Episode reaction 6.02
Oct. 2nd, 2010 08:10 pmInsta reaction = *PHEW* and *lets out held breath* :D
Thoughtful reaction = *I HEART my show* So many positives. But a couple of head scratches...
I need to start with those to get them out of the way..
I'll start with one major *head scratch* because I think I must have missed something. (?) Mark died didn't he?? Mark as in a member of the Campbell family? Emphasis on the word family. And all we get is Gramps "miming" to the boys what happened to him?!.. I just. *head scratch* because none of them seemed to care about his death. Now, I know they have to move the story along but wow - that moved quickly. Not even a mention of a family member's death? Which is either an indication that there really is something "wrong" here (in terms of this so called "family") or sloppy handling of that death. I figured a little bit of angst from the other family members would have been appropriate - especially with the amount of trust Sam has in them etc.
My only other real head scratch (other than Sam leaving footprints and fingerprints all over the crime scene - though, they've always done that so at least it's consistent *g*) is why Sam felt like he HAD to have Dean in on this hunt. Don't get me wrong. I LOVED that he wanted and needed Dean's help. But, I don't know.. after last week it just seemed inconsistent. A year of hunting without Dean and suddenly it's all urgency that he HAS to be involved. And because there's a baby? (though again - I LOVE that Sam would think that Dean would be perfect in handling this. *hearts* that idea to pieces). And Sam "threatening" to drive by his house. Not cool Sam. I had a moment of not liking you there for a bit... (I'll put that in to the "Sam is not entirely himself" category).
I have reconciled that by thinking Dean knows Sam is alive and therefore Sam will get Dean involved any way he can. But after the whole "you've found happiness" speech, it seemed a little odd. Or is this more of Sam's general oddness maybe?
Other than that... JOY \o/\o/
Things I adored:
More than anything.. that both boys have their own car. I know. Who'd a thought?! But the way this represents their different personalities and Sam's independence and Dean's re-awakening makes me SQUEE! I might be the only one, but I hope both boys get to keep their cars this season.
I adore that Sam's choice of car is a modern day Impala (I have no idea if it is, but it looks like one). I know there's been a lot of discussion about the car, but I think it's very Sam and exactly what he would choose. A modern day version of his previous "home". <3
Lisa = total love. This was always going to be difficult, but I think Show has handled Lisa and Dean remarkably well. One of my "hopes" for the season is that the boys catch a break. And really? Dean has with Lisa. I mean, to be told he can have the best of both worlds? That doesn't happen to Dean. So I consider this a break. There's probably heaps to write about Lisa but for the moment she comes across as a women who has it together. Together enough to let Dean go. I think there's love between them. Not a young, stars-in-their-eyes love, but a respect and understanding that's pretty remarkable considering the baggage Dean arrived with. More hearts for Lisa.
I love how they are handling Dean's story also. Some great moments with all the characters in this episode. Is it just me, or do the writers et al have a better grasp on Dean's character than Sam? Or do they intentionally keep Sam a little bit in the dark..? (Pun intended on the work "dark"). Just wondering...
Also... some snarky Dean. \o/ That line about thinking... my fav yet!
Ben has changed a lot yeah? Since "Kids are Alright? Where's that cocky, mini-Dean we had? I like that he has changed, because what he went through in that ep and what he's probably been through with Dean around would have changed him. I liked their scenes together, though I wouldn't have minded seeing a bit more "Dean as a positive dad role model" rather than than just grumpy Dean. But I get that that would have been there. Just off screen.
I like the Campbells. I love that we don't know what they are up to. Suitably creepy and mysterious. Can't wait to see what they are up to. (I'm thinking working for who ever set them free maybe?)
Loved the MOTW. Mostly because I spent the episode thinking "Oh, you've changed the rules on the monster again". Last week the Dijn could kill instantly (instead of slowly feeding) and now shape shifters can instantly transform. *sigh* And then they gave use a good reason for it! Yay! This also leaves the door open to future "softball team" shapeshifters.... GLEE.
Boys with a baby?!!... oh god! Kill me now. Far too cute for words. Love that it gave us some light hearted moments.
I love that this episode gave us a bit of everything. It might also be the first time that I couldn't actually watch the opener. A mother holding her child under a bed from a baddie? My living nightmare. Couldn't watch it. Had to distract myself for a minute there.
Loved that Show played with us (yet again!) making us think with the opening montage that maybe Sam could be a shapeshifter. Well, that crossed my mind. I like that they've thought through the MOTW, last week a Dijn (ideal "dream world") this week Shapeshifter - is everything (namely Sam) what it appears to be?? Clever.
Um... now Sam. Left Sam till last because.... oh Sam. I just...
Dear Sam,
I love you. I do. But what's going on in that head of yours hey? I like that you're strong and independent and have your own car. That you needed Dean on this hunt. But you haven't been suckered in again have you? Remember Ruby and how that turned out. You trust the Campbells and I'm not sure why. You lied to Dean and used the baby as bait. That's doesn't bode well Sam. Please don't be going through that cycle again. Dean will tell you something's wrong. You won't listen. There will be evil afoot and it will all end in tears (probably mine!). Also, telling them about Dean as a torturer... not good. Though I'm thinking they got you in a weak moment... so I will try to forgive you.
You did look damn hot though! Especially when there were two of you!
Love me.
PS: Can you please recommend your hair product to me. The bounce and shine is something I've been trying to achieve.
xx
This episode gave me hope for the future. It felt well rounded, well paced and its heart was there. And when an episode ends with Impala porn AND a rock song... who can complain. <33333333
Damn! Written more than I ever have. Sorry about that. Just couldn't help myself.

