Lucifer!Sam beat him to a pulp in Swan Song. Even Sam in Born Again Idenity. Maybe some of the monsters...? I think Dean's transformation in Skin has to be up there... that was pretty amazing.

In other news... I ordered the Vote Winchester & Winchester T shirt. I ordered large cause I wanted it nice and baggy. It arrived today and seriously? That's a large? I would hate to see medium or small. I reckon it would be about an Aus size 8. I guess returning it isn't possible. Looks like it might be an incentive to start jogging again...

Dean in Faith? Lucifer's falling about?

Also- i remember reading somewhere, about how much their job has changed since the introduction of high def/blu-ray becasue we can see every pore, they ened to use diff products and techniques. Much lighter obv.

Oh yes... Lu's skin falling off. That was very cool.

I imagine it would be harder these days. It always amazes me how much cut lips and bruises look so damn real. And on a show like this their skills would be put to the test that's for sure.

Thanks for the suggestions.

sometimes its the little things - like when Dean or Sam have scrapped knuckles - even the scar on Sam's hand....

ohh and their tattoos!

It's the scar that got me thinking about this. It looks so damn real!

And OF COURSE the TATS! And the hand print.... :)

What a great idea. I got hooked into Syfy's Face Off last year and now have a higher appreciation of their work. Especially when its subtle. I don't know about the other SPN make-up artists (mainly because I haven't looked) but I came across Tamar Ouziel page. I love the close ups the small cuts/bruises - it just impresses me more than some of the more obvious and elaborate fx makeup. It also means you really can't go wrong as every episode has awesome makeup, and fx ingenuity ;)

Oh that link to Tamar's page is simply wonderful!! Thank you.

And that TV show looks very cool.

I think it's the subtle work that I love best also.

I think I'll look up the other makeup artists and see what I can find out them. :))

Thanks <3

I was impressed with the spidery black vein work they did on Castiel as he went all Leviathan. Probably not the most sophisticated effect they've ever had to do, but combined with the shuffling, lopsided gait Misha did, it was truly creepy.

And yes, Dean in Faith. All pale and dark eyed. And the consistency of Sam's slowly healing facial injuries in the first 2-3 episodes of S2.

From: [identity profile] raloria.livejournal.com
The black veins on Cas would've been CGI and not makeup artists at work. Much in the same way that demons showing their eye color are not always practical contacts worn by the actors. ;)

Okay, I wasn't sure. Still looked very cool, though.

I loved the vein work in that ep. I'd say it was CGi but I also wonder if there was any makeup involved.

I did love the slow healing wounds of the boys post the car crash. :))

Ohh and that icon is lovely....

Thanks hun.

I can tell you from personal experience that makeup artists are extremely talented. Working on an independent film I got to watch one of these talented folks up close as he created bloody bullet holes and busted up faces to our actors. By the time he was done it looked creepily real.

I'd suggest the car crash aftermath in Devil's Trap and the following eps 2x01 and 2x02. There's so many more but those jumped to mind right away.

From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
Oh yes... they most truly are. I remember doing a theatre makeup course once and I was completely hopeless at it! It's most definitely takes some talent.

And I agree - the car crash aftermath was very impressive. Thank you. I'll make sure to include that. :)

"curious about size thing"??? Dare I ask what "size" you are referring to my dear?! ;DD

I am sure there will be some pics I can dig up! :)

The shapeshifter peeling his skin off was probably more special effects than makeup. Though they do work closely together and overlap sometimes.

I did wonder... it doesn't particularly look like CGI though...maybe it is a bit of both. I was looking at that bit where his teeth fall out...(ughh), and I have no idea how they created that...

Special effects aren't just cgi. There's make-up effects, explosions, squibs, mechanical effects-- all kinds of things. In fact there's a movie about a sfx guy-- called F/X, ironically enough-- that's actually pretty good. ;)

From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
Oh yes...very true. I did wonder though if CGi as involved, but looking at it I'd say not. Maybe a model with time lapse perhaps...

And I know that film! I remember watching it years ago. It IS pretty good - even with Bryan Brown in it...;)

Because I am a failure as a fan, can't name eps....but - remember the injury to centre of Dean's forehead when he shot Yellow Eyes? The injury diminished gradually over next couple of eps. I was really impressed with continuity of make-up. (I think I'm remembering eps. correctly.)

