Woot! Damn that was hot, I mean cool, I mean...Is it hot in here or what....?!

I have to admit, it wasn't until the end of this episode that I really got excited about it. During the episode I was getting a little restless, realising that I was really missing watching interactions between Sam and Dean. When we finally had the scenes between them (and wow, what scenes!) I could look back on the episode and really appreciate what was going on with it. The build up to their confrontation was worth it in the end. YIP!

There was a HEAP of things I loved about this ep, some things that bothered me a little bit and some things that really got my thinky brain working overtime.

First up, we HAVE to look at this section of dialogue between Cas and Hannah. And before you shout - an angel scene?!? - check it out. Imagine this dialogue between Sam and Dean...

Cas (Sam): You don't want this. I have seen what... I have made deals born of desperation and they always end in blood...and tears. Always...

Hannah (Dean): So I'm supposed to let you...

Cas (Sam): Yes. It's my life. It's my choice. And I don't want this.

Hannah (Dean): I... You're right. I'm sorry.

And it can be reversed. Sam could be saying this too (and ya wanna make a bet this exists because of the situation NOW, not previously. But, I'm not going to jump the gun on that. The fact that it exists AT ALL, indicates that at least SOME thinking is being done on this. Deals, choices, consequences, letting go…). Of course, we'll never get a scene like this between them, but I always believes scenes outside of Sam and Dean somehow relate to them and their struggles.

And actually, I loved that Cas said it. Thank god he allowed to say this and not be seduced by Metatron. I was damn well nearly screaming at the screen thinking Hannah was going to make a deal. NOT ANOTHER DEAL! (And here I was, about to fast forward through that scene because of Metatron (ugh!), but that piece of dialogue made me glad I didn't).

Aaannyway...

Highlights

Dean, Dean, Dean. Hot damn! Jensen is eating up this role and it's so damn refreshing to see him revel in this new version of his character. I think this is some of Jensen's best performances we've seen. Ok - we've seen some great tears and pain and anger, but this is nuanced. There's a range of things going on in the character and I love that it's not black and white. He could all be out and out evil, but it's so much more exciting watching this cold, calculating, smart and creepily charming version of Dean. Especially when he's teasing us with the idea of how much of "him" is really in there. He killed the douche guy and let the woman live so...that "good guy" is still in there somewhere? He didn't kill Sam so...he still has feelings for him? One minute his eyes are showing us feelings, next minute that disappears and he looks like an empty, deadly killer. I friggin LOVE IT! (More on this later).

Sammy Sammy. I preferred Jared's performance in this episode, I have to admit. It just felt like he settled a bit more, or something. He looked lost but determined. His singular focus is getting Dean back and I think (like us!) he believed there was something of Dean in there. He's grasping on to any hint that Dean is not completely lost (not killing Cole). It's heartbreaking and satisfied all my brotherly feels. I was worried that he didn't pick up that Cole was following him (and "let" him go), but I am going to go with last episode's explanation and that is Sam is so off his game he's not as alert as he usually is.

BROTHERLY FEELS! So much delicious tension between them! Those final couple of scenes were electric. Dean's sheer power and Sam's desperation. *guh* (and Dean saying he wants to takes Sam's head off - with his teeth! Slay me now). And. And: "What I'm going to do to you Sammy?....that ain't gonna be mercy either". ARGHHHHHH!!!!! *DEADED* (fic need STAT!) I LOVE THAT STUFF!

Loved the scene between Cole and Dean - mostly the dialogue and Dean's delightful performance. Cole is kind of a douche (ack, I think he's meant to be yeah?) and Dean ATE HIM UP! Again, Jensen owned the damn screen.

"You're my brother and I'm here to take you home". Nuff said. Just feels. ALL OF THEM! Whaaaa.

"Hey There Lonely Girl" - awww, Crowley's heart is broken. Awesome choice of song.

Quote from the Princess Bride! \o/ "..you killed my father. Prepare to die". Delivered perfectly.

Mid to lowlights

I have a mixed reaction to Cole. He's a little more complex than it initially seemed and I like that about him. He's clearly lost it (and has been losing it for a while we have to assume). Torturing Sam isn't going to get a character into my good books, so I like that he seems like he could be honourable, but years of being driven has worn him down and now he's lost to the depths of darkness. He represents the theme they're playing with at the moment - Sam could become like just him - or maybe he even sees an aspect of himself in Cole. We don't know yet exactly the lengths Sam has gone to to find Dean, so many be has also tortured a human, much the way Cole tortured him.

What doesn't wash with me is believing he's been hunting Dean all his life. Like really? It's taken this long to find him? Totally *handwaves* because ok, storyline and that's all there is to it (and maybe it matches that "douche" quality he has going on? He's been preparing for this since he was 13 and has lost sight of other important things in his life. AND he was prepared to let Dean kill him - wife and child? Yep, they don't feature it would seem). He's a beautifully messed up character, with shades of both Sam and Dean in him.