Date: 2010-10-02 12:19 pm (UTC)I love Lisa and that she's both passionate and pragmatic and that she defers to Dean on hunting things but doesn't take shit from him. I really liked her line to him about things not having to be all or nothing because thats what has torn him and Sam apart so many times. Smart women.
I love the little hints we are getting about Sam being aware that there's something wrong with him. My take on Sam is that having gone cold turkey for a year, one 'taste' of Dean and he just can't stop the need/want to have him back. Also I think maybe that links into whats wrong with Sam, and maybe somehow he knows he;s better with Dean there (they keep each other human).

Date: 2010-10-02 12:47 pm (UTC)Indeed it was. Kinda like old fashioned SPN wrapped in new fashioned SPN. :D (And Dean/Impala?? I totally want that Dean/Impala "erotically co-dependant" icon you mentioned *g*).
and that she defers to Dean on hunting things but doesn't take shit from him.
This! How right have they got her? *hats off* because that may well have been screwed up. Also, hats off to the actress because she has totally got what it is to be her...
one 'taste' of Dean and he just can't stop the need/want to have him back.
Yeah. I'm going this too. When he said last week that things were better with him around I totally believed it. Maybe Sam had forgotten what it was like to be with Dean. And I agree the whole "keeping each other human" very much comes into play... which makes me squeeeeeeeeee even more!
(and um.. *koff* taste of Dean? Pls don't be saying things like that... otherwise I will have to demand fic! *g*)

Date: 2010-10-02 01:00 pm (UTC)And Sam--giggled my head off at your letter to him. BTW, he drives a Charger, the IT American made muscle car of the last couple of years and holding--so appropriate for Sam.

Date: 2010-10-02 01:03 pm (UTC)And I love the direction they took it. I've been arguing all the time that they could make it work, afterall, how is going off to kill monsters any different from soldiers leaving their families to fight? Hmmmm?
Or Firefighters with their week off/week on schedules? People do it all the time.

Date: 2010-10-02 01:16 pm (UTC)Oh, interesting point. Except that monster might be after Dean and use Lisa and Ben to get to him. I'm not sure they'll go down this path. I hope not... but I suppose that's he's fear.
But I love that Lisa figured out a way that it could work. I'd love to think that it could. For both Dean and Lisa.
And there is a feeling that both Lisa and Ben may well be firing guns in the future... arghh...

Date: 2010-10-02 01:07 pm (UTC)Oh. Well, that might explain it. But they could have at least acknowledged that he died... :( Poor Mark. We didn't even get a chance to know you. But yes, good that we got some more insight into Christian. Still. Creepy people...
Oh it's a Charger is it?! Yay! I just love that it's black and a muscle car and... yep... an Impala in disguise. <33

Date: 2010-10-02 01:35 pm (UTC)I love Sam's car as well. Now if we could just get an idea of the music he listens to when driving, like we got so early in the Pilot with Dean. Bet it has an awesome, high-tech sound system.
Only the Alpha shifter could shift without shedding it's skin, probably what makes it the Alpha. Show made a point of showing us black granny's skin on the ground by the squad car.

