. (spoilers for promo now in comments)
First up: the way I "react" to an episode, in terms of my reaction posts, rely purely on how I felt coming off it. (*g* sounds like some sort of drug. Go figure.). I go with the gut. Was I bored? Did it make me frustrated? Make me want to cry or hit something or jump for joy? What was my immediate reaction and feeling afterwards.
I came off that episode with a buzz that I haven't felt in a while and I'm thinking (hoping *g*) it's not just due to the glass of wine I was enjoying while I was watching it. :)
So... let me count the numerous ways in which I loved this episode...
I have to start with a couple of big ones...
1. Dean: "As of yesterday I wanted to kill him in his sleep. I thought he was a monster".
BINGO!. This. The very fact that Show has hit on the VERY THING that has been Sam's story arc since the very BEGINNING has made me just... guh. It's always been about Sam's "weirdness", his "otherness".. his potential to be a monster. When Sam was in the panic room at the end of S4 his nightmare was Dean calling him a monster. And then to hear Dean actually say it in the phone message is the very thing that tipped him over the each to go after Lilth. My god.. even back to Nightmare when Sam says "aren't you worried? (about my "powers") - Sam has always feared being some sort of monster.
AND NOW HE IS!! And I am mean REALLY. Not the "monster" he became in S4. That was still Sam. Sam who thought he was doing the right thing. This is monster!Sam (shut up.. I don't mean his size)... only, it's not that Sam actually IS a monster- it's that there's a monster BEING Sam.
Now...that shouldn't please me at all but here's the thing... (and the thing that probably takes me out on a limb and I could be totally wrong of course but), for me, this episode confirmed that Sam is a "new" type of monster. One we haven't seen before. A monster who knows exactly how to play Sam. To BE him. That whole idea excites me because this is EVERYTHING Sam has feared. It somehow makes it part of Sam's story. This "thing" has tapped into Sam's psyche. It's everything Sam appears to be on the outside only the INSIDE is missing completely. So we are seeing a stripped down Sam (quite literally in one ep *g*) and by showing us what's missing we are seeing EVERYTHING THAT MAKES SAM SAM...(i kinda love that...).
Also...I'm thinking it's even MORE than just Sam without a soul. I mean, it could well be. But the fact that it was said that he was "NOT HUMAN" makes me think we are dealing with a new monster.
Ok. It could be that Sam's "not human" because he doesn't have a soul. I can buy that. And I imagine that that is probably the way it will go. In fact.. even the notion that a human without a soul is a "monster" is interesting to me. The SPN universe has always been about the "otherness" of monsters... remember Dean's line at the end of Blood Lust? About hating them..? It's all there. :D
But I will say outright that I did not believe ONE WORD that came out of Sam's mouth in that episode. Not even at the end. This episode was about the truth ... and "Sam" did nothing but lie. The whole time. (LOVED Jared here... he is OWNING this "other" Sam. I am not an Evil!Sam fan at all, but if we were to ever to really see evil!Sam, it's now. Jared has his wish. He's often said he's wanted to play evil!Sam. We have him now.)
Damn.. that's a long first point. But yeah... "MONSTER" = HUGE SPN MOMENT!! \o/
2. Dean. *bows down* I love this Dean. This is a Dean who has SEEN IT ALL. The most telling thing about this episode was that Dean DEALT! I have to say that I did not like the idea that people killed themselves on hearing the truth. (there's probably some major meta here about suicide, but I can't won't go there just at the moment...), but the fact that Dean HANDLED THE TRUTH (hee! title..) is testament to his HERONESS. But it's more than that. It's showed that Dean is totally aware of the truths he buries... but they aren't truths that are going to make him pull the trigger. He DEALT with the truths Lisa told (because he knew them already) and he DEALT with the truths that not!Sam spouted - he dealt by SEEING THROUGH them. Go Dean!
I have to say half way through the ep I was worried that Dean really did believe the crap that not!Sam was spouting. I wanted to slap him. So when he FINALLY saw not!Sam for the monster is was I have to say I cheered.