Calling Sam "boy" seemed strange, especially has he's supposed to be younger than Sam. Maybe it's part of the bravado.

Dean being taken out by some holy water and devil trap hand cuffs. I have to *handwave* this also I think. It seems like a far too easy way to capture Dean. I was discussing this on twitter and it could be argued that maybe Dean wanted be caught by Sam and didn't fight him or try and escape. Personally, I don't think so. I felt like Dean was truly pissed off that he was caught, so I have to believe he reacts to holy water and devil's traps like any other demon. And why not? The thing that makes him a "different" demon is his free will. He's no ones puppet and can make choices for himself. But he's still bound by the laws of demonises. *nods* Also, maybe he's looking forward to messing with Sam.

Sam's poor head! Seriously?! How many knocks can that poor boy take?! (it's replaced choking at the Sam "thing" now hasn't it?)

Sam's poor hair! (yep, I will complain about this until they stop smoothing down the back of it..*ugh*)

I'm not sure why Cas is dying. Is it because his vessel is dead and as his Grace is fading he's beginning to die just like his vessel? I dunno. I keep trying to be interested in the angel stuff, but it really doesn't grab me that much. Though, I'm still keen to see some luuuvvv be Cas and Hannah. ;). And man, I hope Metatron doesn't escape. Never hated a character so much. And that's not in the "love to hate" kind of way.

I'm always curious to see the ways in which the show keeps Cas powerless and away from the boys. He's sick and, well, that's that. I did like Cas's proclamation that Sam and Dean are his friends. I mean, we know that now, but it was a nice sentiment. I think I particularly like it when Sam is (now) included in that friendship.

Thinky:

I know there are different interpretations on how much of Dean is actually in there (another reason why the performance is so strong), and maybe we'll find out more about that next week, but for me, other than characteristics we've seen from Dean before (drinking, hanging out at a strip club, violence), there's not a lot of the Dean we know.

The really interesting moment in this episode was Dean deciding not to kill the girl but instead go for douche husband. It could be argued that that was the "real" Dean reacting, and maybe there was a little bit of that there, but ultimately it was about making a choice for himself and NOT doing what Crowley had ordered. There's no doubt that we are still seeing many of the characteristics that we now are Dean - "defending" a woman's honour last week (which ended up being more for himself than for her) and taking out douchebags (which turns out to be more about going against Crowley's wishes that deciding not to kill the girl). It's this complexity that makes demon!Dean so damn fascinating.

And one of my favourite geeky things:

Lots of flamingos in the bar. The last time we saw flamingoes was in Mystery Spot. Perhaps an accident, but I do love that the last time we saw flamingos Sam was desperately trying to save Dean.

Flamingo--$&-starburst

MS-Sam-&-flamingo

I'm liking the "feel" of S10 much more than S9 so far. Even though the boys are apart and Dean is threatening Sam (why do I find that so delicious?!) at least we know it's because Dean isn't really Dean - it's not because they've decided to make them do horrible things to each other because…um…because… Carver wants the drama!

I like that they're not letting Dean off easily. He's creepy and violent and dangerous, and nothing we are seeing is actually that far from actual Dean - as in, they are not completely foreign behaviours. Of course he's lacking the essence that makes us love him and I'm looking forward to see in how he's going to make his way back.

I'm still a tad worried what they're going to do with Sam. So far, we've had a very determined Sam, but with little insight into his head. Perhaps there's not a lot going on there other than - save Dean. I'll run with that for the moment.

Exactly. I have a certain amount of sympathy for him, but he was about to take a hammer to Sam's knee and, well, that puts him on my wrong side from the get go.

But he was clearly outmatched against demon!dean, so I did feel a little sorry for him. But then again, he wanted to die and leave his family and that's another black mark.

I love his character though - in that, I like that he's not black and white...

PLEASE! After Cas killing that angel last ep, I really worried we were just going to get more of the same - over and over and over. That scene with Metaron was very positive in that respect. I'm so glad no one buckled.

Loved, loved, loved this episode. Jensen and Jared both just.... wow.

I kept saying on Twitter last night that their chemistry was just sizzling last night.

Frankly I haven't enjoyed Dean as much as I did last night in a long time. Hmmm.. Perhaps enjoyed may be the wrong word? Enthralled? I loved some of the choices Jensen has made to portray this version of Dean. Some of the ways he tilts his head, for example. And the eyes.... You said it terrifically - it's nuanced.

And Jared / Sam. Just no words. Basically what you said. I was also concerned that Sam didn't even appear to think that Cole may be following him. But that's, whatever. I was just so impressed by Jared last night.

