What the heck....
Nov. 14th, 2009 08:28 amPick a clip (or a section/scene) from any fanvid I've made and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when made that section, why I selected those clips, how I did certain effects, why I chose those effects, how I interpreted the lyric, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the vid, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.
yes I have plagiarised it from the fic commentary meme...
I'm a sucker for vid talk so.... here's a link to my vids.

Date: 2009-11-15 03:39 am (UTC)When I decided to make this vid I was in too minds how to end it. One was Dean re-thinking his decision to make the deal for Sam, the other was taking Dean right back to his childhood and some how showing different decisions he might have made to avoid the future he and Sam have. I decided that option 2 would be too hard to show, so I went for the deal option. I worried about it a bit because I wasn't sure what people would think about having Dean ponder that. But I went with it because I'm sure both Dean and Sam must think about how pivotal that moment was in the lives.
So. I had to build up the scene to get to the moment when he is watching over Sam. I wanted to show the audience what Dean was thinking about so I chose the visuals of Sam's death and Dean deal. I knew I wanted to show the shot of the road at "million miles away" as I thought it was a nice visual match with that lyric. I actually played with these clips for ages trying to get them to fit together. Initially I had some of the clips running backwards - to show a reversal of time, but I thought it looked a bit corny so changed it. I ended up only using the one of the car's headlights. But mainly because I thought it looked better than it moving the opposite way. I also had a shot of Dean sitting down instead of him rising (when he yells "what am I supposed to do"). I kept it like that until the last moment and decided to put in the shot of Dean thinking instead. I was happy I did that because I think it cements the idea that Dean is actually pondering what to do.. do I make a deal, or not...
The way the scene of Dean looking over dead Sam is shot has some wonderful clips for vidders. That lovely pan over Sam's body to Dean is just fabulous. So I had to use it. I also had to use Dean's final tear drop at the end. I placed that clip before some of the others and worked my way to it, as it were, experimenting with various clips until it looked and felt right. So most of that scene is a variety of shots to show Dean contemplating the deal.
Lots of cross dissolves in there.
I never wanted to show Dean actually deciding whether to make the deal or not. I just wanted to make the suggestion that after all he and Sam have been through it's something he might actually think about. Though I confess a little to thinking that with that tear drop Dean decided to let Sam die in peace .... but that's open to interpretation. :)
I hope that makes some sense. Most of the time it's like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. You have all these wonderful pieces that you've got to make fit somehow. :)
Thanks for allowing me to have some more natter time.
