I recently filled up my iPod with podfics. I often take a chance on what I'm dl'ing - readers I don't know, writers I don't know, fics I'm not sure about. Sadly I gave up listening to 3 fics because they just weren't my thing (one because I find POV changes every paragraph really hard to connect with). But there were a few I can highly recommend:

Story: And Indeed There Will be Time
Author: gretazreta
Reader: painted_pain

Readers are artists and this reading is a very fine example of that artistry. She understand the poetry in a story and her voice matches this particular story perfectly. I got completely lost in the telling of this fic. Seriously, when you can actually see the ocean rather than the park you are walking in you know the reader is doing a great job.

And the story itself is beautiful. I adored Dean's voice and the underlying pain is palpable. It's mild Sam/Dean - but don't let that put you off - be it that you're not into Sam/Dean or want something more than "mild". This fic seems to work either way. It's curtain fic ... without the curtains. I adored it.


Story: The Ones that Can Swallow You Whole

Reader: exmanhater
(J2, NC17)

I love exmanhater's voice. She is so easy to listen to. This is such a delightful story. Seeing the way the J's overcome their personal obstacles and find love is truly heartening. I loved the setting. After listening to this I felt like I had actually been to this place.

Story: jRobot
Author: sandymg
Reader: fromcainwthlove
(J2 NC17)

This is the first time I've listened to this reader, so I took a chance and I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed her voices for this story. The story itself is great fun. There's adventure and sci-fic and LOVE and Chad. (I only know Chad from fanfic and he's usually this douche. In this one he's rather awesome....). It also makes a great comment on the meaning of life...

Story: The Time Traveller's Brother
Author: gretazreta
Readers: applegeuse and fishpatrol

It was such a great idea to have two readers read the alternating POV's in this story. Both readers did a great job. It's a complex story, shifting timelines and story lines and I marvel at the author's ability to keep track of it all. I had this fic book marked ages ago to read and I just never found the time to sit down to read it. Thank god for podfics!

(I have Big Bang recs to do, but that will have to come later. So much good stuff out there...)

Other things to check out:

bertee's post at spnroundtable looking at actors who have appeared more than once on SPN. This is so cool! She lists 19 actors that have reappeared during the seasons. Adds extra meaning to the "Supernatural family". :D

If you haven't been watching spn_summer_art then WATCH NOW! So much GORGEOUS art to reveal in. (It's all over now, but make sure you check all the posts if you haven't been watching *g*).

The collab is an interesting idea. With a complex story like that one it's rather nice to have a Sam voice and a Dean voice.

There are many podficcers I love - we are spoiled with the talent. :))

Me too, I can do stuff and still consume fic, it's awesome. :D I'm also like you that I pick fic I might not tackle if I was just reading and while there are some misses I keep discovering some great authors. I think an actual SPN radio play would be super neat as well LOL

HOMG! How cool would that be!!?! I reckon the talent is certainly around for that! (though, um, serious lack of male voices out there...but I'm sure there would be a way around that..).

What a great idea! (and hey... if we have fans making an SPN film at the moment, why not a radio play!)

I could live with female voices though a project involving some of the fandom-tortured SOs I hear about would be hilarious as well. I think we definitely have the talent, yeah.

Thanks for ALL the recs! (I'm eager to hear your upcoming spn_j2_bigbang recs, too. I haven't been as thrilled with recent weeks' entries as I was in the beginning. Though I know we sometimes look for different things in our fics.)

Have you tried this podfic? I *love* the fic (rec'd it in an early spn_littlebro newsletter) but haven't had time to download/listen to the podfic version yet.

You're welcome. I think you'll like that first one particularly. The imagery is beautiful and the reader really captures it with her reading.

And, well, actually my Big Bang recs are either ones that have already been recced on spn_littlebro or ones that you've already recced! (I loved Fear Death by Water *g*).

I haven't listened to (or read) that podfic yet. It will be the next one on my download batch!)

I finally gave in and started listening to podfics this year. I am so addicted.

I love exmanhater's and painted_pain's readings. I have these podfics on my zune, but I haven't listened to them yet. Juice817 is awesome too.

Podfics are the bestest things ever. :D I wouldn't have a change to "read" nearly as much as I do without them.

And there are so many great readers out there. We are so lucky. :))

I've actually read all of these but it is always great when a reader matches well with a story. Doing a good podfic is way harder than it seems!

I often think readers must choices stories they connect with - ones they think their style matches. I think podficcing would be very hard. I would barely get through one sentence without stumbling, let alone get the voices, inflection and story nuances.