Damn, they were both so .... on.

It's only ep 2, I know, but I'm becoming very hopeful about this season (of course I've been there before, but whatever.)

Yeah! The Js were on fire! *guh* their chemistry is remarkable.

And I am enjoyed Dean so much as well. I love that we're seeing things (facial expressions, body language) that we just don't see from him normally.

Sam just looks so gaunt and stressed and..*wraps him in all the hugs*.

I want to be hopeful too. I want them to come through this and then NOT spend the rest of the season hiding things or pointing blame or feeling righteous in some way. I want them to started fighting the good fight together.

Yes. It was a lovely section of dialogue. And I'd love to think that Cas understanding this might just play into what's going on with Sam and Dean.

Oh and I love your icon. The yin and yang is perfect for them and I love the way there's an "S" in the pattern and with a little stretch you can make a kind of "D" from the yang side. They balance each other and are interchangeable.

OMG, I loved this episode!

Your analysis of the Castiel/Hannah speech as compared to Sam and Dean's respective situations is spot-on. And yup, it could apply to S9 and S10 goings-on. I totally missed it, as I was too busy growling at the screen to "hurry up and get back to Sam n' Dean." ;) Great catch!

Demon!Dean is terrifying, full stop. I love it!

The bar scene was magnificent! Sam and Dean (and Jared and Jensen) were firing on all cylinders, and it showed. Dean threatening to rip out Sam's throat - with his teeth! And Sam steadily moving forward, determined to save his brother. I'd really like to know what might've happened had Cole not chosen that moment to toss the gas grenade . . .

I have thoughts about Dean going down at a flick of holy water. Less than ten minutes earlier, he'd sliced himself open with the First Blade . . . and healed back up like it was nothing. At first I thought that little bit of holy water shouldn't have so much as distracted him, but remember, Abaddon was a full-on demonic Knight of Hell, and she had a similar reaction to holy water. So maybe not so improbable?

The really interesting moment in this episode was Dean deciding not to kill the girl but instead go for douche husband.

That dude's fate was sealed the moment he called Dean a punk-ass demon. :) He knew not who he was messing with.

Hey babe! It was a goodie wasn't it?!

I totally missed it, as I was too busy growling at the screen to "hurry up and get back to Sam n' Dean.

Haha! I was too! I was getting impatient and I was pretty sure either Hannah or Cas were going to make a stupid deal and that stupid Metatron would be out again. I was so THRILLED that that didn't happen. Then we got that dialogue and it spoke so loud to me about Sam and Dean. I suspect it might even be some sort of warning for what's to come (and definitely a comment on what's gone before…).

I'd really like to know what might've happened had Cole not chosen that moment to toss the gas grenade . . .

I know! Iwas like…."nooooo, I wanna see what happens!" Though I think Dean would have fought Sam and Sam would have well and truly lost and it would have broken my wee heart…

And yes. I will have to go with the holy water idea too. Even though he's "different" to some demons, he's still a demon and holy water and devil's traps should slow him down. Good thing they did! (now we can get even more scenes of them together…*g*).

That dude's fate was sealed the moment he called Dean a punk-ass demon. :) He knew not who he was messing with.

True! That guy was a dick! Who the hell bad mouths a demon - especially one who looks as cocky and ruthless as Dean.

I always believes scenes outside of Sam and Dean somehow relate to them and their struggles. Yes! And I noted this too! I think it's relevant to last season and to what's happening now. I like that they are asking questions about autonomy and in what circumstances - if any - does someone have the right to override another's will. I really like when they delve into and issue and show the shades of gray.

He could all be out and out evil, but it's so much more exciting watching this cold, calculating, smart and creepily charming version of Dean. Especially when he's teasing us with the idea of how much of "him" is really in there. I love this too. It's keeping us guessing, not hitting us over the head with it. Dean is both creepy and oddly charming (to quote a CAH card). I find I can enjoy him, but also dislike him at the same time and I won't dwell on how damn hot he is

I've been having a lot of thinkies about Crowley. It seems to me he let Dean off too easily ---> really - the King of Hell let Dean push him around? I am wondering if Crowley intended for Sam to eventually catch up to Dean with the purpose of having Dean off Sam? Maybe tying in with the the Cain/Abel history and it will somehow change Dean for good.

This was the episode I'd been hoping for last week! It had everything that a season opener should have had. I guess we needed a bit of a set up with where they were going but it was risky showing the weaker episode first, after all the opener is supposed to be the show that pulls you into a new season.

I agree that Jensen is rocking it. I think in the first half of season 9 he was tremendous, but by the last few episodes (not including the death scene) it kind of felt to me like he was almost phoning in his performance. It was just lacking something. Not to say he wasn't good, just that I think he can and has done better. Now he's knocking it out of the park.