Did I cheer because he was beating up on his brother? No way. It kills me when they beat each other up, but, to me, he wasn't beating up his brother. He was beating up the "thing" that was pretending to be his brother. And something that was mocking Sam by pretending to be him totally deserved that beating. (of course, if it turns out that that really is Sam then.... um... no.... he still deserved that kick in the arse....and this from a Sam!gal /o\ ETA: I have an explanation for why I think this in the comments below..)
Also... this is the "grown up" Dean that I've been wanting to see. Ok.. I like fullofmanpain!Dean... but he's done that already, so to see him take on the pain and OWN it just... *guh* CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!!! \o/
3. The Mystery. The very fact that I am on the edge of my seat wanting to know what the FUCK has happened to Sam means I am engaged and therefore invested and interested and makes me write all this stuff. I am DYING to know what has happened to Sam. The limp!Sam fan in me likes to think he is being held captive somewhere waiting for his Knight in Shining Armour to rescue him (hell maybe? inside his own meatsuit? a place where his memories are being used to "feed" this new monster?) or is it him without a soul and his soul needs to be retrieved now (why am I feeling the latter is less exciting??). I suspect the latter here, because of all the hints we've had about how valuable a soul is. Makes sense. Either way... we'll get Sam back soon and there will BE HUGS AND MANLY TEARS OF PAIN AND REUNION!!! \o/
The other great stuff... (I'll be shorter now..)
4. BOBBY!! SQUEEEEEEEE. And you know what I loved?!! That we TOTALLY knew what Bobby was going through because of that wonderful Bobby episode. Hitting the books... hee!! Oh Bobby... At last they have given you so truly HILARIOUS lines.
5. Drinking! After my recent drinking meta I was drawn into Dean's lonely drinking (way to handle those truths Dean..) and Cas's very interesting moment of topping up Dean's glass. Wow.. that was scary to me.
6. Cas. He's an enigma. As an angel should be. I'm loving that about Cas at the moment. They are setting up a new mystery with him. Dean reaching out to him for help and being shunned. Reminds of the Cas we had when he was with Uriel. Yeah.. it'll be interesting to see what they do with him now...
7. Lisa. Fan's are going to be hard on her I think. Not me. Someone pushes my kid? Yep. I'd by saying good-bye too. Here's the thing though. Lisa has seen Dean in grief. She's heard about the stuff out there - even seen some of it, but she's never seen Dean truly violent (I believe). Possibly never seen Dean in full on "hunter" mode. So, sure, she accepted him into her family as a broken man.... but not a violent one. I'm still on Lisa's side. <33
8. Show acting like fangirls. Hee! I loved that Show was second guessing what was wrong with Sam the same way we have been for the last 6 weeks. Lucifer? Damaged? Doppelganger?? Oh Show. I heart that you read us so well... (and *kicks* you at the same time for knowing us all too well!).
9. Colours!! I won't even attempt to talk about the colour stuff in this episode. I am sure
zimshan will go to town. I will say that I love how I NOTICE all that stuff since her awesome colour metas. When the boys went into Veritas's (sp?) den the colours where wild. So many scenes that were painted one colour...
10. Bromance. Oh yes indeedy doody. It was in there tonight! Acknowledgment of their undying love for each other (and yes, I take my wincest glasses off when viewing the show... mostly...), their "unhealthy" bond.... *dances*.... Even though the boys aren't really together the pain that Dean feels through the separation was enough for me to be satisfied that the brotherhood is still there. I don't believe FOR A MINUTE that Dean wanted to kill Sam... just the monster that was pretending to be Sam.
11. GORE! My god... oh Show..<333
I have one more thing I LOVED to PIECES but first..
The MOTW...hmmm... not sure about that yet. We needed truths so this was a convenient monster of the week. I couldn't see past that really. I have to say I was too busy with everything else to really ponder that aspect of the show. I'll wait to read what you all have to say about that one.. :)
Also... when the people at the beginning were telling truths they didn't acknowledge (as in "why did I say that?"like people did later on)..that bugged me for some reason.
And now. This. This amazing call back to Dean "shutting down" with grief when John died and Dean's line "He's trying to be like me"... GOD DAMN!!! This was exactly what I was thinking when this shot came up (and worked perfectly for why Dean initially believed not!Sam.)
Lacking empathy, cold (not)Sam...

