The worse thing about NOT posting a reaction immediately after watching is having a whole night to think about it. Made for a restless night. Damn show! (must try not to do that again).

Anyway..

Insta!reaction would have been: 90% Squeeeeeeeeee!! and Loooooooveeee!! with 10% Hurty..

Counting the ways....

1. Ewwwwwww. Love it when show does GROSS, even if I might have had to turn my head away a couple of times. :) I really didn't expect that guys face to peel off.

2. Do I even need to scream SHIRTLESS boys??!! I know I don't. But I will...ARGHHHHHHHHHH... I was damn close to licking the screen. Just sayin'.

3. Sam paying for sex. Ok. Gonna get serious here for a minute because I really loved how this spoke so much about Sam at the moment. A word that comes to mind about Sam at the moment is efficient. Just something about the way he goes about things (everything in fact) and it struck me that it's the same for sex. He wants it, be buys it, he moves on. Having to go and "pick up" up sex would require an energy I feel he just doesn't want to use. Emotion he would have to fake. I think it also shows us that some off the "old" Sam is there. I've always got the feeling that Sam cares deeply in relationships. Passionately. Sam can't give that to anyone at the moment so I felt that he was sparing someone some heartache. He's cold... but not that cold. Though I adored that OF COURSE she'd do it for nothing. I mean, MY GOD!! You are damn fine Jared!!

4. Castiel!!!! I can't believe that one of my fav things about this episode was Castiel (I'm usually pretty *meh* about Cas, not sure why but I never really knew where he stood and mostly his character just confused me). But this! Not only did Misha bring a wonderful new energy to the screen he also brought a very solid feeling Castiel. I clicked with him from the very first appearance and stayed with him until the end. I think the thing I'm loving the most is that he is ALL ANGEL! He still has the lovely dorky side, but he just seemed more confident in his role (role on earth that is..) and that, in turn, set me at ease. Love the zipping all over the place.

5. "Dean and I have a special bond". Hee! Aside from the shout out to Dean/Cas shippers I kinda love that this was said out loud. OF COURSE they have a special bond!! He rescued him from hell after all! But it was Sam's good old fashioned bitch!face that was a gem to see AND Dean's gorgeous puzzlement. Great moment.

6. Almost every line that came out of Cas's mouth. :D

7. Torturing the kid. Er, no... I didn't love that they did that but I thought the scene was very interesting. I think it was there for many reasons but mostly to show how detached and different Sam was. But I came away not really seeing such a different Sam. Sure... different from Season 1 and 2, but this was the Sam we saw when he was willing to sacrifice Nancy. Certainly the Sam we saw when Dean had died for the last time in Mystery Spot. It's not such a leap to see Sam like this.

We're back to efficient Sam. I'm sure he wasn't happy that they had to torture a child but Sam sees beyond that now. They need info. This is how to get it. It's certainly more evidence that he has lost his empathy but I think Dean probably needed to see this to start his thinking that something is wrong with Sam.

8. Dueling cars!!! My absolute fav moment! I commented or maybe posted somewhere that I really wanted the two cars to be around for a while because I thought it would provide a lot of opportunity to have some fun. I'm sad that it's the end of the 2 cars but I LOVE that they had the kind of fun I imagined before we saw the death of Sam's car. Dean racing ahead of Sam?!! Priceless!! Oh boys... it was so nice to see that (close to) friendly rivalry between you again. And seeing them getting out of their respective cars at the same time?!! DID THINGS TO ME!!! <333 (oh and Sam's car was very efficient - so suited the Sam we have at the moment).

9. Dean in dad mode to Ben and Dean dreaming of Lisa = *hearts* (glad there was a little link back to them instead of an instant "they're gone now").

10. EVERYTHING ELSE!

And....

Just how "wrong" is Sam?! I suppose some part of me wishes we didn't have to have the boys so at odds with each other (still). It just plain hurts. The moments I enjoyed most in the episode were when they were just getting on with things. Researching, trading banter, fighting side by side AND did you notice Sam gave Dean a little concerned look when Cas cut his hand? It was very slight... but I'm sure it was there. I was looking for it (I always do) and I was rewarded with a little look. (I will take ANYTHING at the moment!).