I think Cole is a fab character but the age thing is bothering the hell out me. He just can not pass for a guy in his twenties and I can't understand why they wouldn't have gone with a more age appropriate actor. The guy is almost 40 and he looks his age. The actor is great but he's too old for the part.

I know everyone is seeing different things with Dean right now, but I don't see a shred of humanity in him. To me, he killed the husband because the guy was a moron plus he insulted him. He didn't kill the wife because it was making a statement to Crowley. And the moment Dean let Cole live, my thoughts were exactly what Dean said to Sam, it wasn't mercy, it was torture.

Jared was fabulous as well. Much better than last week where I thought it was a little overdone. He just oozed grief and emotional pain this week while still having that obsessed focus on saving Dean - it worked really well. I'm a little annoyed at Carver though, because once again he's dumbed down Sam. Like a hunter of Sam's calibre wouldn't notice he was being tailed - sheesh! Lucky everything else was great. I may even like Carver this season!

I may even like Carver this season!

Ha! Steady on! ;) (It would take A LOT for me to trust Carver again. After 2 seasons of messing with these characters, I'm not feeling all that confident…)

Cole's age makes no sense. Maybe they thought he could pull it off OR there's actually something going on with him. I saw and "idea" that Dean obviously killed Cole's dad because he was a monster so maybe there's something up with Cole too? I doubt it very much - but if there was a way to explain the age that would be awesome (premature ageing due to a hard life maybe?).

I've always felt that Jensen (and Jared) need good direction. They are good actors but having a good director can make good actors great. That shot of Sam when he shouts "where's my brother?" in the season opener made that looks more comical than serious (I thought). Plus, last week the camera kept lingering on Sam which meant he had to push it past believability. It was much better handled this episode I thought.

I truly hope we get more satisfying episodes like this. Looking forward to next weeks because Jensen is directing. So far, I've liked his direction.

Ooh, meant to say:

Like a hunter of Sam's calibre wouldn't notice he was being tailed - sheesh!

I can pass that off as Sam being off his game and focused purely on Dean. If he didn't think he was "let go" he wouldn't have even considered that he was being followed. *nods*

Yes, Yes to all you said! :)

My thought on Sam not catching Cole was much like Cole dropping his keys on purpose to follow Sam. Sam let him follow him so that he could be the distraction Sam needed to take down Dean. I might be reading too much into it and it might just be Sam isn't on top of his game. He did look so worn down poor guy!

As for Dean turning up on Cole's radar, I would think that since he wasn't aware of Dean being a hunter and he isn't a hunter himself- then the reason Dean 'turned up' is because Demon Dean is not bothering with an alias. He is proudly flaunting his name and face and not giving a crap if Sam or others find him.

Now that being said, I would think that Cole would have thought Dean was dead by now but maybe with him reappearing after his St.Louis death, the death at the jail with Hendrickson and his death most recently at the jail where the Levithan's wear wearing his face...Cole has learned that Dean Winchester is one tricky son of a bitch and able to fake his death and disappear when need be. He was just biding his time for when Dean showed his face again.

Now Cole gets it and will turn from a human tracker/hunter to more of a Gordon like supernatural hunter me thinks.

I'm willing to see where they go with him but to be honest I would have been fine with him being used as a plot device to allow a wounded Sam to get closer to his brother and take him down.

Can't wait until next week!

Oh, I can buy that! I figure they would be pretty hard to track down. I didn't think about Dean flaunting his identity since becoming a demon.

Yes, we saw some pretty unlikeable traits in Cole so I figure he really has turned into a "monster" as he said. It will be interesting to see if he finds out why Dean killed his dad. He might discover that he had, in fact, done him a favour. Or something. Still lots of mystery to be unravelled. :)

Bunches of things you hit, right on the nose!

...I always believe scenes outside of Sam and Dean somehow relate to them and their struggles. THIS.

And this: Jensen is eating up this role! He is making Dean's deliciously dead eyes and every bared tooth so effin' enjoyable! The wit, the gestures, the HOT. Damnation, Jensen is working it. HUZZAH!

I agree; Jared seemed to strike a better balance in this episode. Better direction, maybe? I don't know, but whatever he was doing, keep it up, Jarpad! His injury and subsequent slimming down is really working for Sam at this stage. In the scene before the smoke bomb made it's big entrance (with Dean at the piano and a long-ish shot of Sam,) the contrast between Dean's cool/hot demeanor and perfectly coiffed hair with Sam's bruised, gaunt face and rumpled clothes...really hit home how tough this is gonna be on them both, when Dean is Dean again.

Personally, I think Dean let himself be taken by Sam. Holy water kicks demon ass, no doubt, but demon!Dean has an MO of being surprisingly more thinky than the real McCoy. He goes for the long game, if he suspects it'll make for the most a.) damage and b.) fun for him. Personally, I don't think there's much old Dean in there at all. I don't think he "cares" so much as he couldn't be arsed to bother, sometimes. I LIKE THIS VERY MUCH.

