Howdy all,
It's Sunday night. I've had a bit of a huge vidding day (my favourite days!) though my brain has gone to mush a bit.. but sooo much fun!
I've just done a little flist tidy (my first ever!). It shouldn't really effect any of you guys cause it's mostly people I friended ages ago and didn't friend back and I have since, um, lost interest I suppose. The whole friending thing had me confuzzled there for a bit, but I feel like I've kind of "settled in" here and know who my friendies are.... :) *hugs you*
Having said that. If you've friended me and would like me to friend you back just drop me a line. I tend not to do that automatically anymore because I'm enjoying having a manageable sized flist. But you know, I've have discovered and met some wonderful and amazing people who have friended me and I've friended back. So pop by and say hi if you like!
I noticed that
vividcon had sign ups recently. I remember last year thinking that I'd like to be part of that... but really, I have no idea what "that" is. It seems like something for select vidders or something. I know it's a con, but yeah,... I suppose you really need to be able to attend it. (which I imagine would be awesome!) Maybe one day...
And now just a little something about awards.
I won my first acting award when I was about 18 and I remember being very embarrassed by it for some reason. And just not really understanding the whole award thing. I bitched and moaned to this guy I was going out with at the time and he said to me "just shut up and enjoy it". It was an important moment because from then on that's exactly what I did. So...
It was nice (very nice in fact) to win this award at Creative Junkyard Awards. And it wasn't just that but it was receiving a review as well. I wasn't going to post about it but then remembered what my friend said. Enjoy it!! :) It kinda amazes me how much time and effort other people put into organising these things.

That's it. I think. <3 (oooh, no it's not. I've become a little bit addicted to podfics. What a great way to catch up on some reading that I just don't really have time to sit down for. If any of you have any rec's I'd be interested. The fabulous comm
spnroundtable have had some recently and I've exhausted all those!! :D :D)

Date: 2010-03-14 02:39 pm (UTC)So glad you had a productive evening also. And you are happy with the results! \o/ It's a great feeling isn't it?
I am really looking forward to seeing these collab vids. It's great to have someone else to not only share the experience with but to also bounce ideas off of.

Date: 2010-03-14 02:09 pm (UTC)I was simultaneously DESPERATE to go and at the same time I was annoyed by the low attendance cap and terrified by what I thought was generally an "in-crowd" vibe.
But I naively charged on ahead, signing up to co-run the most controversial vid show and panel that year. I went alone, without having ever met anyone, without roommates or anything. There were definitely times when I felt awkward and left out. Lots of attendees either had groups of friends they'd known for years or were newbies with a tight-knit group that had attended for the first time together.
But, honestly, it was an amazing experience in every sense of the word. All of my fears were pretty much unfounded and I ended up having an amazing time.
People were not trying to exclude me--most of them are just as shy (or, frankly shyer) than I am. They appear to cling to their groups but it's mostly because they want to maximize time with friends they only get to see once a year, not because they aren't super friendly. The cap is set low because that's the number for which the con-team (who are all volunteers, of course) can safely guarantee the amazingly high-level of service, and that's what the venue can realistically hold. Everyone I talked to was nice. I got screaming hugs from people I'd never expected. I sang karaoke(!) with two of the most well-known VVC personalities. Dancing at Club Vivid is something I will remember for the rest of my life. I met people who I know will be friends long after I've moved on from fandom (if that ever happens).
Yes, VVC is expensive, and it's primarily an in-person-only experience. But that's pretty much the way of all cons. I hope that in the future a virtual alternative to VVC will become more prominent, but in the meantime I definitely hope that you'll consider attending someday, as I'd love to meet you!
And shake a tailfeather on the dancefloor. :D

Date: 2010-03-14 02:35 pm (UTC)It's been interesting to discover the various cons and events around the place and I get the sense that there's tremendous history surrounding VVC. Mostly from what I've read.
And by "select" I don't feel that as "elite" - I feel more that it's about vidders who have either experienced it before or have the confidence to participate for the first time. (and sign up in time it would seem!)

Hee! I can just imagine this. It makes sense that people would gravitate to people they know.
I have to say it sounds like the most wonderful thing. (especially the dancing!!! *g*) It still blows me away that such a thing exists. The celebration of vidders and vidding. \o/
Thank you so much for sharing this. I will be following along via the comm and enjoying the vids once they reach us here! :D
*hugs* (ooh and thanks for the congrats. I have to enjoy this things while I can! *g*)

Date: 2010-03-14 04:23 pm (UTC)Anyway, I can vouch for everything
Even if you can't attend, there's always a huge deluge of vids that come out in August after the con that EVERYONE can enjoy. You could even try submitting a vid and then
begask someone to tell you how it was received in front of a captive audience. The one thing I'll say about submitting to a vidding convention rather than a more general fandom convention is the audience is MUCH more attentive to vids, including serious ones. Maybe you could check out that academic conference closer to your area? That sounds like something I'd like to experience, but I don't think I'll be able to afford that this year. I know that one of the organizers attended VVC last year, and I'm pretty sure she along with others would very much like more vidding conventions to pop up in more places.Congrats on the CJA! Totally deserved because your vid is awesome!
*hugs*

I have heard talk (in fact related to that first link) that there could be one in Victoria - which is on the other side to Australia unfortunately. But I would LOVE to go. There would be so much to learn about...
*hugs* honey. Thanks again! :)