More and more I am seeing purely survivor Sam. And I'm not sure if it's only from what he went through in hell or from his time being a full-on hunter without Dean. Probably both. This is who Sam needs to be to get through it all. I don't mind him actually. Sam kicking in that door...?? *guh* Sure, I want to see empathetic, caring Sammy back but I'm finding this side of Sam interesting to watch. And I am DYING to know what happened to him (and damn I hope there's a really cool payoff!). They keep hinting at something so there's got to be a reveal at some point.

I was more engaged in this episode that the past ones. Not exactly sure why. I think probably because it was pretty tight and well paced and Team Free Will brought a gleeful energy that was contagious. The boys talked (wheeeee over the hood of the Impala) a bit, they're back in the Impala together, they're hitting the road.... life goes on. Of course there has to be some brotherly angst. There's ALWAYS been brotherly angst. It's a major component to the story arc. I just hope they don't take tooooo long to get back into step and start discovering that they can be more than just family. They can be friends also.

Yes, so much to all of this! I loved the Sam and Dean parts and am so intrigued by all the mystery. I'm also hopeful that whatever is "wrong" with Sam can be fixed at some point, but I also like seeing such a competent, non-angsty Sam. I also find this Sam as a nice change from the Sam who could do nothing right, no matter how hard he tried.

I will admit to loving Dean especially hard this season. It's just so good to see a healthier, non-suicidal Dean who has learned that there is some pleasure to be found in the world. Last season, Dean just made me sad. (Until the famous eye-wink at Sam) This year, he makes me smile.

So glad to have someone to squee with! &hearts

Oh yes indeed! If fact seeing these different sides to the boys has been wonderful. Dean doesn't have that permanent scowl on his face and Sam just gets on with things. I know they're still sorting stuff out, but each week I'm interested to see what aspect we may see now.

"...survivor Sam...efficient Sam...he was sparing someone some heartache." Himself?

I love Jared's work in this ep. That smile over the Impala: "I'm fine!" Umm... no!

Finally he is being given more to do; so often seemed to be just Dean's side-kick little brother! He is clearly operating at a surface level, and in total control of himself. He's a man doing a job, much like a soldier maybe, and he's grown up, (at last!) I like this man, not overly harsh, but not taking crap either.

I hope angsty Sam isn't revisited too much; he was the HERO who took the fall to save the world. I was so relieved Dean reminded us all of that fact.

During season five I don't remember re-watching any eps. This one three times already! lol! *Blush*

Himself?

Oh yes. I can see that. The guards are up and his is so protecting himself from.... well, everything probably.

I love Jared's work in this ep.

Oh so did I! Doesn't he seem to have just slid so comfortably into this Sam's skin? He is no longer a boy, but a man. In fact that really struck me when they were working together. No longer "the boys"... but "the men". (though I will always think of them as boys.. >3

Three times!! You go girl!! (or just that opening scene of jared...*koff*??)

Thanks for your reaction post, I always enjoy them. It's been very quite on LJ following the last episode (compared to the first two) and since I'm geographically challenged and have to watch the episodes a day later I was a bit worried about what it might mean.

@7 I think for me the difference between season six Sam and before is that before he seemed more conflicted about having to do bad things "for the greater good" and it was clear (at least from his facial expression, but often also from the dialog) that he was aware of that what he had to do was going to hurt somebody. In this episode he did not seem to consider the wrongness of torturing a kid, and even when Dean checked in with him his acknowledgement was more of a lip-service.

@4 I enjoyed Cas, too. There's a nice change of attitude there. Last season he seemed in a perpetual state of confusion and was trying hard to figure out human behaviour. This season he's given up on that and is demanding that Sam & Dean accommodate him being from a different .... culture. As he should.
"Sam, Dean, my ‘people skills’ are ‘rusty.’ Pardon me, but I have spent the last ‘year’ as a multi-dimensional
wavelength of celestial intent."
" ...it leaves a mark. - What, like a shirt tag at camp? - I don't know"

@5 "Dean and I have a more profound bond. I was not going to mention it. Cas, sweetie, it's OBVIOUS. There are movies being made about you and Dean. You really need to check out youtube.

@9 That. Just that.

Now all that's left to do is to hope that Dean joins Sam in his morning work-out...