I'm digging the feel of this season better, too! Is it me, or do the colors seem less saturated? I so crave early seasons' cinematography. Bring back that dusky American Gothic vibe again. Oh, and better Sam hair. I'd give my left tit for early Season Eight hair...I will whine about this forever. Amen.

I so crave early seasons' cinematography. Bring back that dusky American Gothic vibe again I read a great review on early scenes and how each shot was beautiful - thought through with lighting and composition to make you fall in love with show. I think they are making some strides back to that direction. The first scenes in this ep. were really beautifully shot and the lighting in the bar played up the contrasts between the brothers wonderfully. I really like seeing that someone was thinking about those things.

I tend to drift off with the various angel storylines, but, I think Cas is dying, not because HIS grace is fading, but because he stole the grace he is currently using. An analogy is you have a Porshe that requires premium grade fuel, but you use regular fuel. The car will run for a while, but eventually it will gunk up the motor and basically kill the car. The stolen grace gunked up Cas's body, either because you can't use another angel's grace or because stealing it as opposed to getting it voluntarily causes the problem. Metatron indicated that he could keep feeding Cas grace and Cas would retain his angelic abilities and go for years.

I hope they don't have Sam having tortured humans to find Dean, because how would they know how to find him? Dean's a demon. Demons don't let a ton of information out to humans. If a demon vacates the body of their meatsuit, we have been told that the person only has patches of memory. So if Sam catches up with a demon who either leaves the body or "goes to sleep" torturing the person would do no good. Not only would it make Sam fairly evil, it would also make him stupid.

Thanks! That makes sense about the grace. I would like to know (once and for all) if Jimmy is actually dead. One has to assume he is, but I don't think it's ever really been confirmed.

And I seriously hope they don't make Sam out to be a human torturer either. I mean, he has tortured demons (who are actually meat suits), so in that respect he has already tortured humans - though, not directly. I don't think we'd ever see him torture a vacated meat suit (unless they are really damn serious about making Sam some sort of monster), because as you say - it wouldn't do a lot of good and I would never, ever believe Sam would go that far.

I still worry though what they are planning for him. Unless we've already seen the worst...

Good call on the flamingos!

We're getting mixed signals, but I think there's still a little bit of Dean in there.

Yay flamingos!

And, I gotta say, at the moment I don't think there's much of Dean in there at all. As in and of the caring Dean. I think he really means to "play" with Sam - and not in any way that will be nice. though, I will grant you, the fact that he hasn't already killed Sam might say something (though, so far, Dean isn't just randomly killing people. He seems to be controlling that fairly well - that might be the little bit of Dean that's still in there…).

What doesn't wash with me is believing he's been hunting Dean all his life. Like really? It's taken this long to find him?

Well, he says he's been preparing all his life, he probably hasn't been tracking Dean for all this time (like, he wasn't stalking Dean from Iraq). I think he meant that learning how to take Dean was his motivation for all these years of violence.

It seems like a far too easy way to capture Dean. I was discussing this on twitter and it could be argued that maybe Dean wanted be caught by Sam and didn't fight him or try and escape.

Yeah, I don't know that it was a conscious strategy, but I lean toward thinking that if Dean didn't on some level want to be caught, he didn't have to stand around and converse with Sam in the bar, or let himself get caught up in a long beat-down with Cole. It could probably be equally explained by his impulse control issues, which have gotten that much more of a hold of him since getting the Mark, but he's got pretty good self-protective instincts, so I'm leaning toward thinking he's had his fun and wants to play with Sam now.

I was worried that he didn't pick up that Cole was following him (and "let" him go), but I am going to go with last episode's explanation and that is Sam is so off his game he's not as alert as he usually is.

That works for me too. Or he just didn't think he had the time to care about Cole, given how long he's been looking for even a slight lead on Dean.

so I'm leaning toward thinking he's had his fun and wants to play with Sam now.

*guh* that does send shivers down my spine…

I think it's a good point though. I have the feeling if Dean really didn't really want to get caught he would have made sure he didn't get trapped. Though, I think Cole was actually a real surprise to both of them so I think he chatted to Sam because he enjoyed playing, but if Cole hadn't have interrupted Sam would be on the losing end of a fight. I truly think Dean thought he could take on both Sam and then Cole - he's just that cocky. I'm thankful he's captured now though now we get to see what happens between Sam and Dean...

I thought it was one of the strongest episodes we've had in years. Loved almost every second (but the angel story is enough to make me snooze.) Cole is a little dick, I wanted Sam to kick his ass but he's still at a disadvantage so D!D took the liberty (and enjoyed it thoroughly lol.)

