I hated that beyond words.

I am literally sobbing as I type because this actually feels like the end.

What happened to my beautiful, bromancy, interesting, scary, intriguing show? My show that had "something up its sleeve", my show that only ever had brothers at odds with each other FOR A REAL REASON! My show that had brothers who loved each other. My show that knew it's history. My show that WAS NEVER a soap opera. My show.... *sobs*

My heart is breaking so much and it fucking hurts.

I trust that I missed something. To be honest I don't even have the energy to rant. I am so disappointed and hurt. The season cliffhanger is Amelia walking back into Sam's life... just. No words.

I have never witnessed so much distrust, disloyalty, dis-LOVE between the brothers....EVER. Even when they were fighting at the end of S4 there was at least passion. This was just...nothing. All those things without any reason. They were hardly even on the screen together. I think I even detected real hate between them. And if that's supposed to make me tune in to see how they resolve it?...well...yeah. Not so much.

The show has changed. I suppose it had to. So many of you already saw it. I glimpsed it and clawed myself back. But this is what the show has become and that saddens me so, so much.

I know I shouldn't post. I know you want positive stuff. But in one episode it cemented everything I feared this season would turn into. A boring soap opera.

(I will say that it was beautifully filmed. And if it was a soap opera then I am sure it was beautifully written).

I, at least, didn't see dislike. I saw some really dangerous jealousy in the way they each tried to use the other's relationship against him. ::nods:: I think they are both jealous and hurt and lashing out, but I also saw support. Dean accepting that Sam had Benny tracked and the possibility that Sam was right about Benny. Sam may not have reacted to Martin knocking Dean out (I see that as simple Winchester - let's face it physical blows int their world are seen as valid forms of communication) but when Martin verbally criticized him, Sam nearly came unglued. I think there's a lot of pain, jealousy and anger and it's coming out mush less volatility than we've seen before becasue both of them have come through so much. I see their relationship as almost a long term marriage, The love and passion are banked, but even deeper, and in some ways they are even more vulnerable to what they perceive as betrayal becasue of the length of their relationship.

I do agree this was a pretty bland episode over all. I read somewhere that ep. 10 was supposed to be the mid-season but becasue of network delays this was what we ended up with whcih would explain a lot.

Yeah. I think the episode is largely about honest efforts to compromise breaking down. Sam and Dean both start the episode willing to understand each other's point of view. There's also that sense of distrust, but it doesn't start out as the dominant emotion. Martin acts as a destabilising force, because he forces both Sam and Dean's hands - he doesn't comprehend moral grey areas or compromise. It's interesting that he references John (and even tries to borrow John's parental authority), because I would say that John often served the same purpose; his certainties and his demands would destabilise Sam and Dean's carefully negotiated partnership.

Benny tries to negotiate with Martin too, but can't. Don offers Sam a compromise, but Sam prefers the certainty of flight. Everybody's trying, but right now it isn't working. I don't doubt that Sam and Dean love each other - I mean, set against Sam's anger at Martin's criticism is Dean's constant insistence that Sam is really, really good at his job - but at the moment they're failing to connect.

I just heard that myself. It does change things a bit. I mean - mid-season finales are supposed to have drama, serious consequences and a big hook to get people watching next year. If that hook is that Dean's retaliatory move against Sam for putting Benny in danger is an uncomfortable ploy involving Amelia, and now Sam won't have a civil conversation with him, that leaves them both looking petty and foolish. The 'big question' is whether they can both get over themselves enough to have an adult conversation - something they've done many times before, and which we should be able to answer with a confident YES.

If this is just a minor spat at the end of a random MOTW episode, well that's a different matter. They have those all the time, as people do. It will almost certainly get sorted out in the next episode - effectively 'next week' - and it's not really anything to get excited about. I still don't think the episode is great, but it's only bad if it's asked to do the job of a finale.

Mind you, it is the finale we have, and I think there's good reason to be annoyed by the note we've been left on. Maybe annoyed with the network instead of with the writers, though. :)
