I think it's handy knowing the spoiler tolerance level of my darling flist. Some of you I know... but some of my new friends *waves* I'm not sure about. So....a simple poll.

I mostly hate being spoiled because it usually makes me miserable, but on the other hand I am a complete, helpless, masochistic spoiler addict and I read every spoiler out there.

If I could I would choose to see some spoilers - the ones that tantalize - although not big plot spoilers. I love speculating about the range of possibilities something might lead to... and it cranks up my excitement/anticipation level.

Ironically keeping the Wiki spoiler free exposes me to all the spoilers! But honestly i don't know how people exist on the internet - esp twitter and tumblr - these days and avoid them for a show they are closely involved with.

I think that's why I've let my guard down a little. I am bound to be spoiled at some point.

I've rather enjoyed the spoilers this time - even though I fluctuate between WANT and DO NOT WANT - I rather like that they could mean anything and it's fun to speculate.

I think though I'll go back to no seeking spoilers. I love being surprised...

And then I see a spoiler coming my way and I'm like, "GIMME THAT SPOILER!!!!"

I think with me i don't go looking for spoilers but if i do get spoiled i don't really mind (unless it is a really really big spoiler) because i like being spoiled sometimes because it prepares you for show but i don't want to be completely spoiled as i like watching the show with not knowing what's going to happen.

I'm not massively fussed about it, although prefer eps to be a 'surprise' in general.

One thing I do HATE though is being accidentally spoiled because someone on my flist doesn't put spoilers under a cut. I think it's always safer to cut them!

Yeah. I hate having gone to the effort of avoiding a spolier and then see it mentioned uncut. I see this less and less these days I have to say, but a few years ago that was a real problem.

I wish I hadn't though, I really, really wish I hadn't, my imagination is not a pretty place at all.

I thought about tuning off the internet until October, but that wasn't very feasible, but I am going back to my "DON'T LOOK AT SPOILERS YOU BLOODY IDIOT" mode right now.

And I hear ya. I've been wanting to discuss the spoilers because I think sometimes hashing it all out helps (especially if you are feeling worried about some aspect ::koff:: like I am...), but I'm waiting until I post some meta so I don't get swayed by others' thoughts. After that... I wanna get some things off my chest...;DD

I don't usually care about spoilers for shows, but when it comes to SPN I've found that actively avoiding spoilers makes me enjoy the show more. In fact, getting spoiled significantly decreases my enjoyment of an episode. I like being surprised every week.

I also find that, in spoiler discussions, fans inevitably see the worst in what is, at best, incomplete information. They leap to conclusion and wail and gnash their teeth and rend their garments, and it's usually for naught. This plays a HUGE role in lessening my enjoyment of the episode, having to deal with a week or more's worth of "Oh GOD they are RUINING the show FOREVER!!11!1!!" from fellow fans.

So I steer clear of spoilers and anyone who is discussing them, because it invariably harshes my squee.

Make sense?

Date: 2012-07-21 04:53 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
YES YES YES!

This is me! I LOVE being surprised and I HATE all the gnashing of teeth over spoilers. I'm even feeling guilty of doing some gnashing myself but I've turned it all around and just gone... SQUEEEE! I can't wait...

And then I'm back to completely avoiding spoilers. Show IS more enjoyable that way...<3

I go about 99% spoiler free EXCEPT during hiatus where I completely lift that rule and morph into a 100% spoiler fiend/junky. Gimme, gimme. It's like temporarily lifting a diet restriction because you are pregnant or because you are going on this fantastic vacation. So much fun.

I like knowing the basic premise of an episode, but I generally avoid anything that might tell me if a character is going to die/come back to life. Setup, yes, punchline, no. But it's tough to know the difference before clicking through, so I tend to end up usually erring on the side of unspoiled.

Date: 2012-07-21 01:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
Yeah... it would be good to be able to filter the spoilers somehow. Though I think the really big plot moments they manage to keep quiet somehow. But yeah, it's probably better to see nothing than risk it...

Something I used to do (I can believe this...) is checked out the reaction posts before I watched the ep.../o\ Completely and utterly spoilery. I stopped doing that after S1, once I discovered that really wasn't a good idea. Spoilers after it's aired could be anything! At least up till then some things are still unknown...

I like following spoilers, I'd feel like I was missing out on a lot if I didn't follow all the discussions after Comic Con and the interviews promoting the new season and what's going to happen. I understand that people may not want to be spoiled for any big twist or to know exactly what's going to happen in an episode, but stuff like trailers and what the writers and actors on the show are actually promoting to us are cool by me as I figure they know what would ruin it for us and what it would be better not to know, so I've personally never understood the point of going completely unspoiled and not even watching the trailers. But that's just me *g*

ETA And thinking about it I don't think any big twists have been spoiled recently? Stuff like Bobby's death or his later return as a ghost came as a shock to pretty much everyone, so it seems to me like most of the important stuff is kept under wraps and when people talk "spoilers" it generally is just the knowledge that the people from the show are actually releasing to get us talking about the new season? I know when I watched Buffy there were all sorts of unofficial spoiler sources lol who seemed to be able to find out everything, but I'm pretty sure most future info on Supernatural is released in an official capacity and is just all the info people put together from what the writers and actors are spilling?

Yeah - you make good points. I think this time there was just so much going on with Comic Con that I felt kinda out of it if I didn't watch some of the interviews etc. The spoilers have created quite a stir and I suppose it's that...um... negatively that I like to avoid sometimes. I enjoy discussing them though, so I am in quite a bind.

And I agree. I don't think we're ever spoiled for the big stuff. I am sure the actors and production team are told exactly what they can and can't say. They were pretty much all saying the same thing so I am sure there's a heap they aren't saying. They seem to run a pretty tight ship there...

I just can't wait to see it all now!!

Um. I like to be spoiled for things when it will increase my enjoyment of the show, and to avoid spoilers when they would decrease my enjoyment of the show.

Some things worry me, and I'm happier knowing how they will turn out in advance so I can settle in and enjoy the details of the episodes. Sometimes the twist is the whole point, so knowing in advance would ruin everything.

Of course, in practice there's no way to know which spoilers will be which, so I tend to swing wildly from reading everything to reading nothing. But I never mind if somebody tells me something, or if I find spoilers in reviews or essays, because if I don't understand my own spoiler policy I can hardly expect anybody else to. :)

Seems like the way to be! I sometimes wish I could just tap into the spoilers I want to know. Mostly though I think I prefer not knowing anything. I love being totally surprised. I remember when Lucifer first appeared to Sam in S7 - I was completely surprised. I even missed Mark's name appear in the opening credits so it came totally out of the blue.
