I know what I am about to do is bad form but damnit, I need to growl and grumble and just... arghhh...
So, I decided to do some "research" for my next vid (part 2 for my winning bidder). I needed to remind myself where I might find some good old fashioned Dean hitting on girls scenes (remember when he used to do that?) and basically Dean being damn sexy, so I thought I do some YT Supernatural vid surfing.
I figured vids using Brittany's "Womanizer" might be good. Lends itself to what I might be looking for. But MY GOD! The crap I came across. (yes, yes, I know it's not good form to diss other people works.... but arghhhh). I just don't get it. Clips that have NOTHING to do with the song or relate to any "theme" of the vid (yes, Dean might look sexy when he's looking at his dead father...but... arghhh, not appropriate!!) gazzillion talking head, long, loooong scenes, credits and just...just... /o\. But here's the thing... one had about 84,000 views. What the...?!??!?
I suppose it's because I usually only watch vids posted here or YT recs. Which means I am totally spoiled by amazing and wonderfully constructed works. And have been for a long time. I just didn't realise it could be so baaaad.
Ok. End rant. I don't mean to be mean. I just had to get that off my chest. *phew*
That said. Can anyone rec me a good Dean and his "moves" vids. I reckon there must be one out there. Or even a montage of sexy Dean scenes...(I know they'd be some of those!!)... but...only ones I can actually sit through. ;) It's totally for research purposes you understand....:D
Better now...
ETA: For what it's worth I don't believe Dean is a womanizer at all. I think he's a healthy male who appreciates the female form and enjoys sex, but I also think he has a respect for women that is quite deep and not often realised on the show. There's meta here that will have already been written somewhere no doubt, much better than I could write it. But yeah... just thought I'd mention that. :)

Date: 2010-10-21 04:34 pm (UTC)Eesh, how long had it been up? I suppose a lot just has to do with where links have been posted. Plus how recognizable the song is, a lot of people seem to think that song + show clips (any) = vid. Hmm, maybe I could be a vidder after all ...
There were a few decent vids at the Creation Con, but all I kept thinking was that these people winning prizes weren't generally anywhere as good as the vids I come across here. In fact the best vid I saw (and I'll confess, I didn't stick around to watch the vid shows because they just weren't that engaging) was one I'd already seen:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dc1dWYqC4k
I noticed however that every so often I'd hear screams coming from the ballroom, which made me think at first that one of the guests had appeared (a con is one of the few places you might reasonably expect someone was looking at the actual Jared) and it was just for a given clip from the show. So I think that a large part of the audience doesn't really think about anything besides "Oh, there's a shot of Jensen shirtless!" Depressing, but there you go. Short PWP fic often gets a lot more comments than an excellent gen fic too.
I'm glad you brought this issue up though because until you had I'd kind of forgotten about it when discussing the last con. Normally, being able to watch fan vids in a room full of fellow fans would be a great thing but (aside from the painfully uncomfortable seating) I couldn't be bothered to do it because I didn't feel like we were really sharing anything.

Date: 2010-10-21 07:09 pm (UTC)I was lucky enough that the first fanvid I seen for SPN was by an established vidder. Then I found her lj and tracked her recs and then found SVS and I think I've only seen like 3 bad videos from this fandom
not including my own.So they don't have vids from the truly talented people in this fandom at the con?

Date: 2010-10-21 08:22 pm (UTC)From being in the fandom I know that there are much, much better examples of vids that could have gotten that audience especially since in every group attending there are some people for whom the vids would be brand new so they wouldn't have to be specially made vids. I think, though, that a lot of the better vidders prefer to have their vids shown at fan cons rather than actor cons. Obviously I can only guess at the reasons, but I would assume that among them are the fact that Creation is a for-profit con, the vidders aren't attending the cons anyway, or they don't want the actors to see them. Also a possibility is that these vids are likely chosen less for skill and more for content, so for example the many slash vids that are made in fandoms either would never be submitted or wouldn't be chosen if they were.
But I agree that it is rather sad. I went to a fan con last year and one of the presentations showed a few vids (it wasn't actually about vidding, but it used them as examples of a point). It was a small crowd, maybe 50 people compared to the 2000 or so that saw the video Misha commented on at Chicago. But I think the small group appreciated the vids much more even though they came from different fandoms. I think there's a real difference between fans that are more fan-oriented and those that are more star-oriented in terms of what appeals to them.

Date: 2010-10-22 07:40 am (UTC)Yeah - that can certainly be a factor in how many hits a vid might get. I think it had been up for a little while. But still...
The Not Dead Yet vid is heaps of fun. I'd seen that before I think.
It's a real shame to hear that the fanvids they chose at the con weren't very engaging. Considering how many there are around that are engaging.
It was very interesting to me that at the con I went to in Sydney this year, they used a fanvid to introduce each guest. Some were pretty good, but there was one that was poorly made (in my opinion) and it really annoyed me. But then it made me realise that to the average viewer the way a vid is put together might not be that important.
I won't rant about this now as in about a month I will be hosting a similar discussion at spnroundtable. I'm really hoping to get some interesting opinion on what makes a fanvid watchable. Hee! No doubt I'll do some ranting then.
:)

Date: 2010-10-22 07:20 pm (UTC)And also considering that these are the ones that people connected to the show actually see.

They did the same at this con, which was why I saw as many as I did.
it made me realise that to the average viewer the way a vid is put together might not be that important.
I was thinking of your post yesterday night when I was reading the following paragraph in this metafadom'ed post:
"Funny, how one tends not to question whether other people are reading things and enjoying them for the same reason you do yourself. I once wrote a story based on somebody's crack/kink prompt for a Supernatural story based on the movie Secretary; the prompt caught my attention because I could see ways of using the idea of punishment and penitence and control to illuminate characters at this particular point in canon, and because the candy coloured fantasy of corporate drone-dom in the episode 'It's A Terrible Life' had enough resonance with the setting of the movie for it to be workable. It functioned on a number of levels, building on Dean's buried past as a victim and torturer in hell, building on Castiel's sense of guilt towards Dean for his experiences at Heaven's hands, and for his current situation, building on Castiel's own lack of freedom...it's a bit of a lowering realisation when you twig that actually, they just showed up for the hot guys bumping uglies...felt almost physically ill at the realisation that she saw no difference between the story I'd written and her proposal for a story based on 'Goldilocks and The Three Bears', in which Castiel was Goldilocks & fucked John, Sam and Dean, before concluding that Dean was "just right""
I'm really hoping to get some interesting opinion on what makes a fanvid watchable.
I'll be interested in reading that too.
