Pick a clip (or a section/scene) from any fanvid I've made and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when made that section, why I selected those clips, how I did certain effects, why I chose those effects, how I interpreted the lyric, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the vid, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

yes I have plagiarised it from the fic commentary meme...

I'm a sucker for vid talk so.... here's a link to my vids.

OK...it was hard to pick because I love so many of them. "Walking on Sunshine" (which I showed to one of my grade 12 students and she immediately texted her friends about it). And the section is the part where they are fixing each other's hair or eyelashes, you know that personal space ignoring thing that family does all the time, but others usually don't.

Hi there. Yay for showing your year 12 students. There are times when I wish I could show my students my vids... but not only are they in primary school (so probably not so appropriate), but I think it's better if I keep my on line identity a secret. ;)

Ok so. I love those moments when the boys are getting into each others personal space. In this vid I was particularly interested in trying to match moments when they mirror each other. I knew I wanted to use that clip of Jensen fixing Jared's hair ('cause I love it!!) and as I was thinking about it I remembered there was a similar shot of Jensen removing an eyelash from Jared. Bingo. I get all excited when those things come to me. :)

I decided to split the eyelash clip and sandwich the hair clip between the split. I just liked the way their movements are mirrored. And I adore Jensen's seriousness when Jared comes away with the eyelash *adores* And it seemed to work as a way of finishing of that little section.

And then of course that little section fits into the overall theme of the following clips of them touching each other...

Thanks for the suggestion. I could natter about vid stuff for ages. :)

Ok then . . . From "Forever":

Roundabout 2 minutes in, THE scene from Flesh Blood, with the brotherly gropping blended in.

Hi. Wow - you're really taken me back with this vid. Thanks. I hadn't watched it for ages. It's really weird watching now knowing everything that has transpired for them since then. I remember when I made this thinking that there was no way Dean was going to hell. When he uttered those words "I don't want to go to hell", I really thought he would be saved some how...

Anyway. I do remember making this section from the vid and I remember having discussions with my beta about it, because I don't think I was quite able to achieve a clear interpretation with it. And looking back on it I"m pretty sure I haven't...

The lyric is "The way you taught me to look past everything I had ever learned". My interpretation was that Dean's learned to look out for Sam, to be there for him, to care for him when he was hurt (and I thought the clip of him comforting him during his vision would symbolise that) but by making the deal he has had to look past that and do something that he knows will hurt Sam. So in fact go against everything he has learned.

I think I was thinking that Sam is the reason he's had to go against the very thing that has been ingrained into him since Sam was born and even though Sam hasn't exactly "taught" him this, it's something that Sam has made him do because he died.

Wow - complicated and I can see now that that probably doesn't come across at all. :/ Actually my brain often goes into complex and unclear interpretations .. it's why [livejournal.com profile] _sharvie_ is such a gem. She's not afraid to say.."What??" when I come up with these..

I'd be curious to know what came across for you in that bit... don't feel obliged to answer that of course. *g*

Thanks so much for picking out this bit. It's really made me think. :)

Sorry for the late reply . . . *hides*

It's one of my favorites, a great interpretation of a song I love, and I'm one of those weird fans who actually like S3, sooo . . . *gg*

Well, I interpreted it slightly different, but not much. I took it as Sam making him get over, uh, protecting Sam being his first priority, over thinking that it's more important than everything, more important than his own life (which he "learned" from John). And making him realise that he deserved being saved, too, partly by showing him that Sam would go just as far to protect him as Dean did for Sam, that he loves him as much.
Making sense? *lol*

Heya!

Thanks so much for letting me know this - I love hearing about other peoples interpretations of my vids. And I love the way you saw this... And yes, this makes a lot of sense. (hee! More than mine ;) )

Thanks again more allowing me to look at this vid again. :)

Hiya:
I'm back to enable more vid talk. I just watched Hurt (not the way it was ment to because I'm on a computer with no sound) and Holy Mother of God, the Supernatural powers that be really stick it to Dean don't they? Perhaps because the actor does the wounded and tormented soul so much better. All the soap opera experience probably was pretty helpful in developing the ability to emote on camera.