I've been especially impressed when Sam has been at rock bottom. His make-up during scene's in Bobby's safe room, esp. with Mary, for one. And the drunk cross-roads demon confrontation, and when Ruby and her hench-men attacked him in his room. The artists successfully make Sam look totally destroyed and worn down, sickly. Maybe it's the planes and sharp angles of his face which combine with lighting and make-up to sell it so well. Jared's seems to up the anty considerably when they give him some meaty scenes to act.

From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
Oh yes... that was All Hell Breaks Loose. Though I think the head injury is the one from the car crash. That took a couple of episodes to disappear.

And YES... they do a great job of making the boys look suitably worn out. Which makes me think of Hell Sam... and Dean in hell...

There's going to be so much to choose from.

(and hey you... I'm coming to Sydney. Week after next...Love to catch up if we can. Maybe actually do some of those tequila shots...;D)

Sam and Dean's bleeding eyes in "Bloody Mary"? Not fancy effects, but still. There were tubes on the guys' faces, and we didn't see them.

Gordon Walker's creepy vampire eyes in "Fresh Blood"?

Oh wow... there were tubes? I didn't know that. Impressive!

And yes... Gordon Walker we well impressive during that episode. I'll investigate that one.

thank's hun!

I always thought the deep scratches on their faces from Shadow were well done and looked very real...even though the magic CW ointment healed them overnight! I remember watching the next epi and expecting them to have some healing marks but poof, nothing ;p

That sux about your T shirt and I've learned to order larger sizes because they don't size them right. I agree though, it's incentive to get into that shirt one way or another so go for it!

Date: 2012-06-29 12:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
Oh yes... the scars from Shadow sprang to my mind as well. I will definitely include those. (I remember the outcry when they suddenly disappeared. I wonder if that's why the car accident ones took a few eps to heal..?)

Yeah... disappointing re T-shirt. Though I think I'd have to become my 10 year old self to actually fit into it. I usually order a medium but thought I'd be clever and get a size up "just in case"... going by that sizing I'd next an XXXXL to get the baggy feel I was after.../o\

Oh well... it can go into my SPN memorabilia. :))

Yes to Sam in Born Again Identity.

And I was thinking the djinn in What Is and What Should Never Be. That was all over and must have taken ages.

From: [identity profile] callistosh65.livejournal.com
Wasn't there a story somewhere ( from Kripke, maybe?) that the guy who played the djinn had to go out and catch the bus, do grocery shopping, etc, like that for the couple of days he was filming because it was so time consuming to put on him.

Date: 2012-06-29 01:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
Oh yes yes... the dijnn.... that would have taken some work. It also looked awesome!

Ooh, what about Sam and Dean's makeup in 'It's a terrible life'? They looked so much more prettier than usual or rather so much more made up than usual. And if memory serves me right, with what looked like such lovely pink lipstick.

It's not a big deal at all, but remember Sam's teacher from 4x13? I think the make-up crew did AN AMAZING job of making him look a legit decade older during the end segment. It looked so authentic.

Also in The Real Ghostbusters, the gash on the little ghost boy's head.

From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
Ooh yes.... I'll take a look at him. I think good aging is difficult.

And the kids looked amazing in that ep. I think I might do a mini "kids" section because so many of the kids had awesome makeup.

Thanks so much hun.

Yes, the teacher genuinely seemed to have waited 10 years to film again!

Also - the ghoulish kids always have the best makeup! The girl from 4x11 and the one from 1x19. Let's not forget the boy in 1x03. Amazing!

I second whoever put In My Time of Dying and Everybody Loves a Clown. The claw marks on everybody after Shadow were right up there. Some of what they did with vamp Dean was good and Sam in the panic room at the end of Season 4 too. Dean on the wires in hell. What they do with victims and monsters is often really good if a bit gross. Death and Famine were awesome. Jo looked like a ghost when she showed up in Defending Your Life. There's probably more....

Thanks hun. There's probably HEAPS! I mean, I know there is. ../o\ Narrowing a selection down will be tough, but at least I have something to go on.

So many of the victims and monsters to consider also. I often think of dead Adam in the coffin.

Famine... and that poor woman he infected, were very well done.
