Art recs! (and something about podfics...)
Aug. 7th, 2010 04:53 pmMy god there are some talented people around. I adore looking at artworks. Here's some that I've seen recently that I love:
Dean, can you see something? by the incredible
petite_madam. I love everything she does. This is adorable and yet... there's this little hint of menace. (make sure to enlarge it to read the text *g*) Wonderful.
The Winchester Brothers by
becc_j. Wow! Look at those boys! How much do they suit a Western? Love the detail in this painting. Striking.
BB art for The Hollow Valley Seriously creepy, intense and evocative. Love it.
I'm listening to
veronamay's priest!fic have you seen him whom my soul loves (finally! I've had it bookmarked forever) and I'm loving it. I worried at first because I wasn't sure how I would go listening to a New Zealand accent but the reader,
nu_breed, reads so well I've been swept up in it. She has such a lovely comforting manner (you can almost see her smiling as she reads it) that the accent doesn't matter.
I have, unfortunately, not been able to listen to some podfics because of either a very strong accent (Sam and Dean with cockney type accents just hasn't been able to work for me) or a speech pattern that's, um... annoying. I absolutely hate to criticise podfic readers because what they do is wonderful and amazing. But I suppose not everybody's voice will suit every listener.
I've discovered that I love being read to. I wonder if this is because I was read to a lot as a child? There's something innately comforting about it.
We're seeing Inception tonight! \o/ (Everybody has raved about it so I'm a little worried I'm going in with very high expectations... and then will be disappointed. But I'm sure it will as awesome as everyone is claiming).
Hope you are all having a great weekend. :)

Date: 2010-08-08 07:03 am (UTC)Maybe a podfic 101 or something.
I started a podfic once and the reader gave an upward inflection on the end of every sentence. I just couldn't listen any more because the pattern become extremely annoying. And it's strange but I can tell when a reader gets dehydrated and their speech becomes...um... sticky for want of a better word. I haven't come across background noise much - the odd text message or cat meow. :)
That said I've listened to some awesome readers and I try to make a point of letting them know.

Date: 2010-08-08 03:36 pm (UTC)i started a ML and in the beginning we really gave some good feedback, but then we kind of never opened it up and advertized and it died on me.
And yes, i've come across the ending every sentence like a question. though i got used to that. the runon and the overemphasis were too much though and I deleted unheard...
We've had long convos about this, and a lot of the hesitancy comes from the fact that it is our bodies in ways fic might not wholly be. I.e., my accent, my voice, my speech patterns are me... So to get criticized is hard in a way that vidders and fic writers always say but that might not be true in the same way?
the other thing is that podfic has very little feedback at all bc of the delay. you can never listen and respond at the same time. Often there are days and weeks between. and how often do we really go back? I've had maybe half a dozen comments about my reading that weren't from my beta and podfic cheerleader. I think more than anything we go with the if you have nothing positive to say...
Sorry...I'm letting out all my thoughts here :) But it definitely is an interesting (and just developing) issue...

Yeah, I can see that that could be a problem and I assume that podficcers do it for the love of it and not for comments they receive. I mean, all the fandom stuff we do is for the love of it, but the comments are often a nice reward. Especially when there's been a lot of work put into it. And I imagine podficcing takes a lot of time. But I think podficcers miss out on that sometimes. I know I have been guilty of that for shorter fics.
Which reminds me... time to go and leave a comment to a podficcer now. :)
ETA: I'm going to dl some of your readings. (yes, I just stalked you at audiofic. I notice you have some Sam/Dean and J2.. which I gravitate to mostly... *g*).
ETA#2 And now I've just connected with who you are....:) I've seen you mention podfics you've been doing and I've been meaning to check you out. I look forward to listening.. :)
