I got a "strike one" on my You Tube account today and it's freaked me out!! (and yes, I may have been caught panicking a little tiny bit)

I can't believe it was on a vid I posted over a year ago (Heaven's Door). I always dispute my copyright infringements and usually the vids are restored. In fact I thought this one was... but.... yikes! I've been put on notice. Looks like 3 strikes and they'll delete my account. I think that may well kill me. There's a lot of work on there.

Do I make a back up account? I can't say I'm keen to but if I do do I reload my vids on that? I really don't want to do that either, but I don't want to lose everything..) I see lots of peeps make "back up accounts" - but I'm not sure what that entails.

I suppose I've been lucky so far... I have 40 vids up and this is the first time this has happened.

Damn!

Yikes! I haven't had anything like that happen to me. Why did they pick that one? Did they explain? How are you supposed to avoid more (aside from, you know, stop making vids? 0_O)

*hugs you*

I reckon I've been lucky so far... I've skirted under the radar. I mean, there are a few that I get copyright notice on and I dispute them and usually it's ok - but this time.. /o\

Heaven knows why they picked that one! (I think I made the mistake of disputing it twice or something..ack!) Sony is the tough one on copyright though. :(

Stop making vids..??! ::faints::

I guess it's a case of invest in an external hard drive, and make backup copies, then if they "kill" you, you wont loose your work! Kinda sucks, eh!

Off to check out your account - 40 vids, really? I musta been sleeping, lol!

Hee! Oh man, we have a heap of external drives. I do have all my work saved and everything, but if they delete me it means losing the comments and stuff - and even though that's probably a bit shallow they do cheer me up. I have thought about hosting my own website - but yeah. That's a big step. Maybe one day.

And yes! 40! I can't believe it. :D

(And whee, just booked tickets to Sydney for the end of the year. Maybe we can catch up again?)

That would be a definite "YES!"

Drat, suddenly felt pressure to produce!

Watched McKellan in Waiting For Godot at Opera House - phew! He's a damn fine actor; yeah, so that's a secret!

Yay! I'll let ya know the details closer to the time. :)

Oh that show was just here. I dearly wanted to see it, but didn't get a chance. I bet it was awesome. He is definitely amazing.

If you can spare the money I'd encourage you to go for hosting your own web-space. It's no way as scary as it sounds (I'm not very tech savvy and still figured it out). Added benefit is that you can stream from there as well, so you don't need to worry about places like BAM going bust.

I would love to be host my own web-space. My hubby is web designer so that end wouldn't be a problem, it might just be the cost I'd have to look into.

Thanks. :)

I'm surprised you've evaded the YT police this long!:P Hun, I'm in the same boat; have had a strike against me for a while now. As you know, I have a back-up but so far I've only used it to subscribe to vidders I don't want to lose, as well as fav'ing vids. I'll only use that account to re-upload vids if my main one is ever deleted.

For me too, it's the idea of losing all the wonderful comments. That's the real shame.

From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
Yes, I did think of you. It's kinda scary - I would hate for everything to be deleted. More so for comments and subs etc. I think I'll be too scared to dispute copyright claims anymore.

I might make a back up just in case. I'll see. Definitely if I get another strike. :(

I'm so sorry and bummed for you. You tube is the main way I watch vids, and yours are the ones I've watched again and again. I hope they go back to ignoring you again soon.

Awww - thanks hun. I seriously hope they go back to ignoring me. I'll be a little twitchy when I post my next vid. Let's hope U2 don't belong to Sony. :)

First take down notice I ever had was for U2, but can't for the life of me remember which music company it was, I'll try and look it up and let you know.

Oh no really? Eek! I have a feeling they will be closely monitored. :(

Thanks hun.

Well it seems I adopted the "Who me?" attitude to that first take down notice and obliterated all evidence - sorry.

I have found a Wiki article here about the track "One" - this says that the track belongs to UMG - not sure if everything does. If it does that's good, I've never had a problem with UMG - they tend to just claim the song and use the vid for ad space, I've never even had to put in a dispute with them.

Hope this helps.

Yeah well, I just deleted Heaven's Door. Shame, but I wanted to be safe.