Anyway, I wanted to ask you to talk about the scene at the end, when Dean was watching over Sam after he was knifed.

Oh yay! More chat... *rubs hands gleefully*

When I decided to make this vid I was in too minds how to end it. One was Dean re-thinking his decision to make the deal for Sam, the other was taking Dean right back to his childhood and some how showing different decisions he might have made to avoid the future he and Sam have. I decided that option 2 would be too hard to show, so I went for the deal option. I worried about it a bit because I wasn't sure what people would think about having Dean ponder that. But I went with it because I'm sure both Dean and Sam must think about how pivotal that moment was in the lives.

So. I had to build up the scene to get to the moment when he is watching over Sam. I wanted to show the audience what Dean was thinking about so I chose the visuals of Sam's death and Dean deal. I knew I wanted to show the shot of the road at "million miles away" as I thought it was a nice visual match with that lyric. I actually played with these clips for ages trying to get them to fit together. Initially I had some of the clips running backwards - to show a reversal of time, but I thought it looked a bit corny so changed it. I ended up only using the one of the car's headlights. But mainly because I thought it looked better than it moving the opposite way. I also had a shot of Dean sitting down instead of him rising (when he yells "what am I supposed to do"). I kept it like that until the last moment and decided to put in the shot of Dean thinking instead. I was happy I did that because I think it cements the idea that Dean is actually pondering what to do.. do I make a deal, or not...

The way the scene of Dean looking over dead Sam is shot has some wonderful clips for vidders. That lovely pan over Sam's body to Dean is just fabulous. So I had to use it. I also had to use Dean's final tear drop at the end. I placed that clip before some of the others and worked my way to it, as it were, experimenting with various clips until it looked and felt right. So most of that scene is a variety of shots to show Dean contemplating the deal.

Lots of cross dissolves in there.

I never wanted to show Dean actually deciding whether to make the deal or not. I just wanted to make the suggestion that after all he and Sam have been through it's something he might actually think about. Though I confess a little to thinking that with that tear drop Dean decided to let Sam die in peace .... but that's open to interpretation. :)

I hope that makes some sense. Most of the time it's like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. You have all these wonderful pieces that you've got to make fit somehow. :)

Thanks for allowing me to have some more natter time.
:D

Thanks. That was very interesting. I don't know how to vid, just to make art, so it is facinating to see what goes into the creative process.

Hey, I would love to know about the scene 0:59 - 1:07 from the vid 'hurt'. What made you choose it and what ever else you want to say about it.

Heya hun! Thanks for asking...

So it's the bit "What have I become, my sweetest friend?" ...

I remember wanting to show Dean reflecting on how he sees and treats Sam since his experience in hell. I just loved that lyric because I felt it made him seem aware that he had somehow changed. Hitting Sam and loosing his temper instead of comforting Sam and trying to maybe talk to him.

I started that whole segment with the clip of the eye because the eye became a motif throughout the vid - a link to his time in hell. I then just wanted to show Dean loosing it with Sam and then later regretting it. "Sweetest friend" is such a lovely way to describe Sam I think. He is "sweet", even underneath his betrayal of Dean and he is certainly a friend...

The way Dean rejected Sam during Season 4 is a major reason, I think, why Sam ended up turning to Ruby instead of him. And him hitting Sam here is the beginning of his turning away. I wanted to show Dean reflecting on that.

I hope that's clear ... if not let me know hun. Thanks so much for asking. :D

*hugs*

Thanks, you made it very clear. I had the feeling before that I was missing something about that scene, well, now I don't anymore.
I find it fascinating how you put so much thought into your vids. I can relate to beeing so thorough and exact, I'm that way with things that are important to me.
*hugs back*