Date: 2010-10-02 01:32 pm (UTC)And you know the Campbells are so disassociated from any kind of connection/empathy towards their characters for me that I did not even think about the whole lack of reaction re Mark's death. Now that you've brought it up I'm just gonna add it to the Dean's Wall of Weird Things Since He Found Out Sam's Back....and think suspicious thoughts along the lines of "Oh hai I see wat u did thar" tangent.
Your letter to Sam? ♥ ♥ ♥
I'm now gonna go look up pictures of Sam's car cos I'm thinking it won't be long - there's gonna be DodgeCharger!Porn any second now. You watch! LOL!
You need to post that - stat!

Date: 2010-10-03 02:55 am (UTC)Hee! Oh yes. I've heard so not so nice things said about Sam's car (I think my favourite has been "douchemobile"!), but I just love that it's so much like the Impala. Sam has been influenced by his choice...
there's gonna be DodgeCharger!Porn any second now.
Oh my lordy. They'll no doubt be a plethora of Impala porn vids out there. If some don't appear I think I might just have to do something... ;)

Date: 2010-10-02 01:32 pm (UTC)I agree with everything here, included your quibbles. There is some dissonance between what Sam (and Bobby) said last week about wanting Dean to have his chance and his insistence that Dean helps him this week.
As for Sam hiding something from Dean (hee, I love that the tears will be OURS) I'm not sure yet. Maybe one of the reasons Sam really insisted that Dean helped him was that he gets on an intellectual level that the Campbells are up to no good, but his general detachment (as per what he said himself over the phone 'I wonder about myself, too') isn't allowing him to see what exactly, or care enough. I'm probably reaching very far, but I like this fanwank.
Not cool laying into Dean for his experience in Hell, cousin Christian, I hope Dean stabs you in the neck soon. :D

Date: 2010-10-03 03:01 am (UTC)No no. I like that reasoning. I like that Sam is not only detached from stuff around him but with himself also. I'm thinking maybe even just being with Dean again will help him come to terms with the stuff he's dealing with.
Not cool laying into Dean for his experience in Hell, cousin Christian, I hope Dean stabs you in the neck soon.
I'm feeling some sort of showdown coming on... oooh, that moment totally got up my nose. I have to say though I think Dean handled himself very well.
I'm looking forward to reading your post about it all. :D

yay! I was a bit worried. In all honesty I think the fans "fixed" last weeks episode for me. I love how we can make right the things that don't seem to make any sense. But it was good to see it holding form this week.

Date: 2010-10-02 02:37 pm (UTC)In terms of Sam freaking out over the baby, let me offer up what happened here last night while watching episode. My husband and I were watching upstairs, door closed, maybe with the volume turned up a little loud. Kid after kid kept knocking, freaked out because "does that baby really have to be crying so loud?"
My youngest asked if it was a "weird, demented baby? You know, because it's on Supernatural?"
So I kind of buy Sam taking on Lucifer in Hell but freaked by a baby. YMMV... :)
I really want to know what's up with Sam and I'm choosing to have faith that they don't tease it out all season.
So, yep. Loved this one!

HA! Love this! Babies are scarier than the devil! :)
And how awesome is "if it was a "weird, demented baby? You know, because it's on Supernatural?"
They know the show well it would seem! :D
I really want to know what's up with Sam and I'm choosing to have faith that they don't tease it out all season.
Yep! I'm going to have faith too. I think they'll resolve it, say in the next 3 or 4 episodes. They don't usually drag these things on forever. Let's hope they don't this time. I want to know where my Sammy is!!!

Date: 2010-10-02 04:59 pm (UTC)Haha, I think Sam panicked because OMG BABY but it's also that Sam relies on Dean and misses him and he wants to reach out but he's screwed in the head. So, y'know, any excuse for why need MUST be there.
Lisa continues to be awesome, and I loved the Ben and Dean scenes here, and the Dean turning into John aspect and how that got addressed.
Yay, someone else who enjoys the creepy obnoxious Campbells! They're FUN. Although when Christian started ribbing Dean about being a torturer I went all OH YOU DID NOT JUST. *punches Christian* And I wanted Sam to punch Christian and Sam did intervene there and tell him to tone it down but he wasn't angry and I needed Sam to be angry, and he wasn't. So...Sam. Yes. It's sad.
I so appreciate we had a shapeshifter episode where Sam was imitated, it kind of helps solidify my theory that Sam is authentic Sam (ITA the show was toying with us a little, aaaah, you thought Sam was a shifter...no no, THIS is a shapeshifter, that's really Sam).
WORD on your letter to Sam.
I AM A HAPPY CAMPER, ASH!

