I was switching between view in my style and original style and became curious about what others did in regards to this and other stuff on LJ. I know I'm being nosey but I wondered if what I did was similar to you guys.

[Poll #1618224]

My answers: I view in "my style", I can't get out of the habit of html (even though rich text looks easier) and I visit LJ as often as I can. Sad but true. (though not so sad because the place makes me happy). :D Now... your turn.

Also. Welcome to new friends. Not sure what I did recently to garner the friendings but thanks. :D Drop me a line and say hi if you'd like me to friend you back. <33

I find viewing other journals in my style often "breaks" things. It's easier to just allow it to display the way the person designed it.

Yeah... I tried viewing in original style but I often have trouble actually reading some journals. As in colour and font etc. Though if it breaks up I swtich back (though I have also experienced all sorts of strangeness in "original" I just stick to what I know...

If anything is light on dark I view in my style. If your journal (for example) had fic, I would read the fic in my style, because your font is too small for me to read that much comfortably, but I wouldn't switch for just a journal entry. Often times if ppl have custom comment turned off and I'm reading fic on my iPod, I will set it to my style because that set-up is full screen so I can't make the font bigger by making just the text-box bigger. I really like to see what other people have going on in their journal styles, though, and especially in my computer browser (as opposed to on my iPod), I really like to have the pages I have open look different from each other so I can more readily identify which page is which.

Rich text is IMPOSSIBLE. I've tried to use it a couple of times on other people's computers where they had it set to be on, and I cannot for the life of me make it work. HAAAAAAAAATE. html is much easier IMO.

and "visit" makes it sound like I go away. *g* If I'm on my computer I generally have at least three and often more like 30 different LJ tabs open, and I am constantly refreshing various of them. If I'm trying to get work done, I might minimize my browser, but rarely will more than half an hour go past that I am not checking my flist or a comm. Possibly when Adam Lambert stops touring I will be able to step away for longer periods even when I am online. If I'm afk, obviously I check less. Then I just tend to check my email, because the web on my phone is not easy.

Yay, thanks for sharing that.

It's interesting that my font is small... I suppose I have no idea how it compares to other fonts and LJ styles. Probably because I've had this one since I started here and never thought to change it. I probably should investigate that. Though not really sure how... (yet *g*)

I used to view in different styles until it got so I kept changing back all the time. Though I will often switch over to see what other people have done.

And it's not just me that can't get used to rich text? I'm so used to typing up the code I'm finding it hard to used to another way. Curious though... I thought it might have been easier.

Hee! "visit" - yeah, that's my vocab. :) So um... 30 tabs eh? Wow... so that would be for individual journals? Or...? (Now I'm feeling like a newbie all over again). I just refresh my friends page or go back to the last entry I saw each time I open LJ.

Thanks so much. Interesting...

(Love your icon. Too true. :) )

LOL I love that I always think I am going on and on, but you always like it :D

Yeah, your font is about half the size of mine. Because I post a lot of fic, I have mine bigger than most people's so that it's easier for people to read. on my computer mine comes out about the size of 12 point font on word if I have my word set at 100%. Yours is more like 6. Which, it's not too hard to read for short things, just (maybe I'm getting old, or maybe it's my laser-corrected nearsightedness) strains me for more than a few hundred words.

I guess if you know nothing about html rich text might be easier, but like, getting cuts to work and anything more complicated than italics, I just can't wrap my head around it.

What I tend to do is open my email, and then if ppl have replied to comments I open all those next to my email tab. so I might have two to five of my own entries open at any given time, depending on how many I've posted and what people are still replying to. Then I have my friends page open, and open anything I want to read or comment on from there in a new tab. then, if someone does a ficrec post, I might have another set of tabs opened from that, or if it's just a few things, I'll drag them into my flist tab section. Then, with Adam on tour, I have [livejournal.com profile] teamratbert tabs open, between 2 and 20, depending on how epic the concert is and how good I am at closing the ones people aren't replying to.

Then during the day I'll read and reply to the flist posts, check my flist again and open more, reply to comments, refresh the pages of my entries to make sure I haven't missed comments, refresh the TR posts to see what Adam and his band and fans are up to. I never close my browser, and I have it set to open all the last tabs in the rare cases I do. Even in the event that doesn't work, my browser "home page" is my gmail, my flist, my twitter, and my DW, so I never ever actually 'close' LJ.

oh god. and you've got me blah blahing again and I need to finish packing! I am just always so interested in how other people use the internet and LJ. :D

Hmmm, I get confused with "my style" as sometimes when I click the link on the bar at the top of the page, it displays in the style of "my journal" which is how I read my Flist, yet sometimes it shows the page, not in "light", but sort of a "default"? Is that the word I want? Just the white page with text and the blue across the comment heading? I use the Firefox add-on that makes sure I get that, if someone has a strange text or text size somehow embeded, that using that button won't get rid of? Then I use "Readability" to remove it as I really can't manage anything else.

