Jan. 24th, 2013 04:09 pmSQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! About BLOODY TIME!
That was damn entertaining!! Above everything else I want from my show its to be entertained. If I'm not entertained or enjoying it rather defeats the purpose of television (and escapism). I can't remember the last time I laughed so much or went...awwwwwwww so much.
For an episode to be more than just entertainment it also needs to include some references to past episodes (TICK!!) awesome characters (TICK!) Sam and Dean being brotherly (TICK TICK!!) slick dialogue (TICK!) tight directing (TICK!) and girl kissing (TICK!).
In addition to that we had cool costumes, SWORDS, and Dean being a Dean I love.
If I was anyone else I'd stop there and let that be enough but I have to say more. You know me. ;)
Counting the ways (oooh, I haven't done this in a LONG TIME!)
1. This cements Robbie Thompson as my absolute favourite writer on the show atm. I love how he structures his episodes. He has great dialogue and ties in information from past episodes. There was a lovely mix of tongue-in-cheek and serious business. A wonderful balance.
2. It also cements that we are really meant to believe that Sam left behind a life he desperately wanted. Dean mentioned it a number of times and the episode was ALL ABOUT THAT! The theme of living in a "fantasy" (aka unreal) world pointed straight to Sam. Anvilious with all the pointed shots to Sam, but this really was about him realising that running away from who he really is (a hunter dammit) doesn't work. Charlie realised it about her own life. And Sam realised it about his (I think). Has he fully accepted it? Maybe. Looks like he's resigned himself to knowing he'll never be able to have a long term relationship (that moment in the tent with the girl was all about that yeah?). There's a whole lot more on this but I'd said enough about all that previously. Time for me to move on....
3. Dean could talk to Charlie. It's consistent with Dean's character that he can tell others his problems but not to Sam. I loved that we picked up the conversation just after he'd told her all about what has been going down recently. It obviously weighs heavily on him. And YES DEAN. YOU DID JUST BREAK UP WITH SOMEONE! Sheesh....*hugs* him. It'll catch up with him - in the meantime he wants to have some fun. It makes sense. I also liked how focussed he was on how Sam was doing after his decision. I wonder if Sam knows Dean ditch Benny?
4. Fuck me but Jensen is handsome. I know...DUH..but just saying. That costume!!!!....as Charlie would say..."swoon* (need icon STAT!).
5. Jensen actually looked like he was having heaps of fun making that (ALL THE SNEAKY SMILEY LOOKS!). So did Felicia. It oozed off the screen. Tougher for Jared because he had to be in the mindset of just leaving the love of his life (:koff:) forever (even though he'd already done that before...), so good for him for having to be the solemn, serious one.
6. ENDING!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you show for letting Sam offer the olive branch to Dean. LET'S PLAY! \o/ I'm glad we didn't have to have cranky, resigned Sam for the whole episode. And YAY for giving Jensen that speech at the end! Eat your heart out Mel. And that frisbee was a classic!
7. Charlie. A ray of sunshine in our dark, angsty show. Like her shifts from being flippant to scared to introspective to confident and strong. *swoon*
8. I know nothing about LARPing other than what I've seen on this show. No idea if that's a good representation, but it looks like fun. AND a lot of hard work. I certainly understand escaping the real world to immerse yourself in something other. I do it all the time...;D
9. Sword fights, SAM GETTING CHOKED!!!!, Dean in a wig (I can just picture all the gifs from this ep!), Sam with his hair tied up (braided maybe?) \o/ So much awesome rolled into one ep!
10. I love you. I know.
So nice to be able to squee and be happy after an episode again. It doesn't wipe the slate clean for their mishandling of the story lines this season but it does restore my hope for the future.

It's very late here and I cannot sleep and might be a bit drunk and have not yet read your entire post. But I just had to SQUEE as I may finally fall asleep in a few moments and am likely unable to be coherent much.

It was at least a much more cheerful examination of the idea than we've had recently. Reminding Charlie (and allowing her to demonstrate) that she's actually a real-life hero and not just a pretend one. That you may not get the girl forever, but that doesn't change the fact that you saved her. That doing the right thing can mean people come down on your side in the end.
While none of that is an absolute fix, I think it's a great place for Sam to start working on his life and finding a way to be happy in it.