Date: 2010-10-03 04:39 am (UTC)for me it speaks to how ruthless the Campbells are, what cold soldiers they are
Oh boy yeah! I went back over that scene to make sure I didn't miss anything and gramps does this little action with his hand to signify how it dies and that's it! I know we never got to know Mark, but I would have thought something might have been said or felt. Though it did show us how cold the Campbells are...*shiver*
and the Dean turning into John aspect and how that got addressed.
Oh yes. Wasn't that interesting?! Dean has always told himself he'd never be like John.. and here he was. I'm seeing Ben as Sam again also. Especially with Ben complaining about moving. And the sulking. But I love that we got to see even more of John's reasoning about why he brought the boys up the way he did.
Yay, someone else who enjoys the creepy obnoxious Campbells! They're FUN.
They are SO much fun! I do hope they stick around for a while. When Mark was knocked off my first through was one down, three to go.
it kind of helps solidify my theory that Sam is authentic Sam
Yes, yes. I'd loved to think that this was a deliberate ploy by show to say.. yep.. that's really Sam. Or is it a double blind? (actually, I don't think so. That was certainly more like Sam - though still lacking so of his Sammy qualities).
I AM A HAPPY CAMPER, ASH!
YAY!! I'm sensing a campsite full of happy people after this episode. \o/

Date: 2010-10-03 04:42 am (UTC)I think it will be very interesting to see how this plays out. I just love that we have this creepy mystery. My only real worry is how much Sam trusts them. There's just something wrong there.
and I don't know how to feel towards them.
Yeah. I think they are in there to unsettle us. We know something's wrong and yet here they are working with the Winchesters... I think we'll get some more insights pretty soon. Well, I hope so.

Date: 2010-10-03 08:51 am (UTC)ooh, maybe. In fact, I'd like that to be so. I'd have to look at the scene again to see what went on, but I thought they looked at Sam when he said that. I thought the indication was that Sam had said something because then didn't he try to settle it down. Of course, that doesn't mean he told them. I would LOVE that not to be the case. (Let's make it so!)
The only reason I can see for Sam spilling it is if he was in his current detached state and was, for some reason, talking to them about Dean. But yeah... he'd had no real reason to.
Thanks!

Date: 2010-10-03 02:19 am (UTC)Quite, as with the death of the other person in the last episode, who we don't even know who he was.
This reminds me of a long giggle-fest that Kripke and Edlund got into about all the dead people in SPN, and how they should do an episode some time of all the people whose cars were stolen, or of Dean and Sam arguing while doing clean-up at a crime scene, etc. In short, I don't think they take the issue very seriously.
I might be the only one, but I hope both boys get to keep their cars this season.
I actually thought that would be interesting, too.
I like that he has changed, because what he went through in that ep and what he's probably been through with Dean around would have changed him.
An interesting point, yes. My feeling is that the Ben Dean originally met was quite a poseur. But once he encountered a very real and threatening experience, a less put-on personality revealed itself.

Date: 2010-10-03 08:56 am (UTC)Yes. But I got the feeling that these people should mean something to each other. I figure if the show is going to continue with its family theme (which it seems to be), some feeling about one of the member dying would be important. Or maybe it is significant that it's not..
My feeling is that the Ben Dean originally met was quite a poseur.
I often wonder if they even knew that they'd be using Lisa and Ben again in the future. I suspect not. (though I'd love that they had planned that all along). I probably would liked to have seen a little bit of the "old" Ben, but I'm thinking they are trying to compare him a little bit to a young Sam. I thought so more in that episode. Especially with the complaining about moving etc.

Yes, the whole YED sequence in 6.01 definitely emphasized that, though that's a nice catch about the moving issue. I wonder if Sam was originally eager to learn about guns or not.

Date: 2010-10-04 12:04 am (UTC)You know, I bet he was. I mean, they would have been around and what kid wouldn't be curious. Only instead of "no don't touch that" coming from John, ... it would have been "here, let me show you how to use that".
Don't know if you've read
