60:If you could change just one thing about the series, what would it be?

Just one?! Hee... There is one thing and it's probably controversial, but I wish they had never introduced Castiel. It's lead to years of angels and demons, years of trying to find ways to power down Cas so he can't instantly fix things, years of finding story lines that make sense for him and fandom in fighting that has created so much nastiness that's it's sometimes better to be out of it. I often imagine the series without him and suddenly so many other story possibilities open up (and the introduction of many new seasonal characters). Nothing against the lovely Misha, but unfortunately the character is so past his used by date that it's weighing the show down (personal opinion of course *g*).

Ack. Hope that didn't offend. It is what it is though, and I'm glad there are fans who adore the character and get a lot of fun out of him. :)

Ah now, you've put your finger on something there but I don't think the problem was Castiel and the angels as such - it was making Misha a series regular that constrained them. I mean, having angels in the storyline gave us some superb characters - like Zachariah, Uriel, Gabriel... But making Misha a permanent fixture was what then led to the subsequent dullness of angels, and a mish mash of roles for Castiel that still haven't found him a logical fit in the story. Though I like the idea of Cas and Sam finding some kind of relationship in searching for help for Dean.

Like so many threads, though, they followed the most shiny ones for too little time.

Yes. I think that's more the thing. Castiel's presence in S4 was interesting and fit beautifully in all those really interesting angels during that season. By making him a regular I think it weaken the nature of him as an angel. I mean, I think some of what they have done has been interesting. I mostly like the exploration of his humanness, but I also really loved the kick ass, imposing Cas from when he first appeared. Maybe rather than changing that he never appeared, changing that they kept him on so long. I'm not sure why they haven't spun the character off actually - I think he'd have a huge following (maybe? Not sure if part of that is the pairing with Dean…?).