The ending was lovely. I love that 'because it's lots of fun' is presented as a perfectly good reason for doing something. I loved that it was them embracing the glorious weirdness of the experience as a good thing. I loved that part of the appeal was ensuring that Charlie got to keep her kingdom, so they made her life better this time instead of destroying it. It puts Sam and Dean firmly back in the category of people I can like and respect.
Charlie. A ray of sunshine in our dark, angsty show. Like her shifts from being flippant to scared to introspective to confident and strong.
Charlie is fantastic. I really enjoy her characterisation as someone who is smart enough to know danger is bad, but nevertheless can't abandon her responsibilities. I think that's why she meshes so well with Sam and Dean. The major difference between them is that most (Dick Roman aside) of her experience in that line comes from fiction, so she's less bitter about peril while still being aware of it. It's also an interesting contrast of recurring characters. Amelia and Benny are all about angst and struggle and being unhappy with your lot - and yet being unable to break free and find happiness. Garth and Charlie are both about embracing who you are and finding joy in it.

Date: 2013-01-24 11:59 am (UTC)I thought incorporating Charlie's story and using it to help Sam move on was nice. Good to see them showing rather than telling us this stuff. And THANK YOU SHOW for giving Sam's story some sort of acknowledgement and conclusion. It was a mess but at least they gave it some value by giving us some more of it in this ep. I didn't expect that.
It puts Sam and Dean firmly back in the category of people I can like and respect.
They were so much more likable in this episode. I wonder if it's because they are back together and generally happier. I could say that for Dean for sure. He was almost busting with the happy that he had Sam back to himself.
I'm loving both Charlie and Garth for their lack of angst. They have both been touched by the supernatural but have't let it weigh them down. I like the mix - some characters full of the angst. Some not.

Date: 2013-01-24 09:41 am (UTC)I really enjoyed this ep too. It was a lot of fun. I'm glad to see that Sam is back essentially where he was in S6-7 about their ability to have a normal life outside hunting. I'm not really sure what the purpose of Sam's sl with Amelia was, but I'm glad it appears to be over. I hope so at least.
I loved how Dean sort of asked Sam out on a date at the beginning. Sam got interrupted by Garth's call, so who knows what he would have said. That whole scene was very S1, what with Dean asking Sam about having fun. I remembered Dean pointing at the waitress back in the day and saying, "That is fun." LOL Yeah, Sam agreeing to play was great because it wasn't resigned. It was kind of happy. Happier than we ever actually saw him with Amelia.
And Dean wanting to LARP so badly! I just did a little Tumblr post about that. Here's a guy who had very little chance to be a kid, so his attraction to dressing up and playing pretend makes so much sense. Couple that with the fact that probably some of his best memories from when he was a kid with Sam was when John wasn't around and they were able to pretend to be cowboys or pirates or knights. And as an adult, to get to escape the fear and grief and bloody horror of their lives for a couple of hours, to be somewhere else, someone else, that must be really appealing.
Jensen didn't just look hot, he looked younger. Weird. Maybe he's getting more rest or he's just happy about becoming a dad. Whatever it is, it agrees with him.
If I have one complaint, it's that a lot of Charlie's dialogue sounded like voice over -- as though it was recorded in a different studio from Sam and Dean's, especially at the beginning.
Great ep overall though.

Date: 2013-01-24 12:25 pm (UTC)I keep wondering too. I think it was a mix of a reason to put a wedge between the brothers and to actually give Sam the normal life he has (apparently) been wanting. Not a lot of sense in all that, but there you have it.
I loved how Dean sort of asked Sam out on a date at the beginning.
Ha! I thought the same thing! I love Dean's idea that having a day off is taking Sam to a movie. I LOVE THESE GUYS!! (prime for some fic writing me thinks...;D)
I love your reasoning for why Dean loves dressing up. Makes perfect sense. I also love that this is part of Dean we've seen before - this wasn't a new incarnation of Dean. Just a happier one.
Jensen looked so fine. The anti-angst works well on him. ;)

Robbie is great. I know many hated Bitten and even though it wasn't one of my favorites of his (I think Slash Fiction and now this one takes that prize) I appreciated what he was doing there. He's a solid writer. (yay!)