And let's hope UMG own it - I've never had problems with them. I did a search on YT and found a few fanvids for U2 (not the one I'm using) - and they are still there, so fingers crossed.

thanks so much for that honey.

*ouch*

I've been lucky, first couple of times I had a copyright notice I removed the vids they scared me that much, but lately I've just been disputing merrily and have so far (touch wood - bangs head) I've not had one of these.

Not sure how a back-up account would help as wouldn't you be caught as soon as you upload? They seem much tighter on that now, I've got to the point where I upload and set it to private as I always seem to have to dispute and then once the dispute goes through then switch it over to public.

I'm really sorry if it leads to you losing all your comments. *hugs*

Yeah - I have been disputing merrily. I've never had a problem. No idea why this suddenly happened.

Ah, that's a good idea. I've only discovered recently that I can set to private. (I've never really explored YT thoroughly).

I don't think a back up will help. It seems peeps do it so they can keep their favourites and their subscriptions.

I think the real panic will set in if I get another one.

It seems particularly strange given that they contacted you about that revenue sharing deal a few months ago, right?

Re: saving comments, can you get them if you do a "Save Page As" on your comment pages?

This is why vidders need their own AO3. Does the OTW have any advice on what to do about account strikes at YouTube?

Yeah - from one extreme to the other!

Re: saving comments, can you get them if you do a "Save Page As" on your comment pages?

Hmm... I have no idea. I'll check it out.

I'll check that out as well. I have no idea what would happen if they just deleted the account - or how I would got disputing it.

And that's why I wanted to support the AO3 - I hope that gets off the ground.

Waaaa!!

Oh no! Not a strike!! *feeds you cookies*

So far I had only (quite a few) "Germany-blockages". Disputes last usually a few days and then they block it again. My country is very efficent...*headdesk*

The only one they totally blocked I disputed and lately it doesn't even mention anything on there anymore about any copyright at all (?)...*scratches head*

I usually try to use "YT-approved" music. But the copyrights keep changing. So it's never really safe...unless you sing yourself *some more headdesk*

YT has turned into some kind of pit bull, biting all the youtubers. Hope they walk away from your account.(And stay away!)

*hugs*

Hee! Pic! Perfect.... That was me!!

Germany sure is efficient. In fact the main blocks I have on my vids are to Germany. Some have "blocked in some countries" and it's always Germany.

I hope they stay away from me. Though I disputed another vid recently and I'm really worried they will give me a strike 2 on that one. Ark!!

I'll probably find out soon.

Ouch! I never dispute anything mainly because I'm too lazy. I also usually do a YT search on the audio I pick before I start vidding to see if it comes up. That way I know if it will be flagged or not in the first place.

From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
Hmmm - I usually do a search as well, though not all the time. I think I had better be more diligent in that respect. Every time I get a copyright notice I put a dispute in for "transformative works" and it's been ok. But now I think I'll be too scared to.

eeep. that's no good! I just uploaded my first ever vid to youtube the other day, and it has no music and was footage I took, but I was still kind of freaked that they'd shout at me about something. I'm quite scared of them for some reason :(

good luck!

Date: 2010-06-17 03:47 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
If it's your own footage and no music you will be totally safe. It's the music copyright that is a problem. Though as fanvids are considered "transformative works" there's a dispute procedure that usually works fine. I've been relying on that these past few years.

But, I think I might just have pushed it too far this time. I'll just have to be more careful in the future I think.

Thanks hun. :)

I actually have two strikes against me (multiple copyright violations regarding Law & Order: SVU videos, strike one made up 5 or so videos, strike 2 6 or so) along with another video that has an open copyright infringement right now (a Sesame Street vid) but it says I don't have to do anything, just to expect some possible ads to pop up. Thing is, I didn't create any of these myself like you did, I just uploaded clips. So I dunno, I have two strikes and I took all the bad ones down, but who knows? I'd hate to lose my account but there's not much I can do about it.

Ah. My strike one is for one vid only. I mean, I usually get notices on the others but they seem to be cleared up. I removed the vid to be safe. I am concerned about another claims I have in though.

I suppose I will need to be more careful in the future. :(

Thanks hun.
