I had an AWESOME time watching the premiere on the big screen last night. Not only watching it with fellow fans (YAY!) AND getting a fabulous goodies bag (consisting of holy water, cookies, pie, black goo, PUDDING and those little GI Joe men the boys play with in Swan Song!), but also seeing those two GORGEOUS men up close and personal was... well,... NO WORDS! Just a massive *THUD* and *SWOON* It was also FAB being able to thrash the episode out straight after with fans.

Aannyways....

First up - I LOVE, LOVED IT. In fact the more I think about it the more I'm impressed with it. I do have to watch it again to catch everything but I thought it was an extremely tight, well constructed, interesting and intriguing episode.

I also need to say that I may be the only gal in fandom to say this but I LOVED Sam's hair. \o/ I'm so glad they've kept it long and flowing. I could be a little wanky and say it was *extra* long because this shows Sam hasn't been bothered getting it cut. His life was "free and easy" and hair cutting just didn't feature that much. It's shows his disinterest in his overall life... (Shutup. I can meta about Sam's hair if I want to...)

Some episode highlights and thinky thoughts:

I think the way they chose to open the episode was rather interesting. Two young people camping and there's something outside. It reminded me a little of Wendigo. It certainly felt like numerous episode openers where the Monster of the Week is introduced. I love it because the "monster" turns out to be Dean. What a great way to introduce a character who has been living (and later we find out, helping) monsters. I'm not sure if it's there to suggest that Dean might well be a monster of sorts or it was just symbolic. Either way... GOOD CHOICE!

I adored ALL of Dean's storyline. There's still so much yet to find out but what we got was awesome. So many fabulous questions left unanswered. I particularly love how Dean not only (seemingly) adapted to Purgatory but he also seemed to thrive there. The notion of it being "pure" for Dean is wonderful. I can't wait to find out more but I definitely think it's a great direction for his character. (I can mentioned how god damn HOT he was too can't I? *fans self*)

I have to say I am glad I was spoiled for Sam's reaction to Dean's return. I've spent the last 3 months thrashing that out and worrying and weeping and generally being OMG they are going to character assassinate Sam, but after seeing it I don't feel bad - at all! I mean it was damn hard hearing Sam admitting to not looking for Dean but I KNOW there's so much more to the story. The fact the his not looking was made a big deal of means it's IMPORTANT. And that's all I really want.

For me, the most important scene in revealing Sam's "true" state of mind whilst he was "truly alone" was the scene with the dog at the vet. That level of emotion is more of an indication of what was (is?) really going on. We SAW a lot of Dean's "secrets" in this episode, but we only got glimpses of Sam's. There's just so much more going on. My initial reaction is that Sam might be lying about not looking for Dean, but I can also accept that he just simply gave up. (There's so much more to say about all this but I'm holding off for the moment. There's just too much we don't know and brain is feeling like mush at the moment. ( [livejournal.com profile] dotfic sums it up nicely for me here though.).

I also think making Amelia unsympathetic was important. She was deliberately made unlikeable so there's a HEAP more going on with her that first mets the eye. Just like with Sam. I think making her like that and Sam almost overly distraught was very significant. And the fact that the word "responsibility" was used in this scene, mirroring Dean's protest that Sam had a responsibility to Kevin and to others, was also highly significant.

*BOUNCES* I felt it was such a strong season opener. I sincerely hope they can maintain that level of intrigue, tight writing, awesome cinematography (how's all those low angle shots?! Wheeee!) and strong character story lines.

I know there's a lot more to say but I think because I have chatted and thought about it so much before now I'm having trouble rehashing it here. Needless to say I pretty much loved EVERYTHING!

I want to post pictures but that will have to wait for another time...;)

I haven't had a chance to read many ep reactions. Life has been a little crazy (in a good way!). I think it's mostly been positive. I think? (I hope!)

I feel like there is so much going on for Sam. There's so much hidden and I just KNOW he'll have good reasons for not looking for Dean. I am dying to find out. How awesome we have another episode next week! \o/