Reminded me of....unsympathetic, "cold" Dean...

Squeeeeeee!!! How awesome is that??!!
Ok. There's SOmuch more... but I have already written a novel so I will leave it there.
I will say...I see hope here. Show has a PLAN and I LOVE that. Would I rather see the boys working happily together? Shit yeah. Am I happy that they are giving me more than that? Yeah... I am now. Of course, that still hinges on finding Sam SOON. And what exactly is going on with him.
I did not watch the promo for next week. Even though I was desperate to. But I want Sam back NOW!! No doubt about it... but I am enjoying the ride and the exploration of Sam's character. Especially as Sam isn't even there. Sam will have a shit load of healing to do after this and ..um... yeah...that should be interesting to see.
<33

Date: 2010-10-31 02:57 am (UTC)Show is soooo intense and full on at the moment. I have NO idea why I'm enjoying that as much as I am because it often kills me when it's like this....but I love so much that Sam is not responsible for what's happening to his "body" that it gives me hope we'll be seeing the real Sam again VERY soon.

Date: 2010-10-31 07:40 am (UTC)Sam (and by extension, Jared) scared the sh*t out of me in that scene. I have never felt so uncomfortable and creeped out by anyone or anything on SPN before, or any other show for that matter. Sent shivers up my spine. Anyone who says Jared can't act really needs to watch this episode. He's knocking it outta the ball-park this season.

Date: 2010-10-31 09:37 am (UTC)Jared is OWNING it this season. So scary and creepy. And hey. The show is called Supernatural. It should be scary and creepy..

Date: 2010-11-02 02:11 pm (UTC)Their driven attitudes are very similiar, except Dean was acting out of repression and grief while Sam is acting on I suppose bare instinct and the need to get the job done for the sake of- well getting it done. Sam is so very chilling and heck yeah Jared is hitting this out of the ballpark!

Date: 2010-10-30 04:21 pm (UTC)Also interesting that the lack of a soul is apparently what made Sam able to lie under the compulsion.

Date: 2010-10-31 03:04 am (UTC)Oh, I'm sorry to hear that honey. I'm still trying to understand why I am so buzzed by this season. I think because if Sam had come back suffering PTSD we would be going through what we have already been through with Dean. This is something very different for SPN and that excited me and opens up some interesting possibilities. I hate the boys fighting, but I don't see this as the boys fighting. Rather Dean fighting a Monster. Which begs the question...where is Sam?
Also interesting that the lack of a soul is apparently what made Sam able to lie under the compulsion.
Yeah. I LOVED that we could see this Sam!thing struggle initially with not be able to lie (there was this tiny "squeak" as though there was an inner struggle) and then it was able to lie. He did it at the end also. So maybe lack of soul means being able to lie. Or it's a monster who is able to lie under compulsion. Either way I love the way Jared played that.
Awesome.

Date: 2010-10-30 04:31 pm (UTC)that Sam is a "new" type of monster.
I think I'm maybe expanding on your insight to say that perhaps this is how a new alpha is born?
The shapeshifters were reproducing, the vampires were recruiting--all the Alphas seem to want more monsters, and heaven and hell are too busy with their internal pissing contests to give a crap that the monsters are running the show on planet earth.
So wht if there is something out there that wants to make Sam into a new Alpha?
Hee hee An EmoAlpha. A HoodieAlpha. A MoreHairThanNecessaryAlpha.
I feel a poll coming on.