Hey! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I love hearing what peeps think. :)

Yeah - there is definitely that. Like when Sam was stuffing that women the car truck at the end of S4. He was totally conflicted. We could see it, but went ahead anyway. I see this as a progression from that. He's been able to do the bad for the (perceived) good. Now he does the "bad" and just doesn't bother with the emotion he should feel. It's very sad, but it's as though he's somehow been heading toward this over the last couple of seasons. The switch off. (I saw this in the way he dispatched Brady as well).

@4. Those lines of Cas's were fantastic. (misha must have loved it!)

Now all that's left to do is to hope that Dean joins Sam in his morning work-out...

THIS!!!! See, I reckon this is Sam's morning routine and really it shouldn't change once they start sharing a hotel room again!!! and then Dean would have to join him of course! SQUEEEE (now I need fic!!)

There was a lot here I did like, have to admit I'm liking Sam more and more, yeah, I know he's *wrong* somewhere, but there's far more layers of him now on screen and more reactions to look for - hope he dials up the snark too, Dean and Sam are such a matched pair when it comes to bitching. Please can we keep more Sam on screen and let us watch and see how things are going for him and stop everyone else telling us how wrong he is.

Enjoyed Castiel in this one too, kind of think an angel of the lord should be a pretty much arrogant, efficient SOBs so that was all on the plus side for me. Pity we lost Rafael's meat suit - shame, for a ruthless archangel he had the perfect pitch. Not sure about Balthazar - hmmm - nothing really new there for me, kind of like Crowley really.

Most on the plus side was Dean telling Castiel to remember about the sacrifice Sam made - yeah, go Dean, at least someone acknowledges it, funnily enough Dean was the one right through the end of last season to say that Sam did what he had to do and deserved his place in heaven, so I really liked hearing that.

However, that very same thing is the great big minus in this, that we now seem to have a NEW apocalypse - or rather the continuation of the old one - and that somehow makes me very sad. I really was hoping for a new direction, but in going back and rehashing this with better more powerful angels it's feeling to me as though the writers will draw a line under what Sam did to save the world - *sigh* - I know, I think I'm getting ahead of myself and I'll wait and see, but right now I'm really not happy about this development. It was a huge thing Sam did - took on and defeated the very Devil himself and although I wondered about Lucifer really being gone or Sam being without his soul, surely those are all things Castiel would have seen, so I'm edgy about where they're taking this now that the apocalypse is back on the table.

Other thing that annoyed me was the hooker *date* line - if you liked it then fine, but that sort of thing pisses me off in the extreme. But hey, no biggie, wouldn't be SPN without a few things pissing me off regularly!

Hey Ellie! I always love hearing your thoughts. :)

Please can we keep more Sam on screen and let us watch and see how things are going for him and stop everyone else telling us how wrong he is.

Yeah, we just haven't had much Sam POV have we?!. I remember at the beginning of S4 just not getting any sense of where Sam was and then we had I Know What You Did.. it took us that long to know what was going on with him. I'm wondering if we'll get the same this season. I'm thinking yes. I hoping we get something soon.

was Dean telling Castiel to remember about the sacrifice Sam made -

Oh yes. And Dean telling Cas to answer Sam if he calls was a great moment. <3 It would be nice if that sacrifice was indeed acknowledged more, but I think the sheer fact that Dean has rejoined him (and very quickly) shows the depth of his respect and love for Sam. Good for him for calling it too!

that very same thing is the great big minus in this, that we now seem to have a NEW apocalypse

Yes. (Hee! and I did see that on your post on that)...I was under the impression that we were done with the apocalypse story line. I'm not entirely sure why we need to go into another full on myth arc. Surely killing monsters and trying to get the brothers on the same page would be enough. It would be enough for me. I'm curious to see where they go with this one.

And yeah! What about the acknowledgement of what Sam did?! Good call! I have a feeling though that that will never really be acknowledged. Just knowing the way the show goes. I hope that both Sam and Dean recognise what they've achieved - and we see that at some point. (I remember that sense of achievement after they killed the YED for example. They actually saved the world this time... they need to kick back and enjoy that HUGE achievement as some stage).

Other thing that annoyed me was the hooker *date* line

Yeah. I thought that might peeve a few people. After being thoroughly distract by Sam's bod, I was looking more at the whole connotation of where Sam is at mentally. It was so telling about his state of mind. But you're right. There has to be something that gets us going otherwise it would be Supernatural!

