6.04 Episode reaction.
Oct. 16th, 2010 09:30 pmOMG! How awesome was that?! I just. I can't believe how much I thoroughly enjoyed that episode, considering the boys were hardly in it. And as much as I love Bobby I wasn't sure I was going to be able to take a whole episode of him. WRONG!!
It was.... JOYOUS!
Counting the ways....
1. I really loved the script. It was witty and made so many (OMG YAY!) awesome observations and call backs to almost friggin' EVERYTHING we know about Bobby. Even... EVEN why he could translate Japanese which he did in Yellow Fever. JOY!
2. It never felt overly heavy (which, oh Lordy yes, show can do overly heavy sooo well!), nor just a comedic "filler" (which, yep - it does that well too). Sure, it dealt with some dark issues but it was constantly tempered with quirky moments that just really made the whole viewing experience so very entertaining.
3. RUFUS!!! BOBBY AND RUFUS!! RUFUS AND BOBBY!! How awesome were those two together?! So much love for the way they played their relationship. They had a lovely sense of depth and I loved how well Rufus knew Bobby. There was a real sense of brotherhood and family. Awwww.... I got warm fuzzies from those two Also great also to see two seasoned hunters workin' it!
4. Judy = \o/ (great use of a past character...PLEASE DON'T KILL HER!). Hee! "Put your rulers away". Dick length comes up a couple of times in this ep. (*snerk*) And Marcy = <333 I really loved that whole next door neighbor thing. HA!! Poor Bobby. I friggin' laughed out LOUD when she was standing there covered in blood and Boddy's all..."I thought it was broke"... Oh Bobby. So smart and yet so clueless. (And I really think there's a nod here to Jim Beaver saying he wants romantic scenes and here they are setting it all up only for it to go terribly wrong. HA! Missed out again Jim).
5. Ok, damnit. I even enjoyed Crowley. Yes, yes I moaned about him before (not the actor, the character), but he had such a great progression here. And I loved how "fake" the crying over the son was. For a moment I thought... oh that's awful acting, and then it clicked. Loved all that. So glad they didn't kill Crowley off. (I thought for a minute they might) I look forward to future eps with him - I figure he'll be connected to what's up with Sam somehow....
6. Best bit - Dean trying to have deep and meaningfuls with Bobby and Bobby is.... distracted! Yay! I just love the call out to how angsty the boys and the show can be and "IT NOT ALL ABOUT THEM"!! (which... err... hello.. *g*). Dean is soooo earnest and I'm like... oh you can't have this conversation now. I WANT this conversation. I do. Like YESTERDAY! But I didn't want it at THAT moment. And they didn't have it and I love Show for doing it like that. Acknowledged there's a problem. But we ain't dealing with it now. :D :D
7. Show referencing itself usually bothers me big time. But not tonight. It wasn't so heavy that it became annoying. Just quiet little observations. Like Crowley's "This is how this conversation will go" at the end, the chick flick thing, Sam being chucked around by a supernatural entity in the background while Dean's on the phone calling Bobby, even Bobby himself... Yep! So cool. Show KNOWS itself soooo well! *G*
8. Loved that Show seemed to address some of the criticisms that Bobby, as a character, is only there to provide quick answers for the boys in order to move the plot along etc. It was GREAT to see that there is actually a lot of work involved for Bobby. It added such a realism and depth to the character. More so than any other episode has done do far. (whereas I found the other Bobby episodes about his wife a bit..um.. ho-hum, this one didn't have that feel to me)
9. The directing. Ok, so normally I wouldn't take much notice of this but as our boy was at the helm I started taking myself out of the action to "see" what he was doing. Namely the framing and stuff, but really? That's too hard. It's not a fun way to watch it and I stopped. It felt like any other SPN episode, in terms of the way it looked (and I loved that he followed a lot of the framing that'd you'd see from other SPN directors..) but there was something in particular that Jensen can be credited with I think. And that's the performances. I thought Jim was at his best in this episode. He hit just the right note. I credit a director with that. And a scene I loved (and felt very "Jensen like") was the bit when Bobby was closing the door when the neighbor was saying goodbye and they both were doing those little turn backs. Love the way that was filmed. YAY JENSEN!! You nailed it all honey. <33
10. We got more hints of the "weird" monsters that will be, no doubt, be popping up all over the place in S6.
11. Fergus sold his soul for a bigger dick!?! Oh boy! I bet he regrets that...)
12. Sam and Dean.... OMG!! Flew OVERSEAS!! I was going to be totally pissed off if they didn't make some reference to Dean flying. \o/ They did.
13. Boys squashed together in a wee British car!! \o/ (Again, loved the acknowledgment that "we end the show with the boys in the car together"... hee! Even if it's them being all squashed together they will end it like that... ::koff::
14. Boys knee to knee on hotel beds. Oh yes. That's definitely becoming a "thing" I keep looking out for. :D :D
15. "Weekend at Bobby's" is a play on the movie "Weekend at Bernies" yeah? Hee! I chuckled when Rufus turned up with a dead body. Oh show...
16. Sam telling Dean not to torch Crowley's bones. "A deal's a deal".... Oh Sammy. A little hint there me thinks?
And now... one thing that completely PISSED ME OFF!!!
I have be trying FOREVER to think of a song for Bobby. I've wanted to make some sort of Bobby vid for ages, but I just haven't found the right song. And THERE IT WAS!! DAMNIT! Just like that. Perfect. Even love that they referenced the song later in the script. Bobby sure was cool playing his hand.
I did have some little niggly criticisms but nothing I'm going to bother with here. I can move on from them when I have so many other things to be happy about. :)
So there you go. Can you tell I kinda loved it?! I think maybe because I was totally ready to be a bit "meh" about it, I was taken by surprise. It had a bit of everything and even though the boys didn't feature much their presence was strongly felt. And to be honest? I enjoyed not having to worry about them for a change. It was almost like relief. That's not to say I'm not looking forward to angsting over them again in the future. I think Show knew we needed a little break...
I HEART YOU SHOW!

*hugs* (hee! And driving on the different side. I didn't pick that up - I think I was concentrating on poor Jared having to fold himself up to get in that seat. Oh and how close they were to each other.... *g*)
