Heads up..
Sep. 2nd, 2010 11:57 amThere's a poll re the recent FB/Twitter feature.
HERE
Will LJ listen? I suppose if enough people make their feelings known they might. They'd be wise to I reckon.
There's are lot of discontent being voiced on their announcement post also.
This link is also interesting. This shows how it could work.

Date: 2010-09-02 07:51 am (UTC)If that's the case I consider it more an issue of civic responsibility rather than corporate responsibility. If people are so inclined they already can cut & paste/copy/retype anything they have access to to wherever they want to, including my locked posts. I trust the people on my flist not to do that. So the fact that LJ's new feature will make it easier for them to do so doesn't really bother me too much, I am still trusting people not to do anything to breach my confidentiality.
Having said that, I really can't see the point of anybody wanting to crosspost to twitter or facebook, but then I don't really get the point of twitter itself.
If I am missing something (I haven't really read much about this apart from all these posts saying "Don't do it or I'll defriend you", that poll post was the first to actually provide a link to somewhere where they explain what's being proposed.

Date: 2010-09-02 08:48 am (UTC)It's the comments thing I'm against - if people want to cross post their own original posts then there nothing much I can do about it, but to actually cross post replies that are made in my journal or TO me in anyone else's journal or community that might include a quote by me and therefore spreading MY lj username all over Facebook and Twitter? NO.
I have asked, like nearly everyone else I know, that anyone posting in my journal does not cross post to Facebook and I totally trust my flist not to do that. But I'm not stepping foot in an open journal or community until this shit gets sorted.
Posted in the announcement post last night - I'm just so infuriated by this.

Date: 2010-09-02 09:00 am (UTC)Initially I thought it just meant if I posted something on LJ I could cross post it easily on FB (which, ok, I can see how that might be handy for some people), but it seems that even comments to locked posts can be posted.
That's my understanding.
For me it's more about the infiltration of FB and Twitter into LJ. I know it can be turned off - which I will be doing, but why does everything have to be connected to those to sites? As you say, if people want to cross post it's just a matter of cutting and pasting anyway.
It's a privacy issue as well. Just that it's so easy to cross post makes people nervous I think. Lots of people do stuff on LJ they really don't want anyone in the RL to see.
That's my take on it anyway.
(I don't mind the ping back idea though. If someone links, say, a vid on mine on their journal it will notify me. I have no problem with people sharing my vids around LJ).
I think I've understood it all correctly.

Date: 2010-09-02 09:11 am (UTC)And I equally have no issue if people want to cross post their own stuff to their social networking pages. I figure they probably do that anyway if they wanted to.
I just don't see LJ being anything like FB or Twitter. Each site has their own purposes. I have nothing against any of these sites. In fact I reckon they can be great fun, but I know a lot of peeps do stuff on LJ that they would prefer to keep hidden from their RL. And this just raises the potential of being found out. Plus... surely we need to have a say about where our comments should and should not be seen.
And good point about communities. This whole thing is a minefield I think.

Date: 2010-09-02 09:56 am (UTC)I've stuck something in the suggestion box over at
Hope they just turn if off on all reply comments, I really don't see the need for it.

Date: 2010-09-02 10:11 am (UTC)Is it something the comm can do? I'm not so technical about this stuff but if we can make it safer for people posting then we'll do whatever we can.

Date: 2010-09-02 10:19 am (UTC)A general post pointing out the problems with the feature being enabled when replying to locked posts would help I'm sure in the short term and long term in reassuring us posters that we're as safe as we can possibly be, I'm sure a lot who think the feature is a good idea haven't really thought it through for what it might entail for others.
I'm not even sure if the automatic feature is available on flocked posts or whether it's still an extra choice you have to make, but it would certainly help for the comm itself to ask posters not to cross replies and if it's ok with you guys I think for a while I would ask again on each of my clip posts - until things are more sorted, just to feel safe you know?
Thanks hon, thanks very much.

Date: 2010-09-02 10:23 am (UTC)Here's a link to someone who tested it.
http://heatherface.livejournal.com/1097369.html
It shows that they can't see the post, only the comment. But if it is a locked post and the comment refers to what is being said in the post (like: I'm so sorry your Grandma died.) Not cool.
They also can see the LJ user name. I know a lot of people don't want that to go around.
So yea, sucky idea the whole thing.

Date: 2010-09-02 11:41 am (UTC)I used to connect my YT account to my LJ and realised that that wasn't such a good idea. I mean, I don't really have a lot to hide. My family (as in sisters and parents) know what I do (even the porn reading!), but I would hate for my students to somehow come across it. And the more stuff is "out there" the more chances there are.
Thanks babe. <3
ETA: Hope you don't mind me adding this link to the post. xx

Date: 2010-09-02 12:59 pm (UTC)Not at all. That's why I put it here, for everybody to see. It was posted as a comment to the poll. Glad I could add some further info on this. :)
