What did ya think of that one?

[Poll #1998747]

I felt like I had been transported back in time (it reminded me of Hookman and Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things). Aside from the lol!canon with them talking about what Dean would do if he died and Sam drove the car (because - um, he's actually already done that. Twice I think), it was the kind of episode that reminded me of why I fell in love with this show in the first place. Clever Sam, food loving!Dean, brothers working seamlessly together, a MoTW that subtly reflected the boys situation, LOTS of SamnDean, heaven and hell free and a fun (and rather modern!) twist on a ghost. Damn you SPN! Stop dragging me back in! (or not. I love it when I love it...*g*).

Oh. Ok. But I thought Sam said he assumed Dean was dead when he went to Purgatory? And the same when he went to hell. But maybe I'm reading it wrong. Perhaps Dean was referring to when he actually dies for absolutely fair dinkim reals (and I know it was foreshadowing the conversation at the end when Dean seemed to accept he is going to actually die at the end of all this).

I did like the conversation before that about driving the car to honour the dead (or something along those lines). Perhaps Dean will do what he did in S3 and try and prepare Sam to accept his upcoming dead. Interesting parallel.

Sam might've assumed Dean was dead at the time, but he obv knows now that Dean wasnt.

Your point was that the conversation in this episode contradicted existing canon, which it doesnt.

Fair enough.

Yes it does. Dean died and his soul went to hell. Sam buried his body. It doesn't get much deader than that.

You are correct about the second time, in purgatory.

dead maybe (the definition is rather flexible in the SPN verse) but the point was Dean wasn't hanging around as a ghost. So he couldnt have haunted Sam and the Impala.

Yes but being a ghost is not the point of contention. The question was Sam driving the Impala while Dean was dead. Yes, he absolutely did.

Sam said: What are you saying, if you died and I drove your car, you'd kill me?

Sam knows that in the past instances, Dean couldn't haunt and kill him. So he is talking about future possibilities. So - no contradiction with canon.

We'll have to agree to disagree then.

Dean did die. Sam did drive his car. There is no need for a theoretical statement here, and IMHO it diminishes the meaning of past events to gloss over it even if it was intentional. Which is debatable. So for me, yes, lapse in canon and a missed opportunity for emotional depth.

*jumps in on convo* Personally, I saw it as misfired joke. It's something Dean said back in, um S1 I think (faith?) about Sam driving his car. As a lot of that ep seemed to focus on Dean reclaiming his former self, I think it was possibly harking back to that. Extremely difficult to sallow, considering how heartbreaking Dean's deaths have been for Sam. It also makes sense with what they've been doing with Sam this season - him getting past, or forgetting what's gone before. As much that's happened to him recently (and in the past) isn't being written into his character story, him saying something that "forgets" what's happened before is consistent. I'm trying to fanon that with Sam's attempt to move on (and helps keep him sane *g*).

Joking about Dean dying though - *ouch*. I think dean's recent "Death" is still so fresh in everyone's mind.

Dean did die at the end of season 3. His soul went to Hell. Sam buried his body. That's dead. Crossroads deal and shredded by hellhound = dead. Sucked to Purgatory = not dead.

Let me quote from Dream a Little Dream of Me: "You're going to DIE. And this is what you're going to become. "

Every tally of Dean's deaths always includes the hellhound mauling.