Date: 2010-10-30 10:34 pm (UTC)Yeah... might have been a bit harsh there. But I suppose my feeling is, is if this really IS Sam then holy crap he he's not a nice person. I am completely invested in Sam story and during all of S4 I was TOTALLY with why Sam was doing what he was doing. But this. This is not a Sam that I can feel any sympathy for. There's no indication (for me) that Sam wants to be understood or helped or that there is anything redeemable there.
That is why I totally believe it's not Sam. I would be extremely distressed if this is some post hell "damaged" Sam.
So yeah... as much as I hate saying it if Sam deliberately:
- Left his brother for 1 year and not told him he was back..
- used him as bait for (basically) all of the hunts so far this season
- was instrumental (though inadvertently) in driving Lisa away
- has caused Dean the pain he is now going through
then yeah. He needs his but kicked.
Though I would really love to hear the other side of this argument. As I said, I would never have thought I could say such a thing about Sam. So if there's some reason why he needs to be understood in this form I would really love to hear it. (though you may have said some stuff on your journal... I haven't checked it out yet).

Yeah. I couldn't wait any longer. It came just at the right time. I thought for a moment they weren't going to go as far as they did. I thought it had ended twice before the real ending, so as much as I hate it when they beat on each other I was pleased it went a step further to some sort of resolution.
I am SO tempted to watch the promo, but have resisted for fear of it giving me wrong "ideas" about what to expect for next week. But I am very excited... (which means... *ack* I might be disappointed. Hee! I shall wait and see..)
And I'm glad you like my babble. I've really enjoyed writing down my thinky thoughts. This season has certainly provided a lot of fodder for it... :D)

Date: 2010-10-31 04:05 am (UTC)I haven't seen the promo for next week. I'm trying to wait because I don't want to be clouded in my thoughts about this week.
I guess my only concern would be how easily Sam has been made into a villain again.
It's so weird. This would normally freak me out because I hate that Sam is the villian. But. I see Sam as a victim. I don't know where he is but as this is clearly not Sam he can't be blamed for anything this thing has done.
Unless of course he's made some sort of deal which has allowed this to happen, but even then there would be a damn good reason why Sam would do that.
I think this Sam is absolutely fascinating - considering they way they are playing with all the things we know to be true about Sam.
Can't wait to see what Jared does when Sammy really returns. (And yes... if they don't give real Sam a decent amount of story line after that, I will be seriously disappointed. But so far... I'm seeing potential for some meaty, juicy Sam story in the future...*G* )

Date: 2010-10-31 09:58 am (UTC)I thought I was the only one who thought that Sam was lying there, not completely, because he has expressed the feeling other times about the wrongness he feels in himself, but he was lying about needing help because that was a way maybe not Sam remembers that always goes through to Dean. And it did, Dean put the knife down.
I could not cheer on the beating, but then I never do when something like that happens becasue it hurts me. But what I saw Dean expressing his frustration but most of all neutralizing what he perceives as a big threat at the moment. Putting the knife down was so deliberate! Also, Dean is def. not a saint and acting out of anger and frustration is what makes him interesting to me.
I`m with you on Lisa. Completely. But I`m still holding some kind of hope that she and Dean can negotiate something.
Also I liked the MoTW because it gave me meta thoughts about what is objective and subjective truth, how we perceive it and how powerful it can be when we believe in it completely.
Very good episode that felt like a cliffhanger. *whimpers*

Date: 2010-10-31 10:17 am (UTC)but he was lying about needing help because that was a way maybe not Sam remembers that always goes through to Dean.
Yes. See, that's why I see this as being so clever. This soulless "thing" that is Sam knows how to get through to Dean. What hurts him. It's killed to see notSam turn on the puppy eyes. But it was not quite. Love the way Jared played that.
I've wondered if people have actually thought that that really was Sam calling for help? That might be why there's character bashing (of both boys). (?) I never saw that so when Dean finally twigged I was relieved. It's heart breaking... but I'd rather that than Dean continue to be duped by notSam.
But I`m still holding some kind of hope that she and Dean can negotiate something.
I would LOVE them to resolve this somehow. In my imagination I have Sam being returned and Dean explaining to Lisa the whole set up. Ok, Lisa will still be wary, but maybe she'll be able to forgive him. Dean felt a sense of worth and happiness with Lisa and Ben, it would such a shame for that to be all lost now. (whaaaa I'm breaking my own heart here..)
Also I liked the MoTW because it gave me meta thoughts about what is objective and subjective truth, how we perceive it and how powerful it can be when we believe in it completely.
Yeah. I felt like there was some really wonderful opportunities to meta about the MoTW. But my brain is still trying to get around the whole Sam thing.
And now that I have been (accidently) spoiled for the promo I can go back and read below your space. :)