Thanks babe! Love your thinky thoughts...

I love that Castiel is a full on angel and not the wishy washy confused one. I like that he has his own plans and ideas that differ from the boys. It means that Sam and Dean are for sure a team against the world ;)

Loved the banter and car rivalry and I too wished Sammy's car hadn't died *pouts* but I guess deep down I knew it was coming, I mean the Impala is the only girl that should be in the spot light ;)

Loved loved Sam's naked scenes, I mean yeh, my heart skipped a beat and I literally saw it all in slow mo, which was awesome for me ♥. Your assessment of Sam is interesting and it's what I was thinking too, it's not a different Sam and it doesn't mean he's evil because he pays for sex. I mean Dean has done it for so long. So, sure it might feel weird seeing it happen, but the way it went down was very ... efficient ;)

I really liked the episode, however I was hoping to see more Sam and Dean. To me it just seemed like there was too much angels involved and not enough of the boys being involved with them, at least not on screen. It was a good epi though.

Gonna write up my review sometime this week. Great post!

Oh yes. I didn't see it as an evil action as all. Rather just a means to an end. I mean, there's no way Sam would have paid for it in the past (in fact in the beginning of S4 I remember him being most put out that Dean suggested he had paid for (who we later learn is) Ruby. It clearly shows a change in him.

I was hoping to see more Sam and Dean.

Yeah. I can always go more Sam and Dean. I think I'm pleased just to see them together at the moment - having them in the same motel room was nice. But yeah, I think people are divided about the angel story line coming back in and taking up so much time. I think they wanted to bring back Misha (and therefore Cas) and so an angel storyline had to be created. Maybe. I'll be interested to see how it pans out, that's for sure.

Cheers!

I was very engaged with all the brotherly character stuff. I just don't care about the angels. I have nothing against Cas. He's a nice character. But I can't help but think there's no place for him or his brethren now that the Apocalypse is over. I know Misha is very popular. But I'd almost rather see him get a spin-off or something. I don't want him to be shoehorned into the SPN universe.

In other news, I'm utterly convinced--Sam is missing part or all of his soul. That's what's happening here. And I think that's what the big reveal is going to be in the Veritas episode. (And I didn't put in spoiler space because this is pure speculation on my part! *g*)

Yes I think Sam is operating without his soul - whoever raised him from Hell is likely the same being (Archangel?) collecting souls, and has held onto Sam's. I'm thinking this "being" is powerful and can mask the fact that Sam's "emptiness" from other celestial beings (like Cas). My best guess so far for the collector of souls - Raphael. More souls = more power, all in his bid to take over Heaven.

Can't wait to see how this all plays out!

I know Misha is very popular.

Yes and I think that's why we have more angel story line this season. It's a case of, we want to keep Misha, how can we work it in..? I'm just glad I have a better sense of him this time round. He might flit in and out and not dominated toooo much of the arc. (though I figure we were just introduced to the major myth arc this season...)

I'm utterly convinced--Sam is missing part or all of his soul.

Yeah. I'm really liking this idea. It does indeed feel like some of his soul is missing. (and there's already been "soul" talk, so yeah. Could definitely be a possibility). Wouldn't it be interesting if part of the arc is them having either try and "find" it, or work out how to fix Sam without it. Hmmmm....I'm not sure when that ep is due (though I did see the "soon"), but I'm hoping we don't have to wait too long to find out.

Thanks popping by hon! *clings* as we work our way through the season.

Yes and yes and MOAR yes to all your thoughts above.

I had held out some probably less than logical hope that Sam's Dodge might last for a while longer (I know he couldn't have it forever but still!) but I did so love that he got the line in about the mileage - that's our Sam, thinking about the environment :)

I did indeed have to do a eulogy post for said Dodge - it was only fitting. Here's hoping the next ten weeks fly by for you and me!

EXACTLY. Whenever someone goes all, uh, Sam's so different, I feel the need to ask them if they even watch MS (and the latter half of S3). He's not that far off, it's his way to cope and also how he gets without Dean. Makes perfect sense to me.