I loved how sam and dean were still getting over there issues and i loved that whilst the issues weren't swept under the rug they didn't overtake the episode and i loved the end scene - i haven't laughed that hard at supernatural in a long time.
I adore charlie - she's one of my favourite characters on the show ever!
Hopefully this episode is a sign of how good the second part of season 8 can be *crosses fingers*

I hope so. This isn't the first time they have brought it up this year. In Hunteri Heroici, the whole living in a dream world vs. reality was brought up, as well. I hope Sam is ready to forward now. Or is this going to be an ongoing theme this year?

Like the fact that Dean's suggestion that they take a day off and have fun, and/or Sam's suggestion that they stick around and have some fun, are taking place on Dean's birthday!

Date: 2013-01-25 12:37 am (UTC)And yes yes. Great to see Dean smile and have some fun. I always think that Dean doesn't need much to keep him happy. He likes the simple things in life...dressing up, pie, his car, his brother...
And yeah - Dean knew it would be hard for Sam to have that life. I like that he offered to give him that if he truly wanted it. (though I don't think Dean would be happy without Sam to be honest).

Date: 2013-01-24 03:15 pm (UTC)2.) I saw this point as reciprocal. Sam is trying to be what Dean wants – 100% hunter, both feet in – and Dean is trying to recognize that Sam needs a little bit of ‘normal’ in his life. Hunting is deadly serious business, but it ain’t everything.
3.) Hmm! I wonder if Dean told Sam about dumping Benny, too! I do love that Dean opened up to Charlie; she’s unfiltered enough to tell him he acted like a dick. I still think we’re missing a decent explanation of why Sam didn’t look for Dean (it still feels very much shrouded and vague) but I may never get that. Ah well.
4.) Yes, yes he is. His widdle bow-legs in leather pants? Girl, puhleeze.
5.) This is a little bit of a bone of contention for me, because Dean always gets the snappy lines and the heaps of fun. He always gets to bond with the co-stars, and Sam has to play the Straight Man (no pun intended!) It’s starting to feel a tad like lazy writing to me. Or maybe it’s just my Sam!girl tendencies rearing their ugly heads. Probably the latter!
6.) OMG, yes. Just yes.
7.) More yes.
8.) Okay, true confessions: I fantasy LARPed twenty years ago. SPN did their homework. They prettied it up a little but hit the nail right on the head. Huge props to them for getting it right!
9.) Oh, Sam with the choking. Is it because you have such a long, pretty neck, sir? Quite possibly.
10.) Is there enough love to go around?
Boy, did we need this episode. And the teaser to next weeks episode looks fantastic too. WELCOME BACK, SHOW.

Date: 2013-01-25 12:51 am (UTC)2. Yes, good point. I think maybe Dean needs to show Sam that the life doesn't always have to be hunting - they can take a day off and chill out if they want to. Of course a hunt found them (again) - luckily it was a fun one.
3. Yeah - don't think we'll get more on why Sam didn't look. I am assuming he thought Dean was dead so...yeah. Doesn't sit well with me but I don't think Carver has thought beyond that.
5. Ah yes. That was why I was musing that Sam had to play the er...straight man in this one. I'd love to see him (them!) break that mold for Sam because he always plays the straight guy in these type of episodes. Dean gets to have all the fun while Sam mopes and eye rolls. In this case I think it worked for where the character is at at the moment (thank god for the end!!), but I'd love to see an ep where we get to see the lighter side of Sam.
8. Oh yay! You did? I bet that was fun! I'm so glad they got it right then. :))
9. Every time I see Sam choked I feel like they are remembering that this is what happens to this character. Sam gets choked, Dean gets thrown into walls. I was like...YAY! (and totally geeky but my first thought was...it's someone taller and stronger than Sam so I can go with this...)
We DID need this episode! (and I did watch the teaser and I am looking forward to seeing what they do with this. GOD, I hope they handle it well. It has potential to be fantastic...;D)

Date: 2013-01-24 03:30 pm (UTC)Another thing that I really liked that I didn't see mentioned before.
First, I'm not a LARPer but had friends who LARPed. So this was never odd to me. People who don't really come in contact with this world often have this strange ideas about the people who play. The show really showed it as a nice escapism with other like-minded people, not just some freaks or geeks playing dress up. So yeah, nicely done

