I have to admit I have had a love/hate relationship with the way Supernatural has broken down the forth wall and made fans look at themselves. The love part is that I find it interesting as a filmic device and it fascinates me that the show has made a decision to go there but the hate part (and there may bit a more of that than love), is the way they did it.

Ever since Becky read out her fanfic story I sometimes catch myself "looking at myself" whenever I'm reading fic (particularly Wincest). Now, I realise that this is probably just me, but I haven't decided if show is making fun of or having fun with the fans when they do this. It just hasn't felt comfortable to me.

And then the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] secretlytodream made this promo for Big Bang 2010 and it kinda turned all that on it's head a bit and it filled me with glee!

To me the vid's a celebration of all thing fic and fandom. And (to me) is a bit of an "up yours" to Show for scrutinizing us somewhat unfavorably when it comes to our enjoyment of reading fanfic.

*koff* Or am I reading too much into it?! I have been doing a lot of thinking lately it would seem....

Either way. It's a wonderful vid and if I wrote fic I'd be tempted to join in!!

I think the Show's attitude is one of affectionate teasing, in exactly the same way they've mocked themselves and their writing (and of course Tv and the industry at large). Don't forget in the show - Chuck (aka Kripke), falls in love with the fangirl !

Yeah - and that's the way I would really like to think they mean it. I know how much the fans mean to them and I suppose it's important to be able to laugh at ourselves as well... which is what I mostly did during some of the episodes. When I wasn't cringing that is....

Hee! Chuck as Kripke... of course! *G*

Rob Benedict talked at the last Con how he didn't realise when he was first playing Chuck until someone on the crew pointed out - "you do realise you're playing Kripke?!"

Oh yeah, I totally know the feeling. "OF" or "WITH" - this is the question. I still try to believe in "WITH" cause it's kinda better, you know? I always thought the show (and people basically) care about fans, and stuff...
Anyway, we're in fandom to have fun, aren't we? ;)

Thanks for the rec bb! ♥

Yeah. I'm pretty sure it's meant in fun as well. It's weird though when the show itself acknowledges the people who are watching it and what they do behind the scenes.....

Oh and I meant to compliment you on the humour in the vid as well. I suppose I always connect you with drama vids but the humour was spot on. Loved the scream for instance. *G*

Awesome job honey. (Now you just gotta keep up with all those comments!!! \o/)

*hugs*

Ah, yeah, I can't make a funny video for life lol Glad you found this one a little funny! ^__^

And yes....comments are kinda killing me - they're EVERYWHERE and there're SO MANY LOL

I've been singing its praises too. It's so clever and works not only on a meta level (celebrating the wonder that is fandom), but also by achieving its objective, which is to raise awareness/excitement for the challenge.

I'm in! :-)

Yeah - works on all levels. Loved it.

I'm in!

Yay! I look forward to seeing what you write! :D

I feel you. I've been hovering between "funny" and "ehhh, awkward" ever since they went there, and every time they do so again. With a tendency towards, awkward, I fear.

Anyway, the vid is brilliant. And I'm going to loose my BB virginity this year. *nods* As an artist, not as a writer, mind you. *lol*

Yeah - it's weird, I can laugh at it and a lot of it is amusing but I kinda wish they hadn't gone down that road... I feel awkward mostly too.

And yay to loosing you BB virginity! I pondered signing up to make a vid last year, but chickened out because I am not sure how I would make a vid to a story...

I might think about it for this year though...

Looks like fun!

Oh wow, loved that vid. Thanks for pointing the way.

OMG I know what you mean about not being 100% comfortable with the whole Becky/Chuck/fandom in canon thing. I was watching Real Ghostbusters earlier today and kept alternating between laughing and cringing. One minute I'm thinking "OMG! That is so totally us!" and the next "Oh dear god, please tell me they know we're not *all* like that!"

*sigh* Somedays I miss the fourth wall.

No probs... Loki did a great job capturing the spirit of Big Bang I reckon.

*sigh* Somedays I miss the fourth wall.

Yeah - I'm not sure they really needed to go in that direction. So far the books haven't been important (other than a lead to the colt, but they didn't need the books to write that in) in terms of plot, so I figure it's all there to have some "fun" looking at fandom..... but we'll see. They might be important down the track...

Good way of putting it. I think the participation rate in the challenge is amazing. No wonder I've only read a smattering of fics from this latest year.

I know. I find the weeks that the Big Bang stories are released are pretty overwhelming. I have a feeling there may be even more this year.... ;)

Maybe. I found looking at missyjack's stats post on BB rather interesting. The overwhelming number of stories are actually J2 fics and, as she points out, equivalent to original works rather than fanfic. In the SPN fandom, BB is rather more like NaNoWriMo than a fandom challenge. I'm wondering if there's any other media fandom around right now that has anywhere near our RPS draw (music fandoms, of course, are nothing but RPF), and if so if they tend to get more participation in BB as well.

From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
Yeah I see what you mean. I suppose I have always categorised RPS as fanfiction. Written by fans for fans.... But the fact that they are indeed equivalent to original works maybe they don't exclusively come under that umbrella.

*g* And I lead a very sheltered fandom life and have only stuck to SPN, but it would be interesting to compare our BB RPS responses to others. See you got me there too - I've only ever considered BB belonging to SPN, I take it other fandoms have it too?

Yeah, I think the word "exclusively" is key because anything written primarily for a fannish audience differs from something designed to be an "original" work.

I'm curious too about where BB came from because I first ran into it in SPN (it began the year I entered the fandom). But I know others have/are doing it as well, though I don't know if that's an offshoot of its success here.
