And reading through the vidding chat comments, I think I might be the only person who had their hit count go down when joining the SPN fandom *hides*

And it just proves your point about content over quality because the videos weren't masterpieces by any means, but they garnered more views due to the larger audience of the show. Or maybe it was because the vids were shameless I'M SO SEXY montages. Ok, ok, there was also crack, but we all know crack and porn are the lowest common denominators ;)

Only other big fandoms I can think of are X-files and BTvS (not that I know much of previous SPN fandoms. Didn't even know fandom was such a think before discovering SPN and LJ).

It wasn't that big of a fandom, but it was a more largely watched show. People tend to forget SPN only gets maybe a quarter of the viewership (on a good day) of your average major network show.

I'm living proof that content matters much more than the technical aspect (I'm the one who instigated Ash to make that discussion). But I can't stop myself cause it's the type I do is like a drug to me. They just have absolutely to audience to speak of. :)

And if crack and porn are the lowest common denominators where does parody and satire stand?

Sorry for the delayed response. While it's true that parody and satire are the more sophisticated cousins of crack, it doesn't have quite the same broad-based appeal since those genres require knowledge of the source material (for parody) or topical issue (for satire) in order for the humor to be understood. So not only does the viewer need to be familiar with the show footage you are using, they also need to be familiar with the second source you are parodying/satirizing.

Take for example my cracky Simpsons icon. Someone who has never seen the show could still look at it and go LOL, UNICORNS BARFING RAINBOWS. Whereas your Simpsons icon requires knowledge of both Homer's catchphrase and Japanese in order for the humor to translate. It's not your fault your wit is simply more sophisticated, and hence, slightly more esoteric ;)

I love it when someone actually "gets the joke about my icon"! I don't expect a lot of people to get but it's nice when it happens.

Guess I should be that way about my opening mashups too. I shouldn't expect people to feel the same way about them as I do but appreciate when someone does.

Sort of like the two Ashes to Ashes mashups I did. Both of them require knowledge of both shows. In the Good Guys Jack is stuck in Property crimes with Dan and wants to escape while in the Fringe one Olivia is trapped in another dimension and is trying to figure a way home. BOth of them "require" knowing both shows.

WOW! That's like a double whammy, isn't it...

I'm disappointed to need to drop out of the festivids. Would have been great fun. Though, if I find I get this vid done quicker than I think I might have some extra time and pull something together anyway.

I haven't watched it yet. I think I'm too scared too. :)

Bummer about festivids. I'm still hopeful I can pull off a gift vid. I have managed to finally rip the source material and I have a song idea, so it may happen.

Yeah, it's a real bummer. And in reality I should just put this vid I'm making on hold at the moment and do my festivid. But I can't. My mind is totally focused on this vid and I can't let it go. I would only be rushing the festivid in order to get back to it.

So yeah. I was beginning to feel stressed about not being able to make the festivid. If I find I can make this other vid sooner, I will definitely make a gift vid. I would really like to make it for the person I had because I got excited about the ideas. :)

Well, things you do for fun should be, you know - fun. If it's starting to stress you out it ain't fun anymore, is it? So sit back, figure out your epic vid (looking forward to that!) and enjoy the festivids when they come out.

That's why I usually don't sign up for things like that. I can't stay focused on some things cause a bright shiny object (a new idea for a vid) will pop into my head.

And my probably most insane, crazy-teechnical vid will be up in a day or so. I'm not sure if there is even a fandom for this thing but it was a joy to create...

Ooooh hey! Guess what?! My Show did a Mash-up opening last night!! Yep - totally thought of you. I won't go into details here (spoiler aware) but I squealed and thought Show has been watching fanvids. I mean, they've done it before but this seemed stuff a fan vid would be made of.

I'll check out your vid as soon as I can. :) Not sure if you've been back to the discussion but there's some interesting stuff at the bottom about the definition of "fandom".

And re your question above - I think satire is possibly harder to access (and in "get") then pure crack. Crack, is usually pretty silly and very "obvious" whereas satire and parody require (I think) a deeper understanding of the source.

This is funny. I was watching the Supernatural/X-Files thing when your email came in. I love things like that...

And the satire thing came to me a day or two ago. I could use content people are familiar with but in the satirical context some people might not enjoy it. It's not attempting to invoke an emotional response. It's attempt to make you see things in an new, and possibly weird, way. And lots of people watching vids just don't want that from their viewing.

And I'm satisfied with living in the "State of obscurity". It's comfortable here... and the taxes are low... and the politicians are, well - non-existent!
