Dec. 3rd, 2015 11:08 pmI fucking ADORED that episode. I cried (real tears!) for the first time in ages. I realise that's because I am Sam sympathetic (I've decided not to call myself a Sam!girl because I fucking adore Dean too, but I DO sympathise with Sam massively) and that episode spoke to me on levels I can't render into words at the moment.
I have so much I want to say about that ep (about Dean's characterisation, Sam's headspace, Sully and other important stuff) but I can't at the moment. But I will - at some point.
In short - great acting, directing and script. So much heart and soul poured into it all.

Date: 2015-12-03 05:00 pm (UTC)The goofiness felt earned and somehow true to the entire run of the show, and despite being a Colin Ford fan, I really loved the dorky exuberance of this little Sam.
Is it just me, or is season 11 turning out to be...kind of...good?

Date: 2015-12-03 07:49 pm (UTC)- Kids who look like they've 10 years old, playing with imaginary friends. Isn't the "imaginary friend" stage around 4-ish?
- John and Dean leaving Sam (who had just learned that monsters were real a few months prior) ALONE.
- A 20-year-old actor playing 13-year-old Dean (when 2 years ago he played 16-year-old Dean).
- The kid who played Sam looks nothing like Colin Ford, the established Young Sam.
I did like the actor who played Sully and his interaction with the boys. Loved the boys in their "Bert and Ernie" sweaters, Dean's reaction to the mermaid, and his response to Sam's loneliness.
Was this the high point of S11? Not for me. I thought "Baby" was terrific, worthy of many re-watches, but not this one.

Date: 2015-12-03 10:50 pm (UTC)I also accept those issues. I thought Sam was too young for an imaginary friend - but given the context I let that wash over me.
But totally agree about young Dean! Such a shame actors have to grow up. Clearly they still wanted to use him, but he's getting out of the age range. I still think he did a great job of portraying Dean - but yeah. Too old.
I really liked the kid playing Sam. I mean yeah, he's no Colin and Colin is a very hard act to follow, but I thought the casting was solid. He had the right yeps and emotion. I credit that to Dick for the directing. But I know this young!Sam didn't work for many.
Sully was awesomesauce and it would be wonderful to see him back. He worked so well with both Jared and Jensen. Such a lovely character too.
Baby would be a high point for me only it felt like a stand alone and not part of the current SPN 'verse. In that - it almost felt like an alternate reality. It shouldn't have done, but as we were seeing quite a lot of "Jared and Jensen" and not SamnDean, it didn't feel "real" (weird way of putting it I know). I definitely put it on my re-watch list!

Date: 2015-12-03 11:59 pm (UTC)I loved how Sam opened up to Sully about the cage, that whole scene really made me think about the magnitude of what this means to Sam, about what 'God' is telling Sam to do. I want Sully back. I might need him to come back for Sam. Come back Sully!!!
I think Richard did a wonderful job, and I hope he comes back for more.
\o/ I love to love you Show!!!

Date: 2015-12-04 03:07 am (UTC)All the incest innuendo...I'm still pretty new to this fandom, so I'm a little innocent in this regard, but didn't the references feel a little intense? The family shower joke, yeah, but also the Bert & Ernie reference? Didn't Dean already mention that B&E are gay? So, D&S are presenting as a gay couple in this ep? Okay, I guess, but obviously this is a cover they're pretty used to.
This whole ep felt more like something out of Season 1 (Bugs!) Again, is this a conscious choice?

Date: 2015-12-04 10:22 am (UTC)The wincest stuff was fun. :) I have no idea if it's deliberate but I gotta think they know what they're doing…;)
A lot of the eps have had a S1 feel about them lately. I would like to think that's been deliberate. :)

Date: 2015-12-04 10:28 am (UTC)Everyone gave 1000% here, RS did one hell of a job with the directing, it could have been pretty hammy, but instead it really reached out and gave a whole new level of understanding of all his characters and the clever filming and editing was a joy to watch. Sully and his friends were instantly loveable and amongst the horror of their lives how great it is to know there is still something out there that isn't going to rip your head off, although they did manage to rip my heart out just a little.
Even the experienced hunters not knowing who these creatures were was totally believable and I hope to see more of this kind of thing rather than sudden back doors into purgatory and hell. The brothers don't exist in a time bubble, so using their past experiences to build stories on agrees with me, makes them real, but only when it's done well and organically.
It was nice to have a storyline that focused on their leads but still gave side characters a good chunk of the action, there's definitely a better vibe between the brothers this season, I feel more settled because of that, I know you've had trouble with some of the banter being rather on the cruel side, but it hasn't been like that for me, although some of the old arguments are still there, gone is the vitriolic spite that used to be behind it, for me they're back to having each other's backs and I hope this continues. I can forgive their destroying the world to save each other when it comes from a place of love and protection and their screwed up lives.

Date: 2015-12-05 05:01 am (UTC)I've seen some screen caps of the next ep and I am a little worried (mostly with were it's going and the writers who are doing it). But I'll wait and see what happens before I get too worried. :)

Date: 2015-12-05 04:39 am (UTC)I really liked it too - there were bits that didn't strike exactly right for me, but they were overshadowed by the many things that were absolutely awesome. Jared, Jensen and Nate were all stupendous. :)