Date: 2013-01-25 12:56 am (UTC)Oh yes. I really got the feeling about the escapist nature of LARPing. I thought they were very respectful to those who do it (and I suppose gamers and :koff: obsessed TV fans, come into that). I like that they could use it as a way to explore the whole notion of living in the "real" world for Sam. (with the added irony that the SPN verse is completely imaginary...;D)

Date: 2013-01-24 04:18 pm (UTC)For Jensen and Jared, I'm glad they got a chance to have an episode where they could have fun. It's got to be wearing to go to work with their characters at odds for so long.
I hope the rest of the season follows this and that Robbie Thompson gets to write another episode. I never feel like his Sam and Dean are out of character.
Goes back to jumping around the house......

Date: 2013-01-25 02:23 pm (UTC)I hope that end is as close to the Butch and Sundance ending as we ever get.
Oh god yes! As much as they both keep saying they want to go out like Butch and Sundance I would much rather they drive off into the sunset).
I never feel like his Sam and Dean are out of character.
Yes. I like that he gives the boys a chance to do something different and yet still maintains their characters. I loved that in both Slash Fiction and Time After Time.
Oh and...he is writing another one this season. Not sure how spoiled you want to be(?) but yeah...he's down for another one. All I can say is YAY!
I have been so happy (and relieved!) after this episode. I feel like I can go in with a new sense of vigor. :))

Date: 2013-01-24 07:34 pm (UTC)Though I'm still scared to. I went into this with complete faith in Carver, I was cheerleading and defending him all summer. Because Carver wrote my two favourite episodes, A Very Supernatural Christmas and Mystery Spot, I was so certain the show would be awesome with him running it. But once I saw s8 I had to come to the sad conclusion that back then he was writing Kripke's vision rather than his own. I remember seeing interviews with Kripke about those two episodes and he was geeking out with manic glee over all the ideas in them, and how happy and excited he had been when they were breaking the stories. Pretty sure Kripke was the impetus behind them; S8 has been nothing at all like them, the opposite in fact. Seriously melodramatic instead of irreverently funny, and anti-brotherly instead of brotherly. By ep7 I had lost all trust in Carver, and now I'm afraid to watch so long as he's at the helm for fear the characters and show I love will be even further tainted. As it is, I wish I could erase s8 from my mind.
Maybe I'll wait to see if this ep is an isolated incident or if the trend continues.

Date: 2013-01-25 02:44 pm (UTC)I have seriously struggled with this season. I have not liked that handling of Sam's back story, nor do I think they've made enough of Dean's time in Purgatory.
But...
I have more faith since watching this episode though. My feeling is - Carver has gone in with good intentions but the story lines have been somewhat mismanaged - or rather they haven't been told or as executed as well as they could.
After watching this I have more faith that he actually has the story of the brothers at the forefront of the narrative. Up until now it's not what we've wanted to see but I think it's all been about their relationship and exploring why (and why not) they work so well together.
I sincerely hope this is the turning point and we'll begin to see more communication and understanding between them.
I recommend watching if only to be able to sit back and enjoy a laugh. It's fun but it doesn't ignore everything that has gone before. It has some tender moments too. To me, it's almost a fix-it to wait we've had so far.

LOL!!!
How about that, an episode that didn't need such subheadings in a review because to be honest - you would have to work extremely hard to find something NOT to like in that episode.
It's very much a case of "And my favourite part was ALL of it" ;) But that said - the dialogue, the wardrobe, the comedy, the settings - all of it was just brilliant but I think my most favourite aspect of this episode - everytime Sam and Dean exchanged words. Dean, for the first time in a long time, is actually articulating himself really well to Sam, we're actually SEEING (not filling in with our own canon) him placing himself in Sam's perspective, trying to understand how he's feeling and it's WORKING. Sam is just soaking it all up, rolling around in it and appreciating it. I haven't rewatched yet - but will do so again today and no doubt a number of more times. It's definitely going on the list for future get together rewatches!