Yes indeed. Sure there are certainly "elements" missing (and I really like ancastar's belief that he might be missing part of his soul), but some of his actions are familiar. He's always been bordering on this type of behaviour. I think his time in hell and hunting without Dean has tipped him over the edge.

It's interesting to see this side of Sam, but I can't wait to find out what's really going on with him.

I have so much love for this ep I can't even!! They have found such a great rhythm, mixing the humor with the angst, the brilliant one-liners with the questionable decisions. I can't wait to see how this all plays out, Cas's storyline, the Campbells, Dean's 'new' life on the road and Sam ... what is going on with Sam??

Having to go and "pick up" up sex would require an energy I feel he just doesn't want to use. Emotion he would have to fake.
That makes a lot of sense to me! I get the feeling Sam keeps pushing himself so hard and clings to discipline so feriociously because he tries not to deal with something.

They have found such a great rhythm,

Yeah - I love it when episodes get the mix right. That one certainly had all the ingredients. :)

I get the feeling Sam keeps pushing himself so hard and clings to discipline so feriociously because he tries not to deal with something.

Absolutely. Beside the fact that we got to see Sam's bod, there was something quite important about the way he was exercising. Almost military. I think perhaps they need to keep showing us his morning exercise routine!

Very much like your reasoning on why Sam paid for sex.

This ep was like Castiel realizing his potential as a character. The S4 BAMFness and fierce energy, and S5's emotion and vulnerability, joined into one package. I'm so excited what they did here.

Dueling cars! Boys in suits! They were in research mode! Sam kicking in a door! *happy*

Survivor Sam, yes. It is very sad to see these changes in him but there are little tells, Sam's still in there somewhere and I really want to see how this plays out. Maybe he really isn't suffering from PTSD, but he has had to shut himself off quite a lot to keep from having it, to keep from falling apart. I loved the conversation across the Impala, particularly the acknowledgment that Sam's lack of breakdown vs. Dean's response is not a question of strength, just that they're different people who process things differently.

You know, my first thought was that people would be up in arms about Sam paying for sex and probably that whole scene, but I think it was such an important moment showing us exactly where Sam is at at the moment. I remember in Lazarus Rising he was most indignant when Dean suggested he had paid for sex and now....well... more evidence that this is a very changed Sam. The whole thing - exercise and all, was very military.

This ep was like Castiel realizing his potential as a character.

Oh yes. It just felt so confident or something. The Cas we saw when he first arrived (only with more humour!!). I'm glad they didn't play his as the comic relief (as they could have done).. he has real purpose and strength which I hope remains for a while.

Maybe he really isn't suffering from PTSD, but he has had to shut himself off quite a lot to keep from having it, to keep from falling apart.

Yes. Actually I'm beginning to like the idea that ancastar mentioned above - that he might be missing part of his soul. The part (maybe) that made him empathetic and caring. With the mention of souls in this episode there might be something in that. Though, of course, who knows. Sam seems to know something is wrong with him but he doesn't seem to care. Hmm... curiouser and curiouser..

Looking forward to the next ep. Though I am assuming we are in for a mini break with the "soon" preview. :(

Yup! I feel the same way, especially about Castiel. I hope they keep hm consistently characterized this season.

Above all I hope for that. I was surprised they were coming back with full on angel arc (I knew Misha was back, but wasn't sure in what capacity), I sincerely hope that they have an interesting plan for all that considering we've kinda been there already.

We'll see! :)

I completely agree about Sam being in "efficient" mode. Even when the escort came out of the bathroom he had already moved on and was just waiting for her to go.

My absolute moment of glee in this ep was Sam twitting Dean about the Impala vs. Charger gas mileage. That was just a very brief glimpse of something I imagine Season 1 Sammy would have said to rile his big brother. It suggested to me what Sam mentioned in 6x01, that everything is better with Dean there, and that extends to Sam remembering how to interact with people. Cas's people skills aren't the only ones that are rusty.

Yes, yes... moving on. It was almost as if he has a check list. Put petrol in the car - check, have sex - check, exercise - check, tell Dean what to do - check. ;)

Cas's people skills aren't the only ones that are rusty.

Oh so very much this! Sam has indeed forgotten how to interact properly. It's been said that Dean will bring him around. I'd love to see that be the case. I really hope we don't have the two of them fighting in this season...
