12.04 squee (I mean reaction/review)

Welcome to new writer Davy Perez. Clearly he'd done his homework. Not only did he know about past events but he had an understanding of the characters and how to create the essential "feel" of Supernatural. Well done!


10 things I Loved About You:

1. "Then" flashing back to S2 and Sam's powers and the special children and and and...*hyperventilates* I thought I had died and gone to heaven (the one with Winchesters in it). Ok, so it gave away the MoTW, but I don't care. It was great to see. <3

2. Boys in costumes! How GORGEOUS did they look?! I swear to god they are getting younger (and Dean looked so damn cuddly in that sweater he was wearing <33).

3. CREEEEEEPY story! It was highly disturbing and scary. I was biting my nails! I love it when I feel that way during an episode.

4. Dean trying to cope with Mary leaving. I love the way the whole episode gently teased this out. I thought Dean's man-pain was going to play out over a few episodes but it was addressed sensitively and then beautifully resolved. He carries so much pain with him in regards to his family. It was nice to see his smile about it in the end. Jensen does that quiet, internalised pain so well.

5. Sam. I mean...SAM! OMG. Not only did we get lashings of Sam POV we also got him connecting to the victim (like in the good ole days). I still can't believe he referred to his visions and powers - I never in my wildest dreams thought they'd be brought up again. SO GOOD!

6. I was thrilled that Sam got to say "God doesn't care what life you live. Trust me". It nearly made me tear up because it reminded me that God allowed Sam to suffer in hell - God allowed a good, decent man to suffer for a reason we never really found out. His hurt and anger was so clear - once again Jared knocked it out of the park.

7. BROTHER MOMENTS! So many little brother moments throughout the episode. I love Sam's gentle attempt to get Dean talking. He doesn't let up - he knows Dean is hurting and knows that it will help him to talk about it. As usual, Dean stoically soldiers on, but eventually he opens up and shares his concerns. I also love that Sam understands Mary's decision (perhaps because he's had to walk away himself a few times?). <3

8. Sam in peril! Shuddup. I know Sam in peril usually means Samsel-in-distress, but at least it gave him a chance to connect with Magda and help her in the end (and we got worried!Dean and some "Sammy"s). But also, poor Sam! How much trauma does this poor guy have to endure?! He had to watch Magda being abused and then witness two cold blooded murders. :(

9. BMoL lurking in the background. I can't recall the last time I was genuinely revolted and scared for the "big bad" (maybe since Mark P's Lucifer). I am a little nervous about the way this will eventually play out but I'm liking how cold and ruthless they are - because it's a great contrast to the compassion of the Winchesters.

10. Dean teasing Sam about "loving" Vince. Dean struggling over the gate while Sam walks around it. All those lovely little moments.

And

11. EVERYTHING ELSE! (seriously, I can't think of anything I didn't like \o/) I love that after the episode I was left with that wonderful warm fuzzy feeling that only SPN can give me. *G*


Seriously. I could wallow in eps like these for ages. I immediately re-watched it (rare for me these day). I like that they have nothing major between them - no secrets. Neither of them is "other" (possessed or otherwise). And they're talking. <333

Me, too! It was so heartbreaking.

Lol, when Dean struggled over that little fence I remembered scenes from early epis of them athletically climbing and jumping over really high fences and caught myself thinking "darn, they're getting old". haha ;D

A wonderful episode for sure, leaving a warm feeling in my heart, too. ^_^

And yes! I love that comparison of Dean scrambling over the gate compared to his S1 leaping over high fences! He does comedy so well! :D

I've read that 12x09 will be the mid season episode, which would fit with the general pattern of past seasons.

Also I doubt that it will be the mid season finale as according to interviews with Dabb 12x12 is meant to be

a highly Castiel centric episode, which delves into aspects of his past we have never seen before.

Ah, I wondered when that episode was going to air.

So ep 12.09 is the mid season finale? Funny how I think it's around ep 11 or 12 but looking back it is ep 9 or 10. Do we know who's written that one yet? Though perhaps I really don't want to know. The more I see what other writers do compared to The Duo the more I dread their episodes.

The mid season finale is supposed to have been written by Andrew Dabb :) Most of the spoilers I've gotten as a result of a google search for "supernatural season 12 spoilers" have come from here http://ibelieveinthelittletreetopper.tumblr.com/post/147242139088/supernatural-season-12-spoiler-sheet. However, they don't reference their sources so while their past episode spoilers have seemed to be pretty accurate I would add the disclaimer to be wary of the information as some of it appears to be informed guesswork based on previews seasons. For instance they list 12x08 as the mid season finale even though I've seen 12x09 listed elsewhere and that seems to fall in better with the patterns of previous seasons.

But assuming everything is accurate, in terms of writers (which it has been so far), according to this user the writers for the following episodes will be

Agreeing to everything here. This was such an awesome, creepy episode! The Max Miller ep is one of my all-time favorites, so it was good to see it mirrored here.

I kept wondering why Beth thought Magda had died. In the Real World, everyone from social workers to police would be involved if a child died like that. I've worked in social service agencies and schools as well as the city and there's no way that could really happen. There'd be a body, a coroner's report, a BODY, a death certificate, A BODY, etc.

Am I missing something here?

Yup yup yup - I loved that they finally looked at some of the past in the way we fans have been doing for years, that they addressed some old storylines and recognised that they still matter - it annoys me when these kind of things are ignored because it's sloppy writing. I loved all the digs at religion, because dammit, of course the Winchesters would be utterly cynical by now, knowing God and the devil personally as they do.

And the shallow fan girl in me was squealing at the Priest disguises and all the broments, serious and funny.

Yay Priest Winchesters! The aliases made me laugh out loud, although I may be getting reference wrong: was it Penn and Deniro who pretended to be priests in "We're Not Angels"? Even if not, it makes me laugh!

I love how contagious your squee is, because I was squeeing all the way through the episode, and I'm, delighted to hear that you loved it as much as I did!!!

So much to adore; the fact that Sam talked about his powers, that we saw some sweet young boys, the lovely bro mos (I loved Sam walking around the gate so much, it really made me laugh!), how creepy and disturbing the case was, and yeah, just all of it!!! LOVED IT!!!

The new writer did a wonderful job - I hope we see more of him!!!