I gotta say next time we catch up for a rewatch this ep is A MUST SEE one!! (of course I will have already re-watched it. It's on my list to do today as I do my mile high pile of ironing). This is the kind of ep to share with fans. So much laughing! :DD (hee...I wrote that before I got to your last line *BG* Great minds and all that...;D)
And YES YES!!! We don't have to fill in our own canon! \o/ Dean being an awesome big brother and Sam recognising it for what it is. YAY! That last moment was super awesome. Sam giving Dean something. And when Dean was doing his speech and Sam saying..."It's the only one he knows...." DIES When they watch movies together I imagine it's Braveheart and Dean is there muttering that speech. Sam's eyerolling of course, but loving it (as he secretly loves EVERYTHING Dean does).
OMG...I've gotl all the DeannSam feels back again!!! \o/

Date: 2013-01-25 03:13 pm (UTC)I liked this one - a lot.
I was a bit nervous of how they'd approach the whole role play thing as I've hated the other episodes where they've taken pot shots at fans and I'd live quite happily knowing I'd never see Becky again, but saying all that I was surprised how deftly they handled it this time around. For me, it was also representative of Renaissance Faires and the re-enactment people and as such I was much happier with that, I didn't feel like I was the one swimming in the goldfish bowl while they took low pot shots. That was good, no, actually that was great! Most of all the brothers Winchester, for all their scoffing at first, came to realise that these people were having FUN and YES! Thank you writers for letting Sam be the one that suggested they stayed and they were having FUN with those 'fans' and that? That was simply adorable.
I loved, of course I loved every single Winchester conversation this time - although, yes, I have to say it. Sam didn't really lose THAT much as what he had with Amelia wasn't real, nothing could have been real when one half of the couple is lying through his teeth! Hey, but whatever, everything else between them worked really well. If they had sold me on what Sam had lost it would have been perfect.
Loved watching Dean get to play dress up, loved the way he couldn't help but plot the battle strategy they needed. Loved Charlie - now there's a woman I can relate to, complicated, brave and not brave all rolled into one.
Couple of niggles, I would have liked some shout out that Dean had been taken by fairies before, thought they might have tipped a wink there. Mostly though I would have liked Sam to have had one of those conversations with Charlie. Honestly I don't think they're handling the time off for the stars very well, I'm not privvy to what demands or constraints are in place, so I can't really make up my mind exactly what is going on, but the disparity is again showing and that's a shame and a detriment to the show. From my perspective behind the screen it felt at times as if the very few Sam's scenes were shot in a different time zone!
It was good though and I smiled a lot and I laughed with them and a little bit of hope dropped in from somewhere... hehe.

Date: 2013-01-25 03:46 pm (UTC)Ha! That answers it! Sam and Dean had been taken over by clones! Now it all makes sense! :D
but saying all that I was surprised how deftly they handled it this time around.
That's because Robbie Thompson wrote it. I have a lot of respect for that writer. (I know he blotted his copy book with Bitten for some but I've loved all his eps...)
If they had sold me on what Sam had lost it would have been perfect.
This is what I just don't get. Even in this episode Sam (maybe Jared?) didn't sell me on what he'd lost. I'm not sure if it looks like he's lying because he is or because Jared is just not selling it. I HATE that I don't believe he had a life he could have happily and easily lived in. I really want to feel for Sam and his loss...but I just don't. Maybe it's because I REALLY want him to want to be with Dean so I keep thinking..."you're kidding yourself Sam". All I can do now is hand wave that that whole thing (unless Carver has a magical cure up his sleeve for it all...).
Dean being taken before by fairies would have been cool. Robbie did a pretty good job of calling back to previous eps but that on top would have been great.
I think Jared has negotiated extra time off and in eps like this it probably shows. Though I felt this was actually a Sam episode in that it was all about his story. Him coming to terms with not being able to live in his (so called) "dream" world. Sure, it would have been nice to actually see him have a conversation about how he feels but this is VERY Supernatural when it comes to Sam. Most of the time we either have to guess what he's feeling or hear it through Dean.
It certainly gave me a lot of hope. They were certainly much more recognizable as the brothers we know and love. And it was a HEAP of fun! (YAY!!!!)

It was especially great that past eps weren't ignored and we could see Dean making sure Sam was ok.
And Jensen looked like he was revealing in it. :) Hee....and it might have been due to him finding out about becoming a daddy. :)) (yay! Daddy!Jensen)
