Day 14: Ruby 1 or 2?

Don't make me choose!

This is really tough. I like both of them. When I think back on all my ep reactions and reviews I don't believe I've ever stated I like one more than the other.

I liked watching Katie Cassidy and enjoyed the sas she bought to the role. But I also liked Genevieve. I remember being really pleased with the casting at the time. She was unassuming and not quite as glamorous as Katie's Ruby (which I actually liked - Gen's Ruby was more sultry than glamorous). I think both gave solid performances.

I think if I HAD to choose - I'd probably go Gen's Ruby. Mostly because of the sizzling chemistry between her and Sam (no surprise...:D) and the final scene in Lazarus Rising.

But I liked ALL the Rubys - all 4 of them! :)

I definitely preferred Katie to Genevieve, because I think she is the better overall actress, especially Ruby's more forceful scenes suited Katie better than Genevieve. I admit, I really wished they had kept Katie for the role, mainly because it would have helped with character continuity. I mean, a lot of fans attributed the changes in Ruby's demeanour - from sassy, aggressive and snarky (S3) to gentle, sympathetic and accommodating (S4) - to the change in actress rather than to character motivation. Of course, the change in demeanour made perfect sense; Ruby needed to change her approach to Sam to get her hooks into him, but I think some of fandoms confusion could have been avoided if Katie had played her in both seasons.

Yeah. This is interesting. I agree that for continuity it would have been fantastic to have the same actress play the role. I often wonder how differently season 4 would have felt with Katie in the role. I wonder if Jared and Katie would have brought that same level of sensuality? I also wonder if the writing changed because of the actress or whether they cast someone because of the way S4 Ruby had been written. I agree that she had to have a change of motivation to get closer to Sam (and I also wonder what we might have missed out on due to the writer's strike).

I think my choice (though slim) comes down to my initial annoyance of casting a stunning blonde. Both Ruby and Bella came at a time when TPTB (the very top I believe) said more women needed to be in the show and so these characters were introduced. I remember thinking how cliched it was that we had these "kickass" stunning women and so I had an initial backlash. When Ruby2 came on the scene I remember thinking how refreshing it was to have someone less - um - Hollywood. Totally personal response of course and little to do with what they did on the screen.

(I just want to say that I absolutely hate actor bashing. I get really annoyed when I see people post childish and nasty things like describing an actor/actress as ugly, yucky or calling them stupid etc. So while I'm a bit negative in this please don't take it as bashing.)

My answer would have to be Ruby 1.0 aka Katie Cassidy. I absolutely loved her in the role in season three and consider Ruby to be one of the best female characters the show has ever had. For me Katie had the perfect balance between being vulnerable (enough to make the brother and us the viewers second guess her motives) and being kick ass so she couldn't come across as being too demure.

While I think Genevieve is a lovely person and her and Jared seem really happy I have to say based on season four (I haven't seen her in anything else) I think Gen is quite a weak actress. I thought she lacked the subtlety to the role Katie had in spades and as a result while throughout season three I was constantly jumping back and forth "Ruby is evil" "No she is good". I was pretty much convinced right from the start of season four she was going to be evil based on Genevieve's acting, and that took alot of the characters fun away for me. Perhaps I'm being unfair and it is simply due to the fact that Gen took up the latter part of Ruby's story-line that this happened, but I can't help but wonder how things would have been different had Katie finished the role.

Also I guess it's an example of how everyone sees things differently. I'm really surprised that you mention the final scene in Lazarus Rising as a highlight for Gen. I always find it overacted and have to resist the urge to cringe when I watch :s.

Yeah, I definitely think it's more about personal taste with these things. I honestly thought both actresses did a great job. I loved Katie's Ruby and I do think it's a shame that she wasn't able to continue with the role. I think it would have been so interesting to see her get her hooks into Sam (though I often wonder if Katie and Jared would have had they same on screen presence. They might have done - it's something we'll never know...).

I honestly didn't pick that Ruby was completely evil until the very end. I know that I should have done, but I kept going back and forth in S4 as I did in S3.

I haven't seen Gen in anything else either - though she did win an acting award for a film she did, so I suspect she's not so bad. I think because I liked her from the get go (when everyone else was hating on her - it felt like) I was in a position to put that aside and just watch the character. And in the final scene when she screamed about "being the best" it really hit home for me. She totally sold me on her being a demon who had worked so hard to get Sam exactly where he needed to be. It was triumph - and total devotion to Lucifer.

So I do think it is definitely personal taste. The same way some people love one character and others don't. I think we each connect to characters in a different way (and much of my reasons are due to what I said to [livejournal.com profile] galathea_snb in a comment above). Though I do rather crush on Katie at times - I enjoy her in Arrow. :)

I'd still go for Katie as I think she just had a much greater screen presence than Genevieve, much as I like Gen. I didn't think Ruby II was poor, just not as charismatic a character as Katie had made her.

Yeah - I agree that Katie has more charisma and presence on the screen. :)

I have to say I preferred Katie's Ruby but I'm really happy Gen & Jared fell in love and are so happy together :D

Definitely Ruby 2.0! Genevieve was sultry and deliciously wicked.