I saw the flamingo pics on twitter, didn't realize they came from your journal! Good eye with spotting the similarities of M!S Sam and Now!Sam and the differences in Jared are quite startling with his weight loss. Poor broken wing *pets him*

Sam is determined, once again (finally) to find *check* and now fix/cure his brother *hopes to check that box next week*

Demon!Dean this epi compared to last epi is like night and day and this is what I wanted to see from the character. Jensen has gone to new heights to bring him to life, I'm in awe.

Jared's portrayal of heartbroken brother is breaking MY heart. He does angst so well and he's stretching his (loooong) legs with it. Outstanding!

Next week looks to be a pinnacle in their situation, can't wait to see what happens.

Oh yes. I put them on tumblr then made a link on my twitter. Maybe someone linked them from tumblr…

Sam is SO thin! Whaaaa…I hope Jared manages to bulk up. But wow - it works so well for Sam.

and now fix/cure his brother *hopes to check that box next week*

Please please! Oh god…I won't cope if he's not a major part of saving Dean…

Ack! And then we have to see what kind of fall out Carver wants from all this. It couldn't possibly be as simple of Sam saves Dean and they joint together to fight monsters. Far too bloody simple…

This episode has made me SO happy! For all the reasons. Yes I could niggle and find stuff to worrit about but "I think this is some of Jensen's best performances we've seen." YES. And Sammy. And the way Jared delivered that you're my brother and I've come to take you home brought tears to my eyes - which made Dean's mocking of it so much more effective.

I noticed the flamingos!! Also - the stars... I'm sure they've used those before too. Mmmm

So much love for this episode...

Oh yes! The stars are from The Starburst Motel in Long Distance Call. (I meant to put that…). I love the mash up from past room dividers. :))

Oooh, edit! I thought I'd double check that (going from memory) and the stars are the same, but not on a divider. Hmmm, makes me wonder if we've seen it somewhere else. Now I'm gonna have to look...

I haven't been this appreciative of an angel scene since S4.  Cas said what we've been yelling about for a couple of seasons now.  Geez, I can't stand Metatron. Ugh.  Anytime he wants to head to another galaxy, I'll pay for the rocket fuel to send him on his way.

Dean, Dean, Dean…..there isn't much left, is there? Especially if the car is trashed.  The blonde chick would have been dead if the ex hadn't shown up and presented a better, easier, F U to Crowley.  I'm so glad the show didn't go there.  And his sardonic, smirky little face….Jensen's rocking it.  I like this so much more than Dean on a slaughtering rampage.  He's just. Doesn't. Care.

Cole put the nail in his sympathy coffin with the kneecapping bit. The fight scene with Dean was awesome, especially the gun disarming.

There's no way Crowley destroyed the blade. He's just biding his time.

I'm really looking forward to next week. I think it's the episode that Jensen directed and the first one they shot so it will be interesting to see how they decided to play this Sam and Dean right out of the gate. They gave Jensen a pretty important episode this time around if it is his.

I'm disappointed they didn't go there. Thus far Dean hasn't done anything that can't be walked back. He's killed demons, which he does anyway. He told Ann Marie that he wasn't looking for a long term relationship, which is actually BETTER than telling a girl he was a producer to get her into bed, and WAY better than how he handled the celibacy leader when he talked her into going to bed with him. He beat up a guy who was treating Ann Marie badly. He tried to push it with the stripper and beat up her bouncer, but he didn't rape her that we know of. He killed the guy who was going to kill his wife. He didn't take care of the Impala. Oh, and he called Ann Marie a skank. None of that is much worse than how many men treat women. Other than not taking care of the car, he hasn't even done that much that is OOC. With the big notice that Sam may be more of monster than Dean, I can easily see them having Sam have done stuff that can't be walked back from, while Dean, plays "I'm oh so guilty so don't make me feel worse" while beating up on Sam for whatever Sam has done. Basically so far we have not had a moment that parallels Sam killing the nurse in Lucifer Rising and that does bother me.

Great write-up! I love your observation about the flamingos, that's great. It's nice to know that someone in this new crew of writers has watched/remembers earlier seasons.

I'm also interested to know what Dean's redemption path is going to look like... Keep up the detailed reviews, please, for those of us who are too wary to watch now. :) (Unfortunately not all of us enjoy Dean threatening Sam.)

When have they ever let us into Sam's head, though? :/

Thanks!

It's nice to know that someone in this new crew of writers has watched/remembers earlier seasons.

Sure is. And as that was a Carver episode I'd say he might have had a say in it. Maybe…

I'm also interested to know what Dean's redemption path is going to look like... Keep up the detailed reviews, please, for those of us who are too wary to watch now. :)

That's if they give him a redemption path. I am still not convinced that it won't be Sam somehow who has to "redeem" himself. Believe me, if that happens I will give plenty of warning for the language that may appear on my journal! I'm not going to speculate too much on that yet. I'll see what they end up making Sam do to save Dean (again, assuming it will Sam to save him).

