6.04 Episode reaction.
Oct. 16th, 2010 09:30 pmOMG! How awesome was that?! I just. I can't believe how much I thoroughly enjoyed that episode, considering the boys were hardly in it. And as much as I love Bobby I wasn't sure I was going to be able to take a whole episode of him. WRONG!!
It was.... JOYOUS!
Counting the ways....
1. I really loved the script. It was witty and made so many (OMG YAY!) awesome observations and call backs to almost friggin' EVERYTHING we know about Bobby. Even... EVEN why he could translate Japanese which he did in Yellow Fever. JOY!
2. It never felt overly heavy (which, oh Lordy yes, show can do overly heavy sooo well!), nor just a comedic "filler" (which, yep - it does that well too). Sure, it dealt with some dark issues but it was constantly tempered with quirky moments that just really made the whole viewing experience so very entertaining.
3. RUFUS!!! BOBBY AND RUFUS!! RUFUS AND BOBBY!! How awesome were those two together?! So much love for the way they played their relationship. They had a lovely sense of depth and I loved how well Rufus knew Bobby. There was a real sense of brotherhood and family. Awwww.... I got warm fuzzies from those two Also great also to see two seasoned hunters workin' it!
4. Judy = \o/ (great use of a past character...PLEASE DON'T KILL HER!). Hee! "Put your rulers away". Dick length comes up a couple of times in this ep. (*snerk*) And Marcy = <333 I really loved that whole next door neighbor thing. HA!! Poor Bobby. I friggin' laughed out LOUD when she was standing there covered in blood and Boddy's all..."I thought it was broke"... Oh Bobby. So smart and yet so clueless. (And I really think there's a nod here to Jim Beaver saying he wants romantic scenes and here they are setting it all up only for it to go terribly wrong. HA! Missed out again Jim).
5. Ok, damnit. I even enjoyed Crowley. Yes, yes I moaned about him before (not the actor, the character), but he had such a great progression here. And I loved how "fake" the crying over the son was. For a moment I thought... oh that's awful acting, and then it clicked. Loved all that. So glad they didn't kill Crowley off. (I thought for a minute they might) I look forward to future eps with him - I figure he'll be connected to what's up with Sam somehow....
6. Best bit - Dean trying to have deep and meaningfuls with Bobby and Bobby is.... distracted! Yay! I just love the call out to how angsty the boys and the show can be and "IT NOT ALL ABOUT THEM"!! (which... err... hello.. *g*). Dean is soooo earnest and I'm like... oh you can't have this conversation now. I WANT this conversation. I do. Like YESTERDAY! But I didn't want it at THAT moment. And they didn't have it and I love Show for doing it like that. Acknowledged there's a problem. But we ain't dealing with it now. :D :D
7. Show referencing itself usually bothers me big time. But not tonight. It wasn't so heavy that it became annoying. Just quiet little observations. Like Crowley's "This is how this conversation will go" at the end, the chick flick thing, Sam being chucked around by a supernatural entity in the background while Dean's on the phone calling Bobby, even Bobby himself... Yep! So cool. Show KNOWS itself soooo well! *G*
8. Loved that Show seemed to address some of the criticisms that Bobby, as a character, is only there to provide quick answers for the boys in order to move the plot along etc. It was GREAT to see that there is actually a lot of work involved for Bobby. It added such a realism and depth to the character. More so than any other episode has done do far. (whereas I found the other Bobby episodes about his wife a bit..um.. ho-hum, this one didn't have that feel to me)
9. The directing. Ok, so normally I wouldn't take much notice of this but as our boy was at the helm I started taking myself out of the action to "see" what he was doing. Namely the framing and stuff, but really? That's too hard. It's not a fun way to watch it and I stopped. It felt like any other SPN episode, in terms of the way it looked (and I loved that he followed a lot of the framing that'd you'd see from other SPN directors..) but there was something in particular that Jensen can be credited with I think. And that's the performances. I thought Jim was at his best in this episode. He hit just the right note. I credit a director with that. And a scene I loved (and felt very "Jensen like") was the bit when Bobby was closing the door when the neighbor was saying goodbye and they both were doing those little turn backs. Love the way that was filmed. YAY JENSEN!! You nailed it all honey. <33
10. We got more hints of the "weird" monsters that will be, no doubt, be popping up all over the place in S6.
11. Fergus sold his soul for a bigger dick!?! Oh boy! I bet he regrets that...)
12. Sam and Dean.... OMG!! Flew OVERSEAS!! I was going to be totally pissed off if they didn't make some reference to Dean flying. \o/ They did.
13. Boys squashed together in a wee British car!! \o/ (Again, loved the acknowledgment that "we end the show with the boys in the car together"... hee! Even if it's them being all squashed together they will end it like that... ::koff::
14. Boys knee to knee on hotel beds. Oh yes. That's definitely becoming a "thing" I keep looking out for. :D :D
15. "Weekend at Bobby's" is a play on the movie "Weekend at Bernies" yeah? Hee! I chuckled when Rufus turned up with a dead body. Oh show...
16. Sam telling Dean not to torch Crowley's bones. "A deal's a deal".... Oh Sammy. A little hint there me thinks?
And now... one thing that completely PISSED ME OFF!!!
I have be trying FOREVER to think of a song for Bobby. I've wanted to make some sort of Bobby vid for ages, but I just haven't found the right song. And THERE IT WAS!! DAMNIT! Just like that. Perfect. Even love that they referenced the song later in the script. Bobby sure was cool playing his hand.
I did have some little niggly criticisms but nothing I'm going to bother with here. I can move on from them when I have so many other things to be happy about. :)
So there you go. Can you tell I kinda loved it?! I think maybe because I was totally ready to be a bit "meh" about it, I was taken by surprise. It had a bit of everything and even though the boys didn't feature much their presence was strongly felt. And to be honest? I enjoyed not having to worry about them for a change. It was almost like relief. That's not to say I'm not looking forward to angsting over them again in the future. I think Show knew we needed a little break...
I HEART YOU SHOW!