Date: 2010-11-01 12:35 am (UTC)I really didn't think that show would ever go there, let them grow and let their relationship change...
I'm still on Lisa's side.
Me too. She did what she had to do. But I don't actually think that what she said was any different to what she would have said if Dean hadn't been under a spell. Because she always tells it how it is to Dean, she's done it before, and she's done it today. She clearly loves him, but that doesn't mean she'll take any bullsh*t of him. Love that woman.

Interesting times ahead i think.....:)

Date: 2010-11-01 08:10 am (UTC)For one thing, I'm hoping Sam doesn't get his soul back until the end of the season (evil I know) but I'm hoping we get more of this angst and drama between the boys and then have the last two episode or three be about getting Sam's soul back and then season 7 can be about the boys being truly back together \o/.
If the writers are smart they would totally do that. I mean look how riled up we are now about the boys, keep us having heart attacks for the rest of the season, then give us our boys back in the new one ;)
Great review! A lot I agree with, some I saw a bit differently than you did. I want to watch the episode again, and then write my review. Unlike you I do a lot of ranting ;) So, stay tuned!

Date: 2010-11-01 09:42 am (UTC)It's interesting to me that when I posted this I had not seen the preview. If I had I think it may have been a bit different. I've been holding on to one idea and that changed things for me. (talk about ranting I am working on a meta type post about it now /o\).
Hmmmmmm...the thought of Sam remaining soulless scares me some ~ though very interesting if they have to hunt together and maybe dean has to "retrain" Sam to be compassionate again...and that's how he gets his soul back (wow, I go off on tangents sometimes....*g*). Actually I like that idea more than sam's soul being in hell...
I have lots of thinky thoughts now that I have seen that preview.
Thanks for stopping by. Always great to share thoughts . :)

Date: 2010-11-02 02:51 pm (UTC)Also, yeah, Sam now IS the monster he always feared he'd become. Monster might be a strongish word- but "Freak" comes close. He just ain't right. And after so many years of trying desperately to be "normal" he's the exact opposite of anything close to normal. *Hugs Wee!Hopeful!Sam... Heck, HUGS all incarnations of Sam including this latest one*
And Dean's drinking- Yeah, it's his crutch big time. Even when things were "good" with Lisa he was always showing drinking too much. And Cas pouring for him... Yeah, there probably is something to that. When he first went for the bottle, I thought Cas was going to take a swig himself. Interesting that drinking became one of Cas's vises as his mojo left him- and he mainly had Dean to follow for how to act as a human... hmmm...
Overall, I saw it as a gesture of friendship and acceptance. This is Dean, he drinks when he's stressing. Cas knows this. He can't help Dean with his emotional issues or his brother issues... but he can pour him one more for the road... AWWWW.

Date: 2010-11-02 10:45 pm (UTC)It was weird coming off of that episode and having this notion about Sam turning into the very monster he feared he would become. I felt (and still would like the think this is true - though I'm now doubtful) that there was something Other than Sam driving him. So, it isn't necessarily that Sam IS a monster, it that's Sam has been (maybe) taken over by something that is turning him into one. I thought it might have been related to the Alpha monsters he's been searching for. I suppose we'll have to wait and see. Arghhh... I hate waiting.
I like the idea that Cas poured a drink out of friendship. Dean could certainly use a friend right now. I kinda liked that Cas what Dean needed and supplied it for him. Maybe he needs to see that Dean needs some real help as well. Maybe that will develop as the season progresses.
I truly want to see some hope ahead for our men. They've been through so much already.
Thanks for dropping in. And for the friend. :D
