Oh dear...:(

We just got the call to say my daughter didn't make the final cut for the WA Nationals Team. :( She is devastated of course. A difficult thing for a 12 year old to understand. Even when we tell her she did well to get where she did. She was the best shot put thrower in the squad, but she needed another event and unfortunately she just wasn't able to demonstrate her potential during the trails.

Oh well. It's all part of life. Learning to deal with disappointment is all part of growing up I suppose. Sucks though.

I'm so sorry to hear it didn't work out for her and it is a shame growing can suck so much - you're so right that in life the disappointment has to take turns with the delights, taking away all competition wouldn't solve anything, but to see your own child have to struggle with it must be so hard for you. *hugs for both of you*

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that - but as you say, it's all part of growing up. I am always amazed by how my own children face the possibility of these sort of disappointments, far better than I ever managed.

At the end of the day, the good things about taking part in these sports almost certainly outweigh the disadvantages.

Give your daughter my love, and tell her that I think she's amazing.

Oh, damn! Hugs to your daughter. That is a tough rite of passage. And there's no way she can have the perspective to be in awe of the fact that she was allowed to compete, could compete, and had events to compete in that until way, way too recently were closed to girls. She's a winner no matter what.

Thank you so much. Watching her heartbreak is particularly awful I have to say, but you gotta take the ups with the downs, especially in a competitive field. This is only the beginning as she starts to grow up I suspect.

Yeah, it is a shame. The experience of being part of that team would have been fabulous for her. Oh well. :(

Yes we do. And I suppose she has to start dealing with the up and downs of that. Which she has during the course of all her competitions, but nothing quite like this one...

Yeah. If she wins a medal at States next year she gets to go to Singapore. Of course at the moment she thinks she'll never win anything again....

Oh man that does suck. Commiserations to her - and I know it doesn't feel like it for her right now but it's awesome that she got this far at such a young age. Not even technically a teenager yet - still so much opportunty. Hopefully this will fuel her determination to go even further next time.

It's been a tough day, that's for sure. Never knew a person could shed so many tears. But she is already trying to think ahead to next year ... hopefully she'll stay strong.

Harder now that all those that did get in are celebrating on Facebook... *encourages her to not look*.

I'm a mom who has had to console kids through some recent defeats and set-backs. It's so hard to watch but I've come to decide it's practice living in the world.

I knew a nurse who worked in the psychiatric ward who talked about all the "teacup" young adults they would see, who looked polished and perfect on the outside but had had so few disappointments or difficulties that when the inevitable trouble came, often in their early twenties, they just "broke." Couldn't handle it because things had come so easily as kids.

I've told myself this many times over the past several years, and it's helped. It still hurts and is hard to watch, but it's helped me when life is less than perfect for my kids.

All that to say, so sorry! It's amazing she did so well and hopefully, that will matter a lot more in the future. :)

Thank you so much. Knowing that has really helped. Nothing has been harder than to see her despair. But I truly believe it will help make her stronger in the future. She's already talking about what steps she can take to improve her chances next year. So she's starting to climb out....