I think so. I totally forgot to include the line, but it struck me as relevant.

Date: 2010-10-16 03:33 pm (UTC)Btw, I'm a newbie to your journal/flist. Found you through my old fandom's flist somehow and wouldn't you know, I was up late last night catching up on all your vids. You are freaking awesome, Mama! I know how much work goes into each of them, and I can tell the love you have for the boys, the show, and the creation of each vids. Thanks for that. Now, we must roll the end credit of this chick flick? ::hugs::

Date: 2010-10-16 03:51 pm (UTC)Loved the little bits we got of the boys in this one. Dean's "More important than Sam???" made the season so far for me. Just so much love to see them a little lighter - all of them.
This was a very good episode. Thanks for writing an exuberant commentary - made me happy over my morning coffee! &hearts all around. :)

Date: 2010-10-16 03:56 pm (UTC)Seriously. I was predisposed to liking the episode because I was so proud that Jensen had directed it. But I also was "meh" about knowing it wouldn't have much of the boys in it.
I was actually surprised about how much the boys *were* in it! I expected less than that. Plus I love the way it was done, because when the boys were there, it was like concentrated Sam & Dean goodness! Probably more Sam & Dean goodness than we've gotten in all of season six so far!
Plus I also loved Rufus and Bobby and Crowley. And the sheriff and Bobby's neighbor. The wood chipper scene was priceless.
I think the episode style did feel like SPN, but it also felt different somehow. I don't know much about directing at all. And what I've learned, I've learned through this show. But I feel like that something different might be the touch of this director. I'm not sure exactly what was different. But there was something a little different to me in the feel. Not a bad different at all. Just different. And the fact that I liked 6x04 perhaps slightly more than 6x01-6x03 also says it's a good difference.
Hmmm. I know writing has to have a lot to do with this (again, ignorant of industry details here), but I wonder if that concentrated Sam & Dean goodness...that felt a bit like S2ish Sam & Dean goodness...might have something to do with the fact that I think Jensen sometimes is *more* into wanting that old Sam & Dean back again. (Boy that was an uber-run-on sentence!) Not sure I'm doing a good job saying what I'm trying to say. But in past interviews I've heard Jensen say things that were along the lines of wanting the brother relationship back on more solid footing. Part of me wonders if that translated into a bit of S2 gloss over the few Sam & Dean segments in this episode.
I think I'm just going to give up posting reactions on my own LJ and just point over here. I seem to have more to say about my reactions by commenting on your reactions! :)

Date: 2010-10-16 04:24 pm (UTC)I think for me it was just the fact that every sequence of event - from the action sequences with the monsters, to Bobby driving along in the car, to Bobby just doing what Bobby does (ahaha, the moment with the FBI phone and the hunter? One of my favourite scenes) - just seemed to fit neatly into place in the episode. It didn't slow down too much, or speed up too much, even the segues were done skillfully. With a normal episode I'll come away happy but thinking 'oh, that was finished in a rush', or 'well, they didn't really take the time to set that scene properly'... but this time they did. And I was amazed.
So yes, I have much love for this episode. Much, much love. (And, OMG, I still can't believe Jensen directed it. Not really. How did I not know this?!)