When have they ever let us into Sam's head, though? :/

Not recently, that's for sure. Though, when we do get to see inside Sam's head we literally get to see inside it - Levee Breaks, The Man Who Knew too Much and I Think I'm Going to Like it Here. I think because we didn't get much POV last season (and what we did had very little to do with his possession) it feels FOREVER since we've seen it Let's hope S10 chances that.

Hell yes to everything you said! I was desperate for some Sam and Dean interaction, and when it came, it delivered and I was terrified but in a satisfied glued-to-the-screen kind of way!

Compared with last week, I feel way more exited and where we're heading. I'm not sure if it's because I was spoiler free this week, but whatever it is, it's working for me

And also, I loved that snot rocket girl! I could just put her in my pocket - she was that adorable! And what is it with these cameos making such a impact this season?! I wonder who will be next... ;)

First time ever I've not watched show on the following day, but internet problems set me back so badly yesterday, I thought I'd hang on and watch the show today rather than late last night and I'm ever so glad I did, I really enjoyed it again, spoiler free, totally, I'm not even reading reaction posts from anyone not on my flist, I just don't want to know anything from the extremes of either side, both sides have driven me away from the show in the past.

Show direction has made me very happy, I really enjoyed this week's Dean, much more than last week, I felt he'd really perfected that chilling charm and breaking free from Crowley was excellently done. I don't think there's any of Dean's humanity or empathy left, but he's still very recognisable as Dean, which is a hard narrow line, but one they're treading well for me. I much prefer this off leash Dean following his instincts without his conscience than last week's bender, this time around you could see human Dean's motives and life choices, just totally skewed by the demon inside.

Angels are still boring, but as you said there were a couple of scenes in there that needed saying, pity I still have that nasty taste in my mouth from last week's slaying of another innocent human, but maybe now Castiel is facing his own death he will look on slaughtering angels who are already in a human host with a little more compassion.

I like that the possibility of curing of a demon is out there right now, I worry though about what they'll expect Sam to confess to this time! Maybe it's the shoulder injury that's led to so many blows, but it's a shame to see Cole getting the better of Sam. Cole isn't working for me age wise at all, bloke does not look, what? 24? Am I right there or did I miss something? That kind of ruins it a bit, especially with all the training and tours over seas and a wife and kid, I get the time line can't go back too far, but it's off and as such, disconcerting in ways, but I can get past that. Especially if they keep up those fight scenes, brilliant work at showing what a great hunter Dean has always been, added to the strength and viciousness of the demon it made for some thrilling scenes. Sadly they can't do that with Sam, we know Sam's just as good, Dean rates him as deadly and I trust Dean - or rather I did! :)

**fingers crossed** So far, so good, but there are storms ahead and many, many pitfalls on the horizon, but I'm hopeful.

The actor who plays Cole was born in 1975. Jensen was born in 1978. So yeah, the casting for Cole to be 24 is interesting, if I'm being diplomatic, and downright off, if I'm being honest. It's not even like Travis Aaron Wade is one of those actors who look younger than they are.

EEEEE!!!

I am so happy to be liking this season! I really thought I might be out entirely, but this is really solid stuff. The Cole story is interesting to me, demonish!Dean is chilling and fascinating, and Sam being bruised and battered and persistent and stubborn is my jam.

100% agree on the awfulness of Metatron, though - I literally want to leave the room when he's onscreen. I was so hoping Cas would just kill him right then.

And good catch on the flamingoes!

J2 really knocked it our of the park in this ep! And Jensen is having so much fun with demon!Dean. And Jared's hurt, dedicated, determined Sam was so fitting!

This ep made me slightly interested in the angel storyline because it looks like they could explore similar themes that the boys' storyline dealt with in the recent seasons. Free will, the lenghts you'd go to to save your loved one... and I feel that there's potential there.

And the flamingos made me so happy! There were lawn ornament flamingos in "Hell House" in front of Ed and Harry's trailer and I found them hilarious, so now they always remind me of that. :)

Thanks for that link! And wow - and entry from 2007! Great to see all those details. That flamingo is awesome - someone in the show obviously likes flamingos :D.

I like that the angel story seems to be highlighting the theme that they might be tackling this season. Where the boys might not be able to actually have this conversation at least we can get to see what they should be talking about. Reminds me of that episode last season with the Ghost Facers - they used their story to say something about Sam and Dean's.

