So, I've been blathering about this bromance vid my muse seems determined to kill me with. I'm still not sure this will actually happen, but I am pursuing it to see how far I can go before it all becomes too hard.

Step one is confirming the bromance pairings I have.

To qualify as "bromance" I am looking for pairings where 2 males care deeply for each other. Mateship, male bonding, BBF's, platonic love (I'd sell my soul for you Sammy) kind of friendship.

These are the pairings I have so far. Thank you to everyone who have contributed to this list.

Sam and Dean (Supernatural)
Dean and Castiel (Supernatural)
Peter and Neal (White Collar)
Sherlock and John (Sherlock)
Starsky and Hutch (S&H)
Simon and Simon (S&S)
Frank and Jo Hardy (The Hardy Boys)
Bodie and Doyle (The Professionals)
Solo and Kuryakin (The Man from UNCLE)
Apollo and Starbuck (Original Battlestar Galatica)
Merlin and Arthur (Merlin)
Kirk and Spock (Star Trek)
Turk and JD (Scrubs)
Alan Shore and Denny Crane (Boston Legal)
Shawn and Gus (Psych),
House and Wilson (House),
Barney and Marshall (How I Met Your Mother),
Leonard and Sheldon (Big Bang Theory),
Jack and Tony Almeda (24),
Joey and Chandler (Friends),
Frank Pembleton and Tim Baylis (Homicide: Life on the streets),
Blacke and Avon (Blakes 7),
Hannibal Heyes and Kid Curry (Alias Smith and Jones)
Chuck and Morgan (Chuck),
Vince and E (Entourage)
Charlie & Don Eppes (Numb3rs)
Fraser and Ray - Due South,
O'neill and Jackson (sg1),
Clark and Lex (Smallville S1 & 2)
Dexter and his brother (Dexter s1),
Bernard and Manny (Black Books)
Jim and Blair (The Sentinel)
Little Joe and Hoss (Bonanza)
Sam and Josh (West Wing)
Landry and Matt (Friday Night Lights)
Riggins and Jason (Friday Night Lights)
Flynn and Provenza (The Closer)
Jason and Andy (True Blood)
Don and Roger (Mad Men)
Jemaine and Bret (Flight of the Conchords)
Troy and Abed (Community)
Angel and Spike (Angel or Buffy - um, not sure which one)
Seth and Ryan (The OC)
Dan and Casey (Sports Night)
Cory and Shawn (Boy Meets World)
Hercules and Iolas, (Hercules).
Sam and Michael (Burn Notice).
BJ and Hawkeye (MASH)
Felix and Oscar (The Odd Couple)

I'm interested to know if anyone thinks that either a) there are pairings I am missing and b) if some of these don't really qualify (as in friends, but not "I'd be a lesser person without you" type of friend). I am hoping to shrink the list, so if you think any of these don't belong I'd be really interested to know.

I am also looking for the perfect song. I can actually do that part myself but if you have any ideas you know I am all ears.

Also, because of this, I have discovered a new (well, quite old now) TV show and it has become my new addiction. It's The Sentinel and I am like... JIM AND BLAIR!! \o/ *smishes*[livejournal.com profile] ancastar for the incredibly detailed info on this series. At the moment I just can't get enough.

Interesting list! And interesting to think what defines a bromance.

For me a bromance at its core is a positive relationship - even if its not always functional! So I wouldn't include relationships that are very antagonistic - for example while I think Spike and Angel have some sort of fucked up bond, I don't see it as a bromance. I def wouldn't include Dexter and his brother. Or Jason and Andy from True Blood, who are sort of just mates bound together by a shared lie.

Also in MASH? Trapper and Hawkeye trumps BJ and Hawkeye ;D

From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
Thank you. This is exactly the feedback I need. Not knowing some of the pairings I have no idea whether they qualify or not.

I gave my own definition of bromance so I have no idea if there's a "true" definition. For me it's more than just a good working relationship (like say the NCIS guys). It definitely has to be positive. The gal who suggested Spike and Angel did mention their antagonism but I'm not familiar with them so I didn't know how it worked.

And yes... Trapper and Hawkeye would trump BJ and Hawkeye. But I wonder if that was more to do with the actors? The latter certainly didn't have the chemistry of Trapper and Hawkeye. Though I believe they were the original pairing from the film.