Date: 2010-10-16 04:51 pm (UTC)I didn't find out until after I watched the episode (when reading this post, actually) that Jensen had directed the episode - how did I not know this?! - but I was definitely struck by the awesome amount of old school Sam'n'Dean. Having discovered it was Jensen who did the directing, I think it's entirely possible Jensen's directing played a large part in the way the episode, and especially the Sam'n'Dean interaction, played out. I loved the return of the more S2 dynamic and hope some of it sticks throughout the rest of the series *fingers crossed*.
Plus I also loved Rufus and Bobby and Crowley. And the sheriff and Bobby's neighbor. The wood chipper scene was priceless.
So true. :D

Date: 2010-10-16 04:51 pm (UTC)I hope it's not sacrilege to say that I didn't even miss the boys, I was enjoying it all so much. And to think I wasn't sure about watching this episode because it didn't have much Sam'n'Dean in it...
I'm loving this season so far :)

Date: 2010-10-16 05:40 pm (UTC)Yes all of this yes. Dean with Sam still at the center and I was worried they wouldn't reference Dean's fear of flying but no, we got details about that plane ride (where's the fic?) and a truckload of Bobby pov and the way they fleshed out his character. Day in the life episode, Ash! They did a day in the life episode! It's what I have always wanted!!! <3<3<3 Also Rufus! Sheriff Mills! Crowley!
I also loved the script, the snark and the surprises. Honestly, I kept forgetting to look at the direction while watching, because I got so pulled into the episode. \o/ Maybe the 3rd...or 4th viewing...I'll start noticing things like tracking shots and setups and things.

Date: 2010-10-16 06:30 pm (UTC)I think Jensen's directing gave the episode a significantly different look and feel I agree that the performances were a large part of the difference, as you say (everything was snappier, tighter, more "sprightly," if I can use that word about this show), but there were some choices of shots, camera movements, even editing--which I think the director gets to weigh in on--that made big differences.
The one shot that jumped out at me on first viewing was at the end, when Crowley refers to Sam as "Moose" (hah!) and the camera pans from Crowley up, up, up to Sam. That's something Show never does--it works so hard to minimize the difference between Jared's size and everyone else's that this really stood out for me. It was a good, funny line, made funnier by the director.
I actually woke up this morning thinking happily about Jensen's brilliant future as a director.

Date: 2010-10-17 12:44 am (UTC)I KNOW!! I can't believe I forgot to mention that line. It's my favourite one EVER! I just love that we still have a Dean who still cares deeply for Sam and is concerned about this change in him. Even though so much has happened over the many years ..... some things never change. \0/
And yay for happiness over your morning coffee! *HUGS*

Date: 2010-10-17 01:00 am (UTC)it was like concentrated Sam & Dean goodness!
It so totally was! We just had these tiny morsels of them, but they were tasty little treats. So... "them"... well, past "them" (when they're not at each others' throats). I also love that we got Bobby's POV of them. He loves them like sons, but like sons they are a pain in his ass sometimes. I even felt like hitting them over the back of the head. :D
but it also felt different somehow
Yeah - it's hard to pin point that difference. To me it had a warmth and understanding of character that we don't always get in episodes. That could be attributed to Jensen because he would know pretty much everything about the SPN world and how it all "works". It felt like putting of a comfy pair of slippers. :)
might have something to do with the fact that I think Jensen sometimes is *more* into wanting that old Sam & Dean back again
That could well have influenced the way those scenes for shot - though the writing backed it up by having those moments in there... like that AWESOME line "what's more important than Sam". Again, I think it comes down to the warmth he put (and obviously transferred to the cast & crew) into that episode. It had a joy that we haven't seen in show since probably S1&2.
Hee! And I'm happy with the .."what she said".. glad we're on the same page hun. :D

I would hope there is a slew of fic about this trip. Because, really, who would have ever expected it?
15. "Weekend at Bobby's" is a play on the movie "Weekend at Bernies" yeah? Hee! I chuckled when Rufus turned up with a dead body. Oh show...
So much better than the last movie-reference-Bobby-episode.