First of all: No hurting teh Hottie(s)!!
*glares*
- That's why I'm definitely NEVER EVER will become a fan of Cole, the coward. Very impressive, IMO, to beat up a bound [and handicaped] Sam.
Those scenes were hard for me to watch and I really, really hoped that the Deamon would beat him up at the end of the eppy (one or two broken limbs inclusive) at least - but no. He only patted his shoulder = sooo demon-like...
*rolls eyes*

Plus, no, my dear Mme Vidding Queen, I can't agree with you on what you wrote above, " I was worried that he didn't pick up that Cole was following him (and "let" him go), but I am going to go with last episode's explanation and that is Sam is so off his game he's not as alert as he usually is."
- Sorry, doesn't work for me. Wer're still talking about Sam Winchester here. One of the two best hunters in the world.
For me that's nothing but poor writing (again!). And I still don't like it, when they make Our Boys look stupid.
*grrr*

Good. That was me ranting. Next is me squeeing...^^ Because of Jensen's stellar performance. I have to re-watch the eppy again tonight, because I'm sure I missed alot because of too much drooling everytime, the Deamon hit my screen... ;)
*fangurlsqueeee*

Finally, Cas. It's definitely time for him to reunite with his friends, Sam & Dean. Hanna bores me to death and please, Mr Carver, please don't let the whiney Boogertron annoy us for another season. - Not to forget, the Winchesters still owe him one or two...
*nods**nods*

That's why I voted for 'OK' at your poll, my dear. YAY! for the two flamingo pics and my last words are for poor Baby:
No worries, sweetie; your boys will clean you up properly very soon, promised. ;)

But I like hurt hotties!!!

Though yes, anyone who beats up a defenceless and injured Sam gets our wrath! I will find it hard to be sympathetic to him if we are ever supposed to be (like Gadreel was for me…). I liked that Dean let him go though - much nastier.

One of the two best hunters in the world.

Very true! Though at least this time there are some (almost plausible) reasons why he could miss a couple of things. Though I do prefer it when they don't dumb down the characters in order to forward the story.

I figure Cas will be back with Sam and Dean in the next episode - or fairly soon. I don't think they can keep finding reasons to keep him away. Though, I actually like Hannah (I know, one of only a handful in fandom probably).

And I seriously hope we actually SEE the boys clean the car!

Wow, this was really good. REALLY good. Is anyone writing fanfic these days? I'd really like to read some season 10 fics, if there are any to be found.

I completely agree with Jensen. Playing "this" Dean seems to have de-aged him, half a decade at least. While Sam seems to be aging in the other direction. But Jared really does do 'haggard' well. It's a little surreal because I've been watching Gilmore Girls, and Jared was such a baby. (and his acting has improved, let me tell you!)

So glad to have my show back. I skipped the Castiel/Hannah scene and am thinking maybe I should go back and actually watch it.

Thanks so much for your lovely reactions to our Show! I seriously thought I was done! :)

Wasn't it just?! Finally we're getting to see the Sam we've been made familiar with all these years (though I'm curious if they try to reconcile why he didn't bother even looking for Dean in S8. Not bothered if they don't - they might be trying to forget that too)

I've seen some fanfic around. Haven't had a chance to read any yet though.

Jared's broken shoulder has certainly assisted in him looking more haggard in these episodes. He looks so gaunt. Poor baby. And yes, Jared's acting has improved so much. Even watching early episodes you can see the difference.

The Castiel/Hannah scenes aren't too bad actually - I think the one with Metatron is very satisfying. She's got some balls at least (and thank god they didn't let her make a deal…). I'm not usually one for too much romance in my shows, but her growing fondness of Cas is rather sweet.

I seriously thought I was done! :)

I was feeling like I was done too! I'm not letting my guard down toooo much. It won't be until they reveal what Sam has actually done to find Dean that I'll be able to breath a sigh of relief (maybe). In the meantime, I've loving being able to enjoy it again! (even re-watched the eps which I haven't done for AGES!).

Sam's poor hair! (yep, I will complain about this until they stop smoothing down the back of it..*ugh*)

LOL, I'm so glad someone else commented on this! A few people told me in comments to my review that they thought Sam's hair reflected his mental state well in this episode, that he's run down and trying to get his brother back that he doesn't care how it looks. But would that really make him smooth the back of it down like that? Heh ;)

As for Cas dying, that's kind of how I see it... that his vessel is dead and his grace is fading. I wonder if they will let us know for sure, but that's basically my assumption now.

I liked this episode a bit more than the first one definitely. I enjoyed it. :)

Yeah, I'd like to be able to meta that one but I think it's just a bad cut. That smoothed down look at the back (like it's been blown dry) is just not right. HOWEVER! I will take this Sam with bad hair over early S8 Sam with awesome hair anyway. Of course, I'd like this Sam with S8 hair, but we can't always get what we want.

Other than Sam's hair, I'm really enjoying the season so far...
