Vid notes:
This song was first performed by Nine Inch Nails and later covered by Johnny Cash. I love his rendition and when I was tossing up whether to actually make this vid I heard it on the radio 3 times in one day AND happened to see the Johnny Cash music video, (which is very simple but powerful) and I figured it was a sign and went for it. :)
Angst vids are always my biggest challenge, but one that I thorougly enjoy. For this one it was primarily the lyrical interpretation. Some were quite straight forward but something like "the needle tears a hole" doesn't strictly relate to Dean as he's not doing drugs, so I chose to interpret the "needle" as Sam and the hole he's tearing is through Dean's heart, which then led to "the old familiar sting" and I saw this as being a feeling Dean has felt before and asssociated that with time when Sam has either betrayed him or has shown his darker side. I also wanted to link all those moments with shots that were associated blood (which appears again later in vid). There's more of course, but I won't bore you with the details! :)
I finished this before Season 5 started and worried that it might be a bit dated for Dean now, but in fact I think Dean is still carrying the guilt of not being there for Sam when he needed him most. Well, to me anyway.
No money made but feedback is gratefully accepted (and treasued in fact). If you do watch and are unsure on what I am trying to say with a particular interpretation feel free to ask me about it. :)

Date: 2009-10-15 07:40 am (UTC)Hee! And I'm more than happy to share how I've done any of that. Most of it comes down to cross dissolves and playing around in "colour correct". :) (if there's anything in particular just let me know!)
Thanks so much again. Really. It's made my day. :D

Date: 2009-10-15 11:19 am (UTC)I've been trying to do more experimenting with what my vidding prog is capable of technically as opposed to straight cutting, I use Serif which not many other vidders have so it's hard to find tutorials about it, so I'm very much always in a trial and error stage with pushing to find out what I can do with it, it's obviously not as adept as something like Vegas, but I'm sure there are more things it can do but I always end up in a mess, so if you've ever got a free moment? Or - you know half a lifetime! *G*
I'd really love to hear about how you did that stuttering effect into B/W at around 0.22? Maybe that's something I could try and replicate? Is it the same thing at around 0.29 or again at 0.40 and at other times, when Sam is feeding off the blood etc?
From 0.41 on the B/W Sam you seem to have a blurring around the edges there that carries through a few clips, I think that appears again around the 2.10 mark and aqain later - it adds such a dream like quality to the scenes and I'd love to hear how you achieved that too - it might not be something I could do, but I hope you don't mind me asking.
I have a few colour correcting tools, which I'm sure will work better with more trial and error, but right now I'm trying to concentrate on pushing my actual editing skills and I'll get back to the colouring later, what impresses me most about this is that every colour change seems so flawless and necessary and that I'm sure is a skill I'll never grasp!
God, so many questions, I'm a pain in the arse I know, but don't worry if you don't have the time to answer them, I know you have family visiting and time is short - but thanks ever so much. *hugs*

The effects at .22,.29 and .40 are deceptively easy and yes, you'd be able to do it I'm sure on your vidding program (hmmm - never heard of Serif I have to say).
In fact it is not an effect as such just a transition. So. The first clip is "normal", say with normal colouring and the clip next to it is changed sightly. I enlarge the clip very slightly (so from 100 to say 105 or 110) - a slight zoom in other words, then colour it differently, say B&W then I put a cross dissolve transition in. That's it. Dead simple. For an added effect I might enlarge the clip a bit more and then move it to the left or right. I think that's what I did at .28. It give that slight ghosting effect.
Though the trick is to split the clip. (It has to be the same footage) So. Take a longish clip, cut it in two and add that transition between the cut. You'll have to experiment to see how that works I think to get the idea.
Also, to change a clip from say full colour to B&W you can key frame the change very slowly over time, or (as I mostly do!) split the clip in two, make the second clip B&W and add a long cross dissolve between the two clips.
The blur is an effect in Final Cut called Vignette. So I just apply that and play with the different options - of which there are a few. It puts a blur around the edge and that's all. It's a cool effect. :) But, yeah, you'd have to see if your program had that.
I colour correct all my clips - I always lighten them and most of the time I boost the saturation unless I want to create a different mood - or desaturate totally.
Hope that makes some sense! :) If not ask me to clarify and I can.
And you're not a pain. As you can tell, I love talking about this stuff! :D :D

Date: 2009-10-15 01:41 pm (UTC)Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I'm pretty sure I'm understanding you about the ghosing and jump - yep, think I can give that a try now, will experiment for sure as it gives an extra movement inside the clip and I'm really smitten with that idea.
Yep, I do have the keyframing options, so that's something!
The vignette thing I don't think I have, but now you've explained it, I'm wondering if I can get that same effect with masking? Two exact clips on two tracks - top clip blurred with oval type mask to show the exact clip underneath? Hmmm... I'm a gonna have to play with that one too and see if I can get something similar. *G*
You're an angel hon, *hugs*

Date: 2009-10-15 02:33 pm (UTC)I have the first one done and IN the new vid!!
**does the happy dance**
Hey, it goes so fast I don't think many will notice it, but it's what I wanted and I know it's there and how to do it in the future! :))
And - yep I have quite good control over masks with this prog, they have a few ready made shapes but I'd rather make my own as I go along and those ones are pretty well shaded out so no hard edges.
Ha! 30 seconds nearly done - two and a half minutes to go...I might just finish this for Christmas at this rate! **giggles**