Date: 2010-10-17 01:13 am (UTC)I think you are absolutely right. The pacing was spot on. I'm really not into demon torture scenes so I worried that would go on for too long, but it didn't. And what I loved more than anything is that the end of the ep tied in perfectly to the beginning of the ep with the burning of the bones. So it meant more than just torturing the demon to get a name - it because the reveal at the end. (love that kinda stuff).
Hee! And you didn't know it was Jensen at the helm? That's probably good. You could be more objective when watching it (I went in with my fingers crossed that it was going to be good for Jensen's sake *g*). I mentioned in a comment above that I think he gave the episode warmth that might have been lacking if someone else had directed it (a new director not too familiar with the show for example). It was such a "comfortable" episode and I think that's down to him.
And yes to "that wasn't finished in a rush"... etc. I watched the behind the scenes vid of him directing (if you have seen it you must - there's a link on my previous post to it) and Jensen said he really did his homework. So I reckon he REALLY knew exactly what he wanted so he took and used the time he had properly.
Yay for great episodes!! And double yay for one of our boys directing it!!

Date: 2010-10-17 01:18 am (UTC)Hee! I wondered the same thing. It was quiet a relief not to have to angst over them. Though I think because what we got of them was so wonderful ("What's more important than Sam?" line being one of them), it was ok. But more so everything else was so GOOD!! The pace kept up so there were no moments of "I want to see the boys now..".
Oh and I'm loving the season so far too. It's been a lovely mixed bag. Each episode offering something different - and something wonderful. <333

Date: 2010-10-17 01:21 am (UTC)I reckon they've made a great start to the season. It's been so darn entertaining and if a TV show can't be entertaining then something's not right.

Date: 2010-10-17 01:31 am (UTC)Damnit! And I KNEW it would be a song like that. :)
And YES YES to everything you said here honey! It was such a great "day in the life" ep, because it wasn't flippant or cursory. It felt like we had a really good look at Bobby's life and were even given some extra wonderful nuggets of info. Hearts Bobby.
I kept forgetting to look at the direction while watching
Exactly... I had all intentions to really look at that but I just got swept away. Which in itself means great directing because it really shouldn't be "noticeable". I think what he did the best, in terms of directing, is add a level of warmth and comfort to the episode. I mentioned above that it felt like putting on a comfy pair of slippers. I think that was definitely Jensen's touch.
And YES!! Plane fic! And Scotland fic! And squashed in a small car fic! <33

Date: 2010-10-17 01:50 am (UTC)Yeah, I've been thinking more about his directing today (and having read some other comments here) and there was definitely a different feel to this episode that can be attributed to Jensen's directing. The "snappier and tighter" description is spot on. I think this comes down to the "homework" he said he did before going into the job. It felt like he had a thorough handle on it all - he knew exactly what he wanted. He probably didn't waste time, so never had to rush scenes. Even thing just fit together so well.
Good call on the "Moose" shot! And that's such a Jensen thing to do. Ha!
It's funny, one thing I did notice in that scene (and I'd have to go back and check this to be sure) but there's a shot of the boys standing by the grave and they look like the same height. I had a moment of thinking... I wonder if they've put Jared in a little ditch or something. It wouldn't surprise me if Jensen set that up also... *g*
Oh yes... Jensen does indeed have a bright future as a director. I reckon they'll get him to do another one. I would say the success of this one will have them asking him for more. Here's hoping!

Date: 2010-10-17 02:00 am (UTC)Bobby had other things on his mind (and even made the comment that the world doesn't revolve around the boys) and I think Dean really just didn't want to bring it up in front of Sam at the end. Or... the boys may have been jet lagged and just weren't thinking straight. Though the boys now have his remains, so there's no reason why they couldn't use them in the future. (I think the boys kept them??? Ooooh, I'd have to go and check that).
Cheers. Glad my enthusiasm could rub off a bit. :D
moment. And I don't think Dean is either. Also... the boys were probably jet lagged and weren't thinking straight. *G*

Date: 2010-10-17 02:05 am (UTC)YES TO FIC! And I know. Who would have EVER thought they'd have the boys flying to Scotland. Outrageous! I think I did a double take when that (rather fake) shot came up. I keep thinking it was some sort of trick. I'm thrilled it wasn't. Love the way all that played out.
So much better than the last movie-reference-Bobby-episode.
Yes. Yes. Oh yes. /o\

Date: 2010-10-17 02:18 am (UTC)I just had another look at the graveyard scene where they do look like they're nearly the same height.
The camera pans down their bodies to this clever shot, which disguises the fact that Dean is standing slightly forward of Sam, and on a little mound of dirt. Clever Jensen. :D