Rich text - I always use it, I know the tags I should use for HTML, but to be honest, although I'm a pretty quick typist, I'm very inaccurate and always leave tags all over the place. Again the Firefox add-on allows me to do THIS without HTML as well - I'm a lazy cow aren't I? *G*

Last, if I'm on the computer, I'm logged in, reading a bit, replying a bit, but, yeah, nearly every day if I can.

Filled in the poll to reflect this as well as I can.

Thank hon. I alway though "my style" meant in the style of your own journal. That's what I see anyway. (I used to think everyone had the same thing until I noticed the "view in original style"... DOH!!!

I also only just found rich text. I think if I saw that first I would have stuck with that.

Thanks so much. *smish*

From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
Hmm... I'm not sure if it's just for paid accounts. Good question. At the very top of your journal it has Use journal you are visiting and whether they are a mutual friend etc. Under that is an option to view in either your own style or the way that person has designed their journal.

Do you have that? If not, maybe it is only for paid users...*head scratch*

Naw, nothing up there. Just if the friend is mutual and "manage friends".

So you guys go and play with your posh accounts and I stick to viewing the channels the poor way... (joking, I'm joking!)

And omg the poll. By this there are nothing but LJ addicts over here. lol. Of course not me. As you can see I'm hardly ever over here, never answering your posts... :P

I'm loving the poll! I've found everyone's answers so interesting. I'm going to be very geeky and make a pie graph. And when I do I'll post it... hee! *geek* :)

Always, always in my style. Custom comment pages = DNW.

Also, I said 'other' w/r/t visiting LJ because generally it's once a day during the week, but not so often at weekends.

ETA: Rich text is EVIL. I can guarantee if you see a fic or general post where the formatting is jacked up, it's 'cause the person uses rich text.

Yeah - I'm pretty much always because I then have to go searching for tabs and buttons that are in different places.

And I was thinking about asking a question about when ppl mostly visited. I've noticed less posted on the weekends, which, to me, seems like the time people would have the most available time. But it would seem not - maybe.

Hee! Evil rich text. That makes me not feel so bad sticking to html then. :D

I veiw in others' style unless I can't read the journal, then I'll switch over. I'm nosy too and I want to check out everyone's "decorating" hehehehe.

As for RTF, it's unpredictable, works great one day, not the next. So I set up with html and flip over to see if it looks ok.

Yeah - I'm thinking I should switch more often to see what others are doing. I know some people have some great looking journals.

And I keep hearing that about RTF... I've been wanting to use it more often, but if I have it on I automatically start typing html. Then it doesn't work...

In all honesty: I hate my style. The only place I want to look like my place IS my place, damnit! *lol* And if a post really is unreadable, I'm sorry, I backbutton.

HTML. ♥

As for the visits . . . All of the above? No, not quite. *gg* It depends. Sometimes, several times a day, and then I'm not logging in for days at a time.

So you hate your own journal style? Or the option to "view in your style"? (Can you tell it's past my bedtime!?). Personally I find it easier to view everything in one style (my style) , then I'm not getting confused.. (that's probably more about my age /o\).

Though I've been told my font is small, so I probably should look at that. I tend to just zoom in on the screen if I'm reading fic.

And yes...I didn't really cater for people who fluctuate on their visits to LJ. Though "other" could cover that I suppose. :)

Thanks honey.

Technically I read a lot of stuff in "my style" because I read straight from my Reading List page. In fact, on DW I don't even need to click on a link to open the lj-cuts because I can just open selected ones. So I'd say 80% of what I read or skim is done in my style.

The major exception is fic and I find I usually have to format=light those to be able to read them. I don't know what the obsession is that people have these days with grey font. It makes stuff on a white background barely readable, even at the largest font.

From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
Oh you have a Reading List page? Is like a memory or separate tab or something? I'd love a way of keep track of the stuff I want to read. I keep them all in memories

And there's a format=light?? *head shake* I know very little it would seem. I usually zoom in on any fic I want to read and it's in my style so I can read comfortably in a font and colour that I now and like.

Thank for the input.

Sorry, a "Reading List" is what it's called over on DW -- I think most people call it a "Friends page" here. I'll open tabs if it's something I'm going to read later, which is most often fic as I'll reply to general posts while I'm reading. I like seeing people's differing LJ layouts but unfortunately free choice means that people make a lot of awful ones when it comes to readability. I don't understand how they're able to use their own account!

Putting a "?format=light" command at the end of any LJ address will convert it to the default view for LJ, which is simple black on white. I'm guessing that early on in LJ's development they realized people needed to be able to work around all the visitor unfriendly formatting choices.
