I was musing recently about making a gif community. I know that tumblr exists for gifs but thought it would be nice have somewhere on LJ where people could go to post and look at gifs, ask questions, read tutorials, post requests etc. So...supergifs was born!

With awesome help from kj_svala and stir_of_echoes the gif community was created (thank you guys! <33).

Please drop on by and check it out (and join or watch!). There are already a number of posts - including some tutorials on how to make gifs.

And don't worry! We won't be bombarding you with gifs. Just enough to keep you entertained. ;D

This is a great idea! I don't make .gifs myself, but I see .gifs on Tumblr all the time that I'd like to link my friends to, but I understand why they get irritated by Tumblr invading this blogspace. Look forward to seeing it!

Thanks! I'm hoping it will be a place where people who are not on Tumblr can see some of the gorgeous works that are over there. And also a place for people who makes gifs to share them on LJ and not just on Tumblr. :))

Hey, I just skimmed that comm and maybe you can answer a question for me: is there a way to make gifs without buying expensive software? Because the tutorials looked like they were for specific (expensive?) software or to add specific effects, but I didn't see anything for beginners.

That's a good question. I started trying to make gifs on free software. It is out there - if you google "free gif making programs" you'll see a range of programs available. They only real problem is that they are very limited - but for starting out it should at least give you some ideas. I have a mac and I used GIF Animator to start. It wasn't too bad actually.

Yeah - that's what I mean. I can search for some specific tutorials on programs you are interested in if you like? Each program will have a different ways of making them.

Essentially you need footage, a program to select the section of footage you are after (there are free programs for this also), and then a program to import the footage into. It will then create a moving sequence and turn it into a .gif. Some programs allow you to play with the colour and the size etc.

Is that what you mean?

Nah, as far as I know there's no gif program that comes with computers. They are pretty involved. Though I have discovered a few new things when searching "gifs for beginners". I will be doing a post with a few links and you can see what there is available. :)

Yes, sorry I wasn't clear. I meant a tutorial for someone who knows nothing about gifs except "they're pretty!" ;)

Gifs are fun! A bit tricky at first but once you get the hang of it they are quite easy. Though making them look amazing, like so many gif makers, is the real craft I think.