Thanks so much honey.<33

I've always thought the song Sting wrote for Lethal Weapon 3 (with Eric Clapton) would make an excellent bromance vid song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUYI7kIR0S4 It's a slow one though so I don't know if you wanted an action packed vid or slow emotional one. I'll be musing on the song for an action packed vid.

Date: 2010-09-05 01:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com
Oh that is indeed a lovely song.

I'm probably thinking something a little more celebratory. The one I have in mind at the moment is the song from Monsters Inc - "If I didn't have you". Something up beat.

Though I'm not really sure yet. I don't think I'll go action packed as not all pairings are about action. Probably more feel good and positive. Though that still could be "emotional".

Thanks hun! :)

That's quite the list!! I hope this won't be the vid that breaks your brain! LOL -- This is tough, because Sam and Dean are so off the charts in this area that most other "bromances" simply pale by comparison.

Just some thinky thoughts:
-I love House and Wilson and dysfunctional waters run deep, there's no doubt about that, and they certainly behave like brothers who are not really brothers, but I'm not certain they really belong in the "I would die for him" category.

-Ditto Dexter and his brother
-Ditto Jason and Andy

-Don and Roger from Mad Men: as a fan of the show my thoughts are that both these men are a little too arrogant and ego-driven to share the selfless kind of love and intense male bonding that you seek

-I *love* Friday Night Lights, and Riggins and Jason are definitely BFF material, but Season 4 really develops Riggins' relationship with his actual brother Billy (and in my heart that relationship trumps all). It's complicated, dysfunctional, deep, and wonderful. And the best part - *self-sacrificing* - sound familiar? :D

I've rambled enough so I'll stop now! Can't wait to see what music you finally choose - if I happen to think of something awesomely apropos I will let you know :D

Okay, I thought about it some more ... I take it back, House and Wilson definitely belong here. What was I thinking? :D

Hee! This may indeed break my vidding brain (though I do have a plan so I'm not having to source all the footage myself *g*)

And Sam and Dean are indeed off the chart! There's been no stronger bond (though Starsky and Hutch come pretty damn close for me).

From earlier comments I'd say Dexter and bro are definitely off the list as are Jason and Andy.

I'll take your word for the others because I don't know them. I am looking for readily identifiable strong male bonds.

Thank you!

And, as with all vids, the song will be the thing. If I can end up getting the footage getting the right song will be the next challenge.

Van/Deaq from Fastlane. The show has a strong OT3 vibe but the bromance is pretty epic too. Not to mention the show's made for vidding, absolute eye-candy.

Brad/Nate from Generation Kill. Understated but undeniable.

Also for your consideration: Boyd/Rayland from Justified.

Here I am again saying Sheppard and McKay because they are one of favorite bromance couples but I'm seriously not trying to force them on you :) So if you left them off on purpose, never mind this...

...as for the antagonists thing, maybe it's possible to include those as well, like, grouped together in one part of the vid, where there is a music change or something :)

Hope this helps!

As for Spike and Angel, you get some pretty good bromancey moments in season 5 of Angel. Most the scenes that they're together in on season 2 of Buffy, Spike's in a wheelchair, and the dynamic is off. Mainly because Angel is Angelus and the snark between them is different.

Well, you wouldn't know it from the fandom, but Crockett and Tubbs on Miami Vice are exactly like that (the show, not so much the movie from what I hear). They're the most stereotypical buddy cops I've ever seen, and they get those ridiculous "I LOVE YOU MAN" scenes all the time whenever someone gets shot or it's a season finale or whatever.

Pretty much all buddy cops would work though.

I agree that Angel and Spike don't really qualify. They both show up on both shows. I think most of the stuff you'd want would be from Angel and not Buffy if you did choose to include them.

House and Wilson have an Odd Couple sort of thing going on when the show bothers to use Wilson for anything. Personally, I think their relationship is boring and I have no idea what fandom is on about, but people do constantly mention their bromance (including in official publicity stuff).

I second the NCIS:LA thing. The show is clearly going for the classic buddy cop bromance vibe.

If you want something historical, Master and Commander (Aubrey & Maturin), Horatio Hornblower (Horatio & Archie), and Sharpe (Sharpe & Harper) are all long on the epic bromance. Though I should probably warn you up front that the quality on the official Sharpe DVDs is absolute crap.
